Good price - might be tempted to spend the extra 45 quid for a five year warranty with Richer Sounds.

But good price none-the less!

will this play movies through USB

Thanks Guv

It does? how does that work then?

I have one of these TVs and am very pleased with it. It's a no frills model ie. 50hz, no fancy upscaling etc, but does a fantastic job on both 720P and 1080P material via my PS3.

It's not quite as good at 1080P from my HTPC with some mild character ghosting/edging.
I don't like the built in SD Freeview tuner as the TV gives a poor picture here. I get a much better image sending freeview upscaled from the HTPC via HDMI.

That reinforces to me that the TV basically upconverts to 1080P rather than upscaling via a clever system such as Faroudja etc.

I have this TV and cannot use the USB port for media?

£5 cheaper than Richer Sounds, good find!

Great price, Hot. Selling my 50 inch samsung to cex tommorrow, poor sound and now too big for my new living room. No idea if sound quality is improved in this model, ideally i want a 37 inch model but they tend to be more expensive than 40 and 42 inch models

sound is always rubbish on samsung lcds, need a good sammy surround sound for it too.

usb is for software updates only - not for playing avi files etc.

you can download the instruction manual from richer sounds website

Hi All!!

Few points....

The sound on this TV is pretty good, but yes i have a surround sound to.

The USB port is for firmware updates, i just updated it this morning via USB and it was easy as pie.

The TV has a wonderful finish, a nice shiny black surround and a sort of red strip of glass at the bottom.

I use it with my Xbox 360 Slim and Sky+ HD and it has fantastic picture quality.

Another amazing thing is the TV has optical connection so easy connecting to your surround sound

The sound is awful imho.
Though saying that, using a 40" flatscreen, I would hope that people would pair with an AV amp or at least a basic surround system.

I have the 32" version of this and have watched a few movies (.avi and divx files i think) using USB. Didnt need to do anything to update / convert files. The media player should let you browse photos / files and play movies without much hassle.

It seems to be a luck of the draw, some will, some wont.

I had this TV at Christmas. The picture wasn't that great to be honest, I replaced it with a Sony, way better.

the confusion with this set over the USB is this:

the 530, USB is for updates only.
the 550, USB can play AVI etc.

Thanks for making it clear!!

Good price, but personally I wouldn't buy a Samsung again
Mine developed a horrible line down the screen after about 15months use, apparently it is a common fault with Samsung Screens

Actually neither plays avi's.
Unlike Samsung's B650 LCD series and LED models, the 40B550 doesn't have an Ethernet port for accessing either Samsung's Media 2.0 ‘Internet' service, or content stored on a DLNA PC. Nor does the USB handle video files, like the USB jacks of the higher spec models.

The things i hear about "Samsung panel lottery" has put me off buying this model, i'm edging towards the sony equivalent, even if it is £100 more

I have a Samsung 40B550 and i can confirm that is does play AVI files via USB. You just need to enable the setting.

Would Richer Sounds not be better, as you can get a warranty for 5 years for 10% of the cost. Only £5 more?

BUY IT NOW AS I UNLEASH THE FURY OF CAPS LOCK, I dont think you'll make a decent sales man OP

I heard that the viewing angles on this are poor, if you move a left or right by just a margin, the colours begin to wash so it would be a bad idea to have it as a family TV.

Whats the difference between the Samsung 40B550 and this one?

Is it true that you get a free Chelsea player with every Samsung TV? I heard that Ancelotti was clearing out after yesterday's match.

Looks a good TV and price but would prefer one with DVI input

thats pretty rare, i dont know any large tvs with DVI input

Dont forget you can get DVI-HDMI adapters

I'm very tempted to buy this. Was looking for a decent tv under £400 as I'm currently using a tiny 22 inch one for my PS3 and Xbox gaming

I have this TV and thats not true, i can be sitting at my pc desk and watching near parallel and its still very good.

Anyone know if you can get this set from John Lewis? Would prefer to pick one up from in store and get the 5 year warranty. Happily pay a bit more.

I've just bagged one, thanks for the deal - voted hot from me

Im never buying Samsung again.....2 faulty monitors later, tho both within waranty. Both with the random samsung line

This is one of the lower end Samsung tv's, I was not impressed with the picture or motion rendering.

Brilliant spot, OP! Very tempted. I have a tiny 24" (or thereabouts) Samsung from about five years ago which is still going strong, but am looking for a big set for my new flat. Was all set to pick up an LG 42LH2000 from Richer Sounds (in-store) for £369.95 but quite tempted by the Samsung.

Any major differences between the two? I'm not a great fan of LG - I've had a 32" of theirs in my current flat whose SD picture has never really impressed.

Anyway - great spot to the OP.

Do i Dont i

just a note about optical connection on tv. it only outputs 2.1 and not surround sound.

Wondering why i only got 2.1 then through it. prob wrong source material. I use my amp anyway but would free up some optical connections.

Anyone who relies on their tv speakers for sound is a fool.
