good price but id advise people to go for a 7200 drive

Ive just bought a new laptop how do i go about getting the operating system on the laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64bit) onto a new harddrive like this one, as it didn't come with any discs?

Pretty easy, actually - buy a USB-SATA adaptor, download Hiren's Boot CD, use the Ghost4Linux app to image your existing drive to this new one, swap the drives over, boot into Windows, load up Disk Management, and use that to expand the size of your partition to the limits of the new drive.

Thanks for disk copy tip

Not a good idea in a PS3 and even some laptops, the extra heat from these can cause problems. Not to mention the battery drain in a latop...

This is a very fast drive, fastest 2.5" drive I've ever used and silent as well!

I wouldn't for a laptop. Lower battery life, more heat, noisier, more fragile, not much faster for most people, especially with modern OSs.

I bought 3 of these for that price from Amazon last week.

1 for my PS3
1 for my Macbook
1 for my Dad's PS3

I must say they seem great and the speed is pretty good, You get around 598gb free on the PS3 once you stick it in for some reason though

When carriage is added this comes to £50.71.
At Play.com its £50.59 including postage !
Save £0.12 !

Drives manufacturers state capacities where 1GB = 1000MB = 1,000,000KB = 1,000,000,000 bits. So this drive = 640,000,000,000 bits.

Technically OSes treat data as beaning stored in GiB where:
1GiB = 1024MiB
1MiB = 1024KiB
1KiB = 1024bytes

So to determine the drive capacity in windows/any other OS, divide 640,000,000,000 bytes (the capacity of this drive) by 1024 three times and you get:

640,000,000,000/1024 = 625000000
625,000,000/1024 = 610351.5625
610351.5625/1024 =596.04644775390625

Which is the capacity of the drive!

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing, trying to write it down in a way that can be understood is tricky lol!

Phil,

Cheers.. i knew there was a reason for it but couldnt work it out!!

Lets be honest 598gb drive on a PS3 is more than enough.. I have filled out 100gb with video files already which is pretty much my whole DVD collection..

Blu-Ray drive and a selection of 110 other films means the PS3 is great now as my front room media hub.

I have about 440gb left total and dont really know what I am going to use it for.. lol

So use the free delivery option that the OP posted..

Also if you get it from play, its from a playtrade seller with only 75% positive feedback.. i'd rather use Scan to be honest.

Good price. I bought one of these for my laptop from buyer.

On the front of pc pro this month is a free copy of paragon. Thats a good bit of software for swapping hard drives.

It's much cheaper to just buy a 2.5" USB Hard Drive enclosure/caddy, can be had for a few pounds on the bay. And as a bonus when your done, you can use your old hard drive in the caddy as portable storage

Can this drive be used on the XBox, I heard only WD drives are compatible..

Better to get a 7200 vs 5400

Install of:

Tony Hawk demo
5400rpm - 4:11.184
7200rpm - 3:32.045
Almost 40 seconds off it's install time. Coming in at a nice 16% increase in speed.

Oblivion
Initial load
5400rpm - 21.355
7200rpm - 19.253
Just over 2 seconds off loading time. Close to 10% increase.

Honestly, from my findings, a 7200rpm does show an increase in performance. Some only a little, some a lot. But every single test the 7200rpm drive beat out the 5400rpm in speed.

5400rpm - 129 degrees or 53.9c
7200rpm - 131 degrees or 55.0c

Any good 7200rpm 2.5" drives anyone could recommend?

I'm going to do a clean install I think - mine is starting to run a little slow after 3 or 4 OS upgrades!

Running out of Space on my PS3 since started backing up games on HDD.

only have 9GB left from 120GB

heat from me

Thanks

Does anyone know if i upgrade to this drive on a laptop ive bought recently will this affect the warranty?

I can't say it why it would. RAM and hard disc upgrades shouldn't affect a laptop warranty. In any case, if the laptop was to go wrong you could just take out the new hard disc and put the old one back before calling it in for repair.

Ordered Sat lunchtime, arrived first thing Monday morning - good work Scan!
