More than capable, long battery life, runs XP, large 10.2" screen, 160GB Hard Drive and very portable.

Just google Samsung NC10 and see all the positive comments it seems to be getting.

I really want one of these!

But still tempted to hold off for one with built in HSDPA 3G. And is it right a Dual Core Atom chip is on the way?

thanks, I had looked at the acer aspire one but this is much better

Yes - but it uses too much power for netbooks. It'll go in the small home PCs that are coming out

The NC 10 has a sim & a PCI\slot so it's a bit more mobile than others

Pity there isn't an SSD option especially as Samsung make SSDs. Can't see the point of such a large drive in a small computer

Looks like the cats out of the bag  Oh well hope they honour mine.

Really...? It says on Quidco that computers and electronics are only 0.5%, but hey i'm not complaining.

Bear in mind that John Lewis will probably offer an extra 1 year of guarantee as standard, making it two years - but their price will be 299. I called them yesterday and they told me stock is due in this week.

£12 was tracked by quidco. It is 4% but not 0.5%.

I pre-ordered it a few days before.

great laptop, brilliant price

Hi

I don't want to hijack this thread, and forgive me for asking silly questions but I need a laptop that is cheap (was looking sub £250-£200 mark so this is a little more expensive). It may be easier to say what I need it for:

Basic word/processing letter writing (need to connect to my Epson printer)
Wi-fi Internet
Watching the Hollyoaks catch up online
Dowloading the occasional tune
Emailing/Surfing
Playing CD's DVD's - only when I'm stuck in a hotel on training with nothing to do (not often)

Please help me, I'm completely baffled and no idea what is suitable. Do the netbooks(?) come with CD drives??? I can't beleive I'm asking this, it souds silly!!!!

Thank you

rachelandgromit: any netbook with a hard drive will suffice if you rip your DVDs and CDs on your main computer and copy them across (netbooks don't have optical drives in general, but you can copy the files using SD card, USB card).

This can do everything you want, but like most netbooks it has no CD / DVD drive.

:? But this is going to be my only computer, I won't have a main one!

I am moving out of my parents so I am looking for something that will just suit my light use now my uni course is done.

Aw, no cd/dvd drive then on netbooks! Right, so I need to look at laptops then! Right, any good deals on laptops sub £200!!!!!

You can always buy an external DVD writer.

E.g., for £33: ebuyer.com/pro…345 (I haven't checked for a best deal)

If you're not going to want to use your CD/DVD drive all the time then you could always buy an external drive which connects by USB2 and use it when at home and still have the netbook on the move. However if you need the drive always with you then you will need a full laptop.

i don't know of any good deals for laptops but for your needs i would def say stick with a laptop rather than a notebook/netbook.

you could add an external dvd drive, will cost around £35 to £50.
]Play.com have a LG slim drive I'm thinking about buying to go with the NC10, its £60, so a bit more but it is also a lightscribe drive as well.
If thats too much money, how about a HP from ]SVP. £36 + p&p
The advantage of this is that you can rip a dvd or audio to the hard drive, then you can leave the drive at home, saving of weight when out & about.
I want to buy the blue NC10, but am holding off ordering till i can see the white, blue & black side by side in a shop.

EDIT
Sorry, two others posted the same thing about using an external drive while I was writing this out

I think this is the one i'm going to go for?

H&R added

cheers mate

Wish laptop makers would hurry up and release more 1280*768 models. There's plenty space for that in a 10" chassis, and it makes a big difference to surfing compared to 1024*600.

Not really the TDP of the Diamondville N270 atom (this one) is 2.5W where the TDP of the Dual-Core Atom 330 is 4W. Not hugely power hungry.

I personally have settled for the Advent 4211 which has been converted the a perfect MacBook Mini. That should get me by until Dual Core atoms are found in Netbooks.

Nice, if my acer one packs in I shall get one of these.

It actually draws 8W AFAIK...
Earliest I would imagine is Q2 2009 release.

I personally don't see the need for dual cores in these netbooks, for what you would normally use it as such as browsing the net and word processing they are all single thread programs.

As sure as I can be. I saw it on their terminal in Wycombe when I asked about it a few weeks ago. I phoned up a couple of days ago and they told me they had stock due in this week.

They won't show it on their website until they have stock in their warehouse - they won't even take pre-orders in store. I'm happy to wait - even though it's not as cheap as Play, the extra year of guarantee is worth it to me.

What JL have in-store and what JL have on their web site are two completely different things!

I too think the extra years warranty is worth paying £299 for.

This Play.com offer is riddled with unknowns - dodgy RAC voucher and Quidco cashback - to get both you'll have to be extremely lucky tomorrow!

I am moving house soon and was going to get a new Desktop but this seems really good for the price and i love Samsung products. I was wondering how long it would last as i would use it ALOT (Would the battery wear out quickly and the fans etc?)

Yes, I should have mentioned that I spoke to somebody at JL online too and they were my source for saying that it wouldn't appear online until they had stock. Since they sell other Samsung laptops online I think it's likely they their customer service rep was correct as the NC10, because of the amazing battery life, is likely to be a big seller. We'll see.

FWIW I think that any JL store will accept a phone order for this kind of thing and send it free of charge - don't quote me though...

cold im afraid. the spec is really REALLY basic and will soon begin to struggle to run modern software especially with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The only thing you are getting for £300 is the size+weight. Good for some people but not everyone

1.33 kg is biggish for a netbook!

Is the Acer 701 the smallest weight?

What is the smallest with XP?

Voted hot:thumbsup:

I think you are missing the point, you buy this FOR the size and weight. It's a netbook not a laptop, it's not supposed to be used for running CPU hungry programs, its for surfing the web, the odd document and some music and video, it's not like this thing is ever not going to be capable of doing those thing! Oh and it's definitely not cold this is £15 cheaper than anywhere else and that's before quidco.
