Website shows battery life as 3 hours. Always amazes me how people can post a question on here when the answer is readily available on the deal website.

3 hours isn't very long is it?

Depends - for a laptop battery it's average, for some other things it's pretty good . . .

I bought one of these in the JB02 flavour instore last Friday from Purley Way. After visiting John Lewis, Curry's & PC World, the chap in Comet was the 1st person I spoke to who was helpful. He was happy to pricematch so got it for £469 after showing him the 6400 code. Seeing as I was getting £30 of an already good price I was happy to go for the bigger memory & hard drive. Also, the JB02 is meant to have 4 hrs battery life instead of 3hrs according to Comet's POS display, but I was sceptical (rightly so!).

About the laptop. It is pretty quick, not massively faster than my previous (very unreliable) Sony Vaio AR with C2D, but a lot faster to boot up. The build quality is good for a laptop that at the same time is trying to be lightweight. It's seems on a par with most of the run of the mill Acers, Dells, Toshibas, but not as sturdy as the HP G62. The red casing to the lid is not nearly as garish or bright as it appears in photos, it is one thing I thought I wouldn't like but in the flesh it has turned out to be one of the best things about it. Battery life is about 3 hrs for light browsing. Videos seem to play well.
Unfortunately though I'm pretty disappointed with the R530 overall for three reasons. Firstly the sound is abysmal, far too quiet. Secondly the touchpad is poor, surface feels cheap, and the scrolling is very hard to control. Most importantly for me though, the screen has a very small optimal viewing angle, if you don't look at the screen from just the right angle the display bleaches out and has little colour or contrast. I blamed the display instore on the harsh overhead lights, but unfortunately it's just as bad at home. I sort of regret buying it because the screen, sound and touchpad aren't as good as I'd expected.

I think that must be a typo by Comet; as the i3 comes with GMA (5700MHD) graphics that are significantly better than the x4500MHD.

Quick question... In practical terms, how much difference does it make that this has the 32bit version of the OS, rather than the 64 bit?

I know it affects how much memory can be addressed, but if this comes with 3GB and I don't intend to upgrade that, would there be much other difference?
  18. deleted37447's avatar
Well it's faster and better looking than my old laptop which is only 18months old...I'm really chuffed with it.
TO be honest I only use mine for internet, office now and then and music.
Don't need 64-bit machine....wouldn't make any difference to me.

None as 32bit Os can address upto around 4gb but you wont see all that but with 3gb its no issue as all of that will show up, why stupid comments about it being only 32bit are being posted is totally beyond me as the people making these posts wouldnt know the difference between 32 and 64bit OS's anyway if they had under 3gb of memory and it certainly wont affect performance in everyday home use on a normal laptop or desktop

A 32 bit processor is faster than a 64 bit processor, 64 bit processors are very commonly used that you can find it easily in any home pc but the main difference is the hardware you are having on your machine. For 32 bits there isn’t any need of any wide main bus to carry 32 bits at a time but for 64 bits its must that you should have a wider bus to carry 64bits.

The main difference between a 32 bit and 64 is that 32 bit system has 4gb(gigabytes) of space for addressing means that the 32 bit system has a limit of 4GB RAM to process data where as the 64 bit operating system has 2^64 bits of space to address and supports 16 hexabytes of RAM to process data. or 128gb for the people that made the posts about x64 OS's

Agreed, in most cases I actually use the x86 version of an OS anyway because x64 is only really meant for powerhouses and in the case of Windows the x64 version can sometimes be a real pain to deal with in terms of compatibility and non-system user acces rights.

Well said i use x86 on my laptop as there's no need for x64 as it doesn't have 4gb of memory even though the CPU is capable but on my i5 desktop i use x64 as it has 8gb of memory and the x86 couldn't address it.

What i cant understand is why comments like that are made in the first place, this is a decent spec machine and the fact it has x86 windows on it means nothing i think the OEM would know what OS to put on there machines and as there's no reason to use x64 that's why they haven't and there would of been no extra cost. When you buy a retail copy of windows it comes with all versions meaning x86 and x64 and all versions of windows so there's no reason that you cant load x64 on and use the product key to activate the x64 version as its alright by Microsoft if you own the discs, you can choose either x86 or x64.

Absolutely, as I said earlier I am after a new laptop at the moment and if wasn't for the integrated video, I would be all over this deal, although it's also somewhat annoying that Comet will not offer free delivery to my address before 11th October, especially considering that I live in Central Manchester.
