Hot if you are a Costco member otherwise add 5% to the price or pay £30 quid to join??

I'm guessing it's plus VAT too? For us commoners, at least.

for non members its 5% on top of £550 including vat and delivery. Which bring the non members grand total to £580, which is still a good deal.

The £549 includes VAT.

A 900p panel on a 17" might be a bit of a shocker for some, I know I wouldnt like that combo.

Why? I have this screen on my laptop and it's very legible and easy to read. I'd actually prefer a full 1080p screen for the extra resolution.

You misunderstood me, I meant I would want a higher resolution on a 17", personally I'd prefer 1080p on a 15".

You want 1080p on a 15" so you want higher than 1080p on a 17". Does any manufacturer makes such a laptop now?

No, I said I would want higher than 900p, esp. given this is a 17", and that my personal preference would actually be full hd on a 15", not sure what was confusing you?

Would rather spend bit more for a dell i7 with Hd screen to be honest, but still an ok deal for the price.

Worth checking instore for costco members as the instore prices (if stocked) are always cheaper than the online price

Whats Windows 8 like as I really like Windows 7??

This is a bargain. I paid £750 for this about 6 months ago

Whats Windows 8 like as I really like Windows 7??

I found Windows 8 horrendously difficult to use. Moving around from window to window is ridiculous (Alt+Tab fails completely) loading windows side by side is no longer a simple task, and GOD WHY DID THEY REMOVE THE TASKBAR!!

I returned my Windows 8 laptop on day 3 and spent money repairing my Windows 7 again.

But yeah, that's just ONE horrendous Windows 8 experience. Hopefully others love it.

for that price this pc is free,i paid for dell inspiron 17 se 1100 pounds ,but with 3d and 3d classes and gt 650 dd5 with 2gb,keyboard with backlit, usb 3.0 power share,2tb space,32 gb mssd,Screen Resolution: 1920, 2years hardwere and software warrty +2 years accident and damege.and dell use the same Processor and Speed,i think this samsung is just free and good for this price ...hotttttttt...

You couldn't ask for mor at this price. Spec for the price is top nothc. Beats my desktop easily - and this has a battery!

Shame it's only 1600x900. To me, that's low-res even on a15.6" screen, never mind 17"

If this was 1080p.

Nout wrong with 1600x900. My laptop is 17.3 with that res and I've never really felt like I needed a higher res, can fit two windows quite easily on it.

Just to warn a few of you guys there's a lot of bloatware on this laptop. I'd recommend un installing Norton as soon as you get it

How does it compare to this deal?

I vote for ASUS since it has better screen, blu-ray, 630m performs almost as well as HD 7670m and also 17.3'' maight be too big for some.
Samsung however has i7 CPU.

Samsung has :
Samsung Brand
2GB more RAM
250GB more HDD space
I7 QUAD core 3rd gen many being sold at this price are DUAL core.
17inch screen
2yr Warranty with Costco and free IT support.

If you like to watch BLU RAY on a laptop with 15" screen then go for the Asus, otherwise £50 more for the above additional specs is better. Or if you want a smaller screen but great specs then try amazon.co.uk/Asu…mr0

Why would you do that?

I recently bought an Acer and it would help this to replace an older Toshiba laptop that the kids use. Tempted but with the economic forecast as bad as our weather I may give it a miss.

It's because it's quite a change from previous incarnations of windows and some, well quite a few of the interface choices are not implemented well at all. I use the desktop mode 99% of the time when I use Windows 8, but I do like hitting the windows key and just typing a search, that is quicker than other windows versions or at least it feels it. Anyway let's see how Windows "Blue" is when it's released later this year.

How different is Windows 8 to Windows 7 for someone who has never ever used it?

The start menu has been replaced with a tile based start menu, so when Windows 8 boots up, it boots to a tile based interface. You can still go to the desktop by clicking the desktop icon or pressing CTRL - D. Windows 8 has some extra features over Windows 7 such as a refresh pc function to speed up Windows if it ever slows down, it also has File History which uses an external HDD/USB drive or network drive to backup you files and you can recover them by date. It's quicker to boot than Windows 7, but it seems slower in general operation to Windows 7. I'd say if you already have Windows 7 you probably won't want to upgrade. If buying a new machine it's easy enough to learn and cope with, just learn a few of the keyboard shortcuts. If you want it to look like Windows 7 or operate more like Windows 7 try a free start menu utility such as Classic Shell or Pokki.

The main problem is how MS have tried to implement a touch based interface with the normal desktop interface, there's plenty of design flaws, which break general consistent rules of design. Good news though, you absolutely do not need a touch screen to operate Windows 8, it's much easier to use a touchpad if you're using a laptop.

A quick tip :

You can swipe from the right hand side of the touchpad inwards to bring up the Charms menu. The default action swiping in from the left is a flaw, when swiping in from the left it swaps between apps, so you could be using one app then accidently swap to another fullscreen app, very annoying. To fix this and I think this is a better option, go to Charms menu > Settings > Change PC Settings > General > In the section "App Switching" switch off "When I swipe in from the left edge, switch to my most recent app". What this does is bring out a task switcher menu on the left hand side, with thumbnails of apps, but the most useful aspect of this, is you can right click an app thumbnail and close it. Closing the tile apps is ridiculous without this setting, as you have to drag the app down from the top of the screen to close it.

Just to point out that this also has a 2GB DEDICATED ATI GRAPHICS CARD making it one of the only laptops of this price range suitable for serious gaming. It's a fantastic deal from that point of view if you have a small living space and want to do away with your desktop.

Great deal! Plus a 2 year warranty from Costco, who are #1 for service if there are ever any issues. Can't be beat, I don't think.

I experienced the same problem as you. Start Menu 8 would have easily fixed your problem without all the hassle of returning it.
