Still sub £400; which is very good for the same TV my insurance company tried to fob me off with (to replace my unrepairable Toshiba DLP TV) - until I pointed out 42" isn't "similar" in spec (the old one was 52") - that cost them a shed load extra (as the cheapest 52" one they could find was a low end spec "badged" Sony heap of junk @ £1300; which I upgraded to a decent Samsung).

Argh, don't know what to do, is this a good deal, or is it a bad tv at a price to get rid of?

Isn't it a plasma?

I've bottled out, I nearly bought one but need to do some research.

its not that great for a plasma a plasma should be at least 50k contrast
# Resolution 1024 x 768
# Contrast ratio 20,000:1
# Brightness 1500 cd/m2
and resolution its the same spec as my 4yr old dell laptop !!!
ok for its size but personally i would prob not bother you can prob get a bush from asda with better res

And that's where a bit of research comes in handy, you would rather buy a higher res Bush? Read up what makes a decent picture, pixels isn't everything (and the Bush would be an LCD:w00t:). This is a pretty good price for what you are getting.

I would go for the Panasonic, it's only the px8 and not the px80 but not a huge difference and build quality is better than Samsung. Both are perfectly good though for this sort of price. I find Plasma gives a far more natural picture for TV viewing than LCD (have both in the house) I will admit LCD has it's place, especially for PC use, but plasma all the way for TV viewing.

If anyone wants more info then I know there's plenty on AV forums for all these models listed at the moment.

If that 1080i 42" rear projection Samsung is a DLP TV, I'd say he's better off keeping that.

Your kid is very lucky!

I'm sure they will be very happy with this tele.

m sat watching the 50" version of this set right now, we bought it about 12 months ago and have had 12 months trouble free and enjoyable viewing on it, good picture for normal SD and HD is excellent, have used Sky HD, PS3 and Blueray on it and it copes fine with everything and always produces good results, its downside is that the speakers are poor, not a problem for us as we use an amp and speakers anyway, but as a standalone unit you might be disappointed with teh bass on it, but even if you hook a cheap surround system to it them it will improve it no end!

The stand for it is also a bit flimsy, but we have ours on teh wall so that doesnt matter to us.

Have also plugged the laptop in to it as well and that gave excellent results, the photos and films etc I viewed on it were really good, colours were rich and deep and it all looked like it should :-)

Enjoy the TV for what it is, a branded plasma which isnt the highest spec but is certainly capable for the majority of uses for the majority of homes, and at the price its an excellent prce, enjoy it

Just enjoy it and get the settings right for your eyes, and you should be very pleased with it, and just in time for Xmas too, cant be bad :-D:-D

Thanks for this James, I appreciate you reporting how you've found this tv. I'm no expert and get confused re tv specs but wanted a 'decent' tv.

Reading your feedback sets my mind at rest that I made the right decision.

I decided to order it and hopefully we won't have any regrets.

I think many of us got this tv from Littlewoods last Nov/Dec when they did a 20% off thing. Came to around £360-380 including Quidco.

I've got one and it's a good value set. Obviously not the most hi-tech but for a shade under £400 it's not bad. But i'd spend an extra £120 and get the Panny X10 from Richersounds and the like instead.

It was a bargain last year but not amazing considering it's one year on and still the same price.

FYI, the picture is great on XBOX360 via HDMI. The freeview is a bit slow switching channels for my liking but if your running through a skybox etc, it wont be a problem. Picture quality is very good and natural...can not fault it really.

Contrast "figures" are entirely dreamed up by the marketing department. All about who lies more than the other company.

In reality, when you measure these things with a colorimeter, very few sets get over 2000:1, and many are less than half that.

No problem, at the end of the day, once you have it set up to suit your eyes I am sure you will be very happy, just spend tiem adjusting the settings, watch it, adjust them again, watch it etc etc etc until you get it right (that applies with any plasma screen) as only you will knwo when you have a decent picture, just enjoy the set and at that price it does mean excellent value in my eyes.

I have a plasma and really cant understand why anyone would buy one over an LCD. I was told Plasma all the way for picture quality etc, and whilst it is very good it is severely let down by ghosting issues escpecailly after playing on the PS3, the images stay for ages and have some blue flashing patches....i would not buy Plasma again...
