First Post Guys... Go Easy....

good deal : )

Don't forget 4% Quidco too!

HOT! Although would never get away with it as a bit too big for my living room.

good price! hot.

I was going to post the 32LXD85 for £450 as a good deal but this does seem much better value. Would this have 24p, 100hz etc?

I vote....... HOT. Good first post!

i dont think it does 1080p, but still a good deal though.

can anyone please advise me wether to get a LCD or a Plasma...

LG 42LG5010 (42LG5000) 42" HD Ready 1080p Digital LCD TV

As the title says this is HD "Ready" only. If dixons specs are to be belived this screen is only 1024 pixels wide. So forget 1080p, thats not even 720p. 720p is 1280 pixels wide. I think in this day & age I'd expect at least 720p for this price.

The Panasonic 32LXD85 is one brilliant TV, it's 720p HD puts a lot of 1080p 32" TV's to shame. They've got the picture bang on with this TV, with the 100hz etc. and £450 for that is a steal, although Argos are offering it for £484.94 with a 3 year warranty, if people are going for a 32" TV, this is the one to get, forget about 1080p on a 32" and go for the 100hz you won't be disappointed.

Heat added for the original post as well, sorry to hijack the thread.

For at TV to be HD ready it has to be 720p, as in 720 horizontal lines. This TV is therefore HD ready. It will also produce a better SD and HD picture than most TVs in the price range. It's a bargain.

can anyone please advise me wether to get a LCD or a Plasma...

Games, pc use - LCD

Films, tv and games - Plasma

The screen is 1080 i not 1080p that is important... 1080 i is a lower res screen than the p (progressive scanning), the i gives a slower refresh rate look on wikipedia for a full explanation. Good size but get get it home and football will look not so good

really really hot! a plasma is not my style but in comparison, i bought a samsung 37 inch LCD about a month ago off play for the exact same price (although i did get a free stand worth 50 quid )

SD football will look better on this than most lcds, while sky hd, etc, only output to 1080i anyhow.

Sorry, but my Panasonic px80 (HD ready, NOT full HD) Using skyHD is fantastic with football, rugby etc.

I bet you wont be able to see the difference below 50':whistling: (runs at 720p)

1080i and 1080p are the same resolution - its just that with 1080i only half the image is updated during each screen refresh - i.e. alternate scan lines - or to give it its proper name, interlacing - hence the 'i' designation in the name - whereas 1080p as you correctly point out is 'progressive scan' whereby all the lines are refreshed at the same time - giving an image which is less susceptible to 'tearing' when there is a lot of movement on the screen.... the refresh rates of a 1080i and 1080p panel may be the same ('i' does not mean a slower refresh rate per se, depending on how you interpret it), but only half the image is being updated at any one time with a 1080i panel - everyones vision has different levels of sensitivity and how big a deal the difference is is down to personal preference and the perception of the individual.

For those not in the know: try not to get too caught up with the specfications, if image quality is what matters to you.

As a rule, for movie/TV watching, plasma blows LCD out of the water, especially when viewing SD (standard definition content, which most of us use right now).

In most tests, where LCDs are compared against similarly priced plasma TVs, plasmas, generally win the fight.

Where LCD really wins console gaming. Also, LCD TVs are available in smaller screens as well as larger sizes, whereas Plasmas tend to be available only in (larger) 37"+ sizes.

And dont be swayed by people claiming that plasmas are inferior because of their lower resolutions. There are plenty of 720p plasmas that offer far better image quality than 1080p LCD TVs, when viewing TV and movie footage. LCD supporters tend to ignore this.

Just read the reviews of a particular TV that you are looking to buy and buy the one that most suits the uses that you will put it too - ie. buying a 46" 1080p LCD TV isnt going to be the best choice if all you will do is watch Freeview/SKY SD TV and SD DVDs.

There is a very good reason why most AV enthusiasts drool over the Pioneer Kuro Plasma TVs - they beat pretty much all other plasma and LCD TVs (at their given price-points), into the ground. The LCD makers havent yet come up with a response to the Kuro, which may be due to tecnical limitations currently faced by LCD makers.

Like JaiRo stated:
"Games, pc use - LCD
Films, tv and games - Plasma"

PS. Although it may seem that I am a plasma fanboy, I still believe that in 10yrs time, plasma will be extinct, while LCD will set the standard.

Is that definitively the same TV?

Firstly, good post.....but did you steal this from my post on an earlier thread today....:?

Plasma vs lcd..... Plasma for a start reflects light, so not too good if you have bright lights or position it near a sunny window (doubtful in England). Plasma can also burning repetative images into the screen, so if you uise sky and often fall asleep with the tv on with the guide displayed, it will start to remain permenantly...

Both of those issues meant I bought a Full HD 1080p Samsung screen...however the 1080p isn't the reason it has such a good picture. The resolution and contrast ratio are more important on a 40" screen, the difference between 720 and 1080 on a screen of 40/42" is very hard to notice.

If you are looking to buy a t.v this size, it's really worth investigating thoroughly instead of just going for the deal on a whim.

Yes this would be whim..................

But at that price not much lost, so has anyone got one, any thoughts etc etc.......................

I would like a panasonic PZ80 but its xmas and i'm not flush, so could make do with something less ???!!!!:santa:

I've got bored of the 720p 1080i 1080p arguements that inevitably surface anytime a non-1080p TV deal is posted.

Guess what guys, I bet most of you won't even see the difference if HD material was fed to a 1080p and SD (yes standard def) 42" screens. We get too caught up in numbers and wiki facts. For your info we ran this test at an expo with 37" flat screens and the results were evenly split.

The points made on LCD v Plasma are spot on, but there far less risk of getting plasma screen burn these days.

Am I missing something on the Dixons page? The warranty that is mentioned is an optional £169 for 3 years. Does this come with a standard 12 months or nothing at all?
