Samsung, why not just get a non brand piece of black plastic. Posers.

This is a good laptop, light weight, running cool and quite. A friend of mine just bought it and no problem at all. However, it was at 489POUNDS not 549!

I just recently bought the Dell XPS 15 for £549 at a better spec than this
Loving the usb 3.0 ports and the JBL speakers are amazing

Better deals than this out there

Rubbish comment!

The lappy has good specs but seems expensive, although I haven't searched for a cheaper alternative (14" is too small for me). Why not just buy if you are happy with the specs?

This is all helpful guys - thanks - I've looked at the Dell outlet a lot hoping to get a good deal. The XPS 15 looks good, but I've heard the battery life is not great - the Samsung's 6 hours would be really useful. I'll ignore Spark's first comment cause its just pointless.

I'd love some alternatives (with links) if anyone can suggest!

Ok, the cheapest I can ge the Inspiron 15R for is £579 (nothing even close in the outlet). Slightly better CPU, 1GB more RAM and Radeon 5650 instead of the Nvidia 310M (an improvement I think). Bigger, heavier and far worse battery life.

You hit the nail on the head - the best thing about this Samsung laptop is that it's very light and has a great battery life. I recently bought the 13" version, but have been looking at this one for my nephew too. And, in my experience, the quality of Samsung's build is also excellent.

Forgot to add that this is the best price for this laptop I've seen so far! Don't know what saveonlaptops are like though.

i have been looking for a sub-£500 13-14" laptop for the last week... the best two I have found are:

Acer Timeline 4820t X - i3
currys.co.uk/gbu…tml

Dell Adamo Onyx 13
saveonlaptops.co.uk/Del…tml

I just got the Dell, as I am upgrading from a netbook, so want small and light

I've been looking for a laptop at around this size, 13.3 - 14" maximum so that I can carry it around easily. I had a 15.4 laptop and never took it out. I want something smallish & light, with a reasonable battery life.

I saw somebody posted that there friend got it for £489 please post a link or let us know where he got it from. This price Im not sure, that price could seal the deal for me lol

Look for model DM4-1150EA, better specs and similar price. Could possibly also go thjrough Quidco first. I brought one, simpl;y brilliant.

A little warning on Samsungs; I can give a list of at least a DOZEN separate Samsung products (including one laptop) that have failed me or a member of my family. I could list them and the problems, but it would be a waste of time. Samsung generally have stunning looks, excellent specs on paper, but utter rubbish build quality.

+1

In my experience, the quality of Samsung's build is excellent. Unlike many makers (who buy in and assemble outsourced components) they manufacture up to 80% of what goes into their own laptops, so can control the quality. I also think Dell used to be good for this, but seemed to have lost the edge a bit these days.

You are right, it is a matter of opinion when you speak in abstract. However, it is a matter of fact when EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT DEVICES from the same manufacturer fails within a space of four years in the same family. We as a family have hundreds of different devices and appliances and I cannot recall any other brand failing on more than one device, mostly they have never failed and have merely been upgraded.

In terms of the HP, I agree that some have been poorly built in the recent past. However, my experience of this particular machine thus far has been excellent. Hopefully, it will stay this way.

Let me give you a list of Samsung failures:

1. Three x Samsung UE46B8000, all returned within three months, due to appalling clouding, shadowing, poor sound
2. Samsung Plasma, practically blew up.
3. Samsung Plasma, keeps deciding to switch itself off
4. Samsung :Laptop, after one week decided to switch itself on and off at will or not turn on at all.
5. Three x Samsung Tocco Lite mobile phone within seven months, either switch off, will not lock onto a network or no sound
6. Samsung i8510 mobile phone, decides to freeze on a random basis
7. Two x Samsung Sky+HD Box (fastest of the lot) but prone to freezing or reduced functions. Always needing a hard reset to restore functionality
8. Samsung Netbook, frequently freezes even when no applications are running

and so on an so on.

First off, the link you gave had integrated HD graphics - compared to the discreet GeForce 310M from the Samsung. This is really important to me, as I play a lot of (older) games on my lappy when away with work. I am a little put off by your comments about Samsungs build quality though - the reviews all say this is put together really well.

I cannot comment on the build quality or otherwise of this particular Samsung laptop as I have no personal experience of it. I, too, read many reviews before buying Samsung products; always excellent reviews BUT my and my family's (and many friends and colleague) experience would suggest otherwise. I tried to give a fair representation of my experience and in future I will avoid all things Samsungs.

Also, note the investigation by BBC Watchdog on Samsung American Style Fridge Freezers. Another example of poorly built appliance.

In terms of the Laptop, if discrete graphics are essential to you then the HP I quoted is no good for you. See if there is anything else in the link that gives what you require. Good luck.

any deal about on the smaller one of this? the q330? or Toshiba r630 or r700 ? they seem portable and quite powerful, not as good graphics as this though

You were looking for a gaming laptop, this seems to fit the bill.

A friend has an Acer laptop and considers it to be an excellent machine. I have two Acer Laptops (for the kids) (four years old), a bit ugly but work well and no problems thus far apart from one charger dying.

Thanks tpol! The reason I'm in this situation is because my second Acer 3810tzg has failed in as many months. First was fan second was backlight. I suspect its just the model, not all Acers, but I'm still going to stearclear for a while. Going with the dell inspiron 15R, with radeon 4650 - £510.
