Here’s hoping Samsung drop their prices on their website so I can get student discount on top. Looking for the Q85R 55”

I must say, these QLED sets are lovey but the Q80R is just not good enough over the Q70R to warrant buying it. The contrast ratio is awful and it crushes blacks so badly. It’s a shame, because the other modes fit their placement in the range (and price tags) pretty well.

I’ve seen reports of the crushing, not as bad as some will have you believe, but it’s there

I went and watched the range in my local Curry’s for far too long and the Q80R does some odd things to blacks the other models don’t. Also, the lower contrast ratio is immediately obvious between it and the Q70R, which is a massive shame. Love the non reflective screen though and the design.

I’d just like TV manufactures to genuinely make their incremental model changes an improvement over each other, rather than muddling things up so much!
If this hits £900 or lower, I'm going for it

People moan about Apple, but at least you know “more expensive means better”. TVs are a nightmare! But we love it haha
Are Samsung expected to have further price drops tomorrow?
Just tidied up the description - it was a bit of a mess, sorry

We can only hope. Richer Sounds have dropped the Q70R 55” to £799, which is a bargain. It’s still £1,000 at Samsung.

Does the Q85 have this crushing issue as well?
Nice price, although probably best to go for the Q70R, as mentioned above, £799 also from RS.

Is this via unidays?
TV20 coupon might get you an additional £20 off as well?

I just got the 55" Q70r for £779 using that code (was £799).

I took your advice and went for the Q70R.

£779 with coupon TV20.
Could anyone please explain this crushing blacks? And is it a good thing or bad? Really want to go for the Q70R but now I just don't know.

So this model is no good?:S
From Avforums - the Q80R is different in Europe to the USA and the European version of the Q80R is the Q85R

If you look at their best buy guide at avforums.com/thr…70/ I would personally be looking at the Q70R - save £200 or the LG 55B9 or Philips 55OLED754 if I was looking at spending a £1000 or so.

Does the Q85 have this crushing issue as well?

No. It’s basically the Q90R but with 100 dimming zones instead of 490. It gets rave reviews and they almost all say it’s a hard toss up between it and the Q90R, especially now the Q85R is cheaper.
rawdi0729/11/2019 08:24

So this model is no good?:S

This model is good, way better than a standard LED set, but for some reason despite being mid-range in the QLED range it has some issues which make it a tough call over the lower end Q70R.

The Q70R has double the contrast ratio, so blacks are much better but it is only about half as bright (750nits to 1,200nits). It also has a highly reflective screen. It has less dimming as well, but the contrast makes up for it. It’s pretty cheap as well co soldering what you get.

The Q80R has worse blacks and crushes them a lot (so dark scenes are made overly dark), but it’s much brighter and reflects very little. It has more powerful dimming, but the contrast issues almost cancel that out. It’s also £200 more expensive.

Basically, if you’re on a budget under a grand I’d go for the Q70R in as big as a size as you can find. Richer Sounds are doing the 55” for £799, so you might find the 65” for £1,000. If spending over £1,000, I’d go for the Q85R in 55”. It’s vastly superior and, as you’ll read in every review, almost as good as the top of the range Q90R which costs about £1,500 (if you can find one in stock).

“Crushing blacks” means that in dark scenes the TV struggles to pick out details so instead of showing those details it basically crushes them to black to make the rest of the image pop more. Think of the film “Gravity” when they are stuck in space - good TVs will make all the stars twinkle even in the darkest corners. Poorer TVs will crush the stars there to black, but make the rest of the scene that bit brighter.

The Q70R has only 50 dimming areas so can only do so much, but it has contrast rates on par with the top of the range Q90R so can make a really nice image with minimal crushing. The Q80R on the other hand has really poor contrast rates (worse than cheaper competitors) and in the UK at least the same dimming tech as the Q70R, so images look poorer albeit much brighter due to the much higher nit output (about 1,200 to 750).

It’s a shame, because the Q80R also has brilliant anti-reflective tech so can help make the TV look darker by not casting reflections, but the difference in black levels is clearly visible. However, if you only had this TV to base opinion on compared to whatever your old model is, it’ll look much better. It’s so tough buying a TV!

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I have a 2012 Sony TV and want to get something somewhat decent and thought about Q70R. After watching Rtings review I am actually more confused than before. Nightmare.

I mean, the Q70R will blow anything from 2012 out the water and between the other models in the range (not even accounting for the competition) it’s very good for the price in some ways and then not so great in others. I’m still sticking with the Q85R 55” though. Seems to be best value for the price vs features.

I've just been to JL and the q90 is only £200 more than the 85
I need to show some restraint

The differences between the Q85R and Q90R are minimal. Q90R has 490 dimming zones instead of 90 on the Q85R so it is more detailed in that sense and it’s also about 500nits brighter. But most reviews state that unless you have the money to spare, there’s very little in it especially now prices have come down.
What about motion issues, flickering and judder in Samsung Q70, Q80? Is it common issue especially in sport programs?

I found it a bit off, but turning motion settings off improved it a lot. Not sure for sports

I just returned q67 and hanged q70 on wall. Q70 is far much better in motion aspect even with Auto motion plus on. Colours are richer as well. Have dilemma now to use my soundbar, because sound from q70 TV speakers is very good as well compared to q67.

lol - if they did a TV, it'd be a Samsung underneath, or Sony, with the Apple logo, and you'll be charged double for the privilege!
