they should probably of added a movie that would sweeten the deal.. not put people off

Good deal, RRP and Amazon price is £75.

£62.91 on Scan just for a bare 500GB Samsung 2.5" SATA

Hah, just ranted at my partner about this. Sure it's a good deal, but WHY would I want a movie pre loaded onto my HDD? Particularly that one!

Apples and pears. There is no SATA drive inside this. The usb interface is connected directly onto the drive in place of SATA. It will look something like this inside:

No good for opening to upgrade your laptop's hard disk.

Not really. I was using the price as a reference for 500GB of portable storage space. Some people buy internal drives to slap in an external enclosure, which I was showing would be more expensive. At no point did I suggest this should be bought with the intention of ripping apart and taking the drive out... ;-)

Nice price, very tempting.

Is this the Samsung model that has the quick transfer speeds? Does anybody know how this compares to the recent WD 500GB drive posted here recently? Thanks

Great price, I may buy one when I finish work tonight.

Heat and rep added, thanks very much.

Importantly: will the credit card inside the actual drive be real?

Nice price! Anyone know much about Samsung hard drives?! Thats if it is Samsung who actually make the hard drive inside?!

Samsung do make their own hard drives and they'd be shooting themselves in the foot here if they used someone else's I think

It's a loaded question. No matter what HDD manufacturer you ask about you will get people chiming in about how their drive failed on them and no one should buy drives from this manufacturer :whistling: The truth is every manufacturer has had their drives fail on some poor sod.

Samsung, in my opinion, probably give the best balance of performance mixed with very low noise so that's why I choose them for my own systems and for builds and repairs for customers. Not had one die yet. WD are next on my list and although I had one die on me in the past, I won't hold that against them as it's inevitable eventually.

Cheers for the info. I did a little digging and found a very useful article here

The Samsung does quite well! And at this price I think im gonna order one!

I think it's a real bargain. Looking on Ebuyer at drives in this price range and they're all 320GB

I have ordered one, heat added. Thanks OP!

It's USB, that's going to be the limitation and not the hard drive. If you want fast then you'll have to spend a bit extra and get an eSATA one and put up with it having two cables.

It says on the eBuyer site that you can buy up until 11pm for next day delivery but the nearest day is Monday?

I brought one just the other day from CCL for around £65,, so I could upgrade to Windows 7.

I have around 250gb of data I needed to back up from my laptop, and must admit I am not impressed with the speed. I left it for 5 hours, and it was only 40% done. Ended up leaving it over night. The laptop was USB2 in case anyone asks.

Still, it is a lovely looking device, and almost silent.

That's an average of 5.6 MB/s. Even the theoretical maximum for USB 1.1 is just 1.5MB/s so it's definitely operating at USB2 speeds.

The reason you got 5 MB/s instead of 25-30 MB/s is probably what you were backing up, did some of the stuff you were transferring consist of lots of small files?

Great Buy Just Ordered mine been looking for an external hd for a few weeks even better when you get a film as well ;-)

There are variations in performance from drive to drive over USB in terms of data transfer. Same applies to flash drives. The reviews I have read suggest that this drive is average. Still voted hot.
