I used to like this system, but there seems to have been a lack of development since it was launched

also, a single point of failure

I'm fundamentally against cloud services for home automation.

It links to multiple things? I think it’s a great system to link all your smart home items together.

I wouldn't buy this. All of my sensors broke after 3 months. I bought a starter kit. Motion sensor started sending me text messages about motion when there was non. It was odvously faulty because it was non stop. The door sensor stopped working too. The only thing that I'm still using is the presence sensor which turns on the lights when I come home.

I don’t agree with the lack of development, but that’s fine.

I definitely agree about the reliance on the cloud though. The unfortunate thing is that this is the route all new systems are going down as it is much easier to develop features in the cloud than on an embedded device. The hardware will always have much more restrictions in terms of memory and processing power, and upgrading firmware requires downtime. People demand the buy-in price to be low, this drives the spec of the hardware down, so they do all the smart stuff in the cloud instead, where there is infinite processing power and memory available.

But they had zero stock, can only be a hot deal if you can actually buy the thing!. This is the cheapest at the moment, so I've bought and voted hot

That usually means either the batteries aren’t sat properly or they need replacing. I’ve had the system for over a year and it’s been great for me.

They actually got stock and still got stock in Argos so thanx for reminding me that in voting.
Development is very much ongoing and the Smartthings community is very much alive and well.

Ive had ST since before it was released in the UK as I was on a test program. I have about five of the motion sensors - never had one break. I have a few of the door and multi sensors and again never had one break. I do occasionally get false alerts from the motion sensors though. The presence sensors on the other hand I have had one break and broken one myself. Personally I prefer using the Xiaomi sensors though and I have a much much larger number of these. I tried to grab a second hub at Argos the other day but missed out. I may grab one of these or wait as they are bound to drop to £50 somewhere else.
Amazon have it for £49.99 this morning.
Hub £50 squid on Amazon right now

It's up to each user wether they want cloud or local automations.
SmartThings provides plenty of devices that run locally and many have confirmed that there automations ran fine even though there was a outage.

Great enjoy.... I've had mine for a bit now and generally works brilliantly. Although as others have said, the presence sensors can be a bit weird. Both mine worked perfectly for a few months, but now one has started being a bit flaky for no particular reason despite a fresh battery.
Curry's more by far the cheapest in case anybody else reads this thread wanting to buy. £49 plus an extra 10% off.
