I've not really got any experience within any of them to tell the truth. This is me just starting to explore all the different options.

I've reserved Philips hue bulbs and hub from Maplin to pick up later and I recieved a Harmony Elite remote a week or two ago
What's the difference between motion sensor and presence sensor?

I want something that will turn the light on when my daughter comes out of her room at night to go to the toilet and turns off once she's gone back to bed.
(Or if anyone can recommend a cheaper alternative, I'm not planning on having any thing else smart in the house)

Something like this?
LED Night Light TeckNet Plug-and-Play Automatic Wall Lights With 3 Lighting Modes, Dual Motion & Light Sensor, Warm White Light, Energy Saving Design For Nurseries, Children's Bedroom, Living room amazon.co.uk/dp/…B4B
Reviews aren't as good as I'd want for something I'd depend on. Seems the sensors are unreliable

Smartthings sensors are no where near as good as the Xiaomi ones I have both and replacing my smarthings ones with Xiaomi and using smarthings hub
Xiaomi all the time
Fantastic products at budget prices.

I hsvnt got a plug socket so need it in the light fitting but thanks for your reply
Got this for £69.99 from Very before Christmas as they were offering £30 credit on an £80+ spend...always worth looking out for code if they’ve got it at the same price.
Where do folks buy the xiaomi tech?

Xiaomi all the timeFantastic products at budget prices.

You obviously didn't buy a Redmi Note 4 that was riddled with issues a week after recieving. Returning xiomi products is also a nightmare and expensive. It's a gamble imo.

If you only want that one auto on off then don’t bother with smart home stuff. Just get a pir bulb.

It would take a braver or richer person than I am to buy expensive tech like smart phones, tablets, laptops costing tens or hundreds of pounds from a shop in China. The language barrier, cost of posting something back there for a return, time frames involved, support, regardless of initial spend would need a heck of a leap of faith on my part.
Having said that, i just bought a Xiaomi door contact for about £6 or £7 pounds. People say they are better than the Samsung SmartThings ones and work with Samsung SmartThings. Don’t mind taking an informed punt at those sort or prices. If that goes well I will probably get more and also go for their presence sensors as well which seem to cost just pounds fairly regularly during the year

No worries. I haven’t actually got one... be interested to know if it works out. Only just found out about them myself.
Home Assistant or Hass.io is a very good alternative

Barring dead on arrival issues, most likely bad reviews are from people that don't know what they're doing. It's a open platform that needs input from the user to make it do anything meaningful. Without a bit of legwork, it can be frustrating so I'm not surprised that the are bad reviews. You're better of watching YouTube reviews by explained users, to get a good idea is how useful it is.

I've got a pack of three of these for my elderly parents. One at the bottom of stairs, one midway and the other at the top of the stairs. They're battery operated, so easy installation.

PIR lights.

Hue one is easier to set up. Independent sensor gives way more flexibility via hub. But - no lux sensor.

Go with motion sensor. Presence sensor will tell the hub that it arrived home.

I've tried and failed with a door sensor recently. Open to suggestions from anyone On setting up but I've tried the handler and manual way of adding it with catch all

I used the DTH linked in the video below and used catchall to get device ID. It worked first time for me. I used the Xiaomi mijia door sensor rather than the aqara ones, if it makes a difference.

I have one and it's been working fine for 4 months, just switches on a pair of lights at different times of the day. Xiaomi are cheaper but I've had a few issues with thier motion sensor.

Getting the catch all to work can be a pain, I ended up a long then a short press on the sensor reset pin. I have the buttons, magnetic working fine motion I did have working but need to play with more.
