Samsung SMT S7800 Freesat + HD Box - just £169 with cashback at Richer Sounds

Found 16th Aug 2011
Richer Sounds have the top of the range Samsung Freesat+ box at a great £169.99.

Requires Samsung £30 cashback:
samsung.com/uk/…ck/

When released there were a couple of bugs, but these have now been fixed making this the best Freesat + HD box you can get. It has iPlayer and ITV Player built in, and even access to Youtube (unlike the Humax).

Edit: some people are getting this more cheaply from Richer Sounds or other places price matching so read all the posts before you pay what I did!

Richers blurb say that the £169 price already includes the £30 discount.

In their description it says:

Hmm - thats a bit confusing - as the 5 year warranty price is 10% more and that has been worked out on a price of £169.99 - so are they selling you the box for £169.99 and they have already taken the cashback? Or are they seeling you the box for £199.99 - but have randomly discounted the warranty?

Or, are they selling you the box for £169.99 and then you can claim the cashback making a final prce of £139.99 as I have stated?

I will find out as I have ordered one. Worse case scenario is that the box is £199.99 before the discount - which is still the cheapest by a tenner...

It clearly states, 'price includes £30 cashback from samsung'
As i say though - that makes the 5 year warranty cost quite confusing - if the box is really £199 - the warranty should be £19.99 - there is one sure fire way to find this out - I'll let you know when I pick up the box later!.. As I said further up - this is still the cheapest deal going. Boxes sell for about £170 second hand.
If people had a choice out of freeview hd or freesat hd which would be the best option as I can use both in my area

I'd say there isn't a best option.

Freeview only needs an aerial and one run of cable. Freesat needs a dish, an LNB with a minimum of two outputs and two runs of cable.

Freesat has a greater number of channels available and the SD content is higher resolution than the equivalent on Freeview due to the higher bitrate used for SD on Freesat.

Although there is a big overlap in available channels some are unique to Freesat e.g. CBS channels and others are unique to Freeview eg Dave.

So Freesat content is better than Freeview, but Freeview is easier to set up than Freesat.

Freesat purely because it has much more bandwidth to accommodate more channels.

Ok great thanks I know it might sound stupid but the only thing stopping me going to freesat from freeview is they have sky news which is what I watch a lot of
Minus 22!.. None of the cold votes are posting this cheaper.. Even if it does end up costing £169.99 in total.. Sneaky..

You should still get Sky News on a Freesat box but by it's not actually a Freesat channel. Most Freesat boxes have a facility to tune "other" channels and since Sky news is not encrypted this could be used to receive it.

Well played. Although I think I would pay the extra £1.04 to avoid the 7-10 day delivery stated.
Sky News is available on Freesat by tuning in "non freesat chanels".......but it will NOT appear on the freesat epg.

lol, lets just leave it there or we'll be on about it all night, good deal nonetheless
yeah the reason for finding this is I am moving from sky to freesat - so whatever the price is £139 - £169 - less than 4 months of sky fees will pay for the box..

Does anyone know if there is any intention to improve the web tv offering to more than youtube? It would be great for me if this had lovefilm streaming - as I will miss sky movies..
Yep - I got this wrong - it is £199.99 paid at the tills - then you send off the receipt to get the £30 cashback.

This is still a very good price for the box, alongside the hi spek offer submitted in this thread (which is good if you are nowhere near a Richer Sounds). Can't wait to get it home and try it now I have released myself from the £50 per month payment to sky!..
Oh - also worth considering as ever with Richer sounds the warranties are as cheap as you can get - in this case it is £19.99 - which if you don't use it in the five year period they refund.

Sure you have to remember to claim it back and there is a small time value of money, but I think it represents a great price - especially given the problems over the years I have had with my sky box.. Sounds stupid but I tend to leave the TV on for the cat and I think it therefore gets a lot of hours use!
I've read lots of reviews suggesting this unit has a lot of bugs!!
I know there was a recent firmware update in June 2011 - but still doesn't look like a finished product.
You could get best buy to price-match and get it slightly cheaper and also get quidco cash back!!

Actually best buy might match to £169 - worth trying.

How can you get them to price match online? I would have thought this would be done in store, therefore no quidco

And you end up with a similar price including free delivery.

I was replying Mervinsx's statement that bestbuy might pricematch and you can get quidco but if with quidco and a 15% off voucher you can get it for the same price then that is great for people who don't live near a RS.
Weird. Called my local richer sounds and was told that the price was £169 with no mention about applying for cashback after. Voted hot!

Agree. That doesn't seem to bother many who order something if it's a bargain, even if they don't have a need for it - then flog it on.
Although I think there may be a few glitches with the software - for the deal, I think it's good value and so I placed an order with Best Buy over the telephone. Best Buy matched Richer Sounds price of £169.95 and gave 10% of the difference as well, being delivered free on Saturday. I could now use the cash back claim form to get another £30 off Samsung. Therefore, this ends up costing me £131 something.

One could take the punt and order online using Quidco and get 6% but will have to ring Best Buy after delivery to price match Richer Sounds - I didn't have the patience!

I'm planning on using it and it's not for flogging it on!

I will try what you did with bestbuy tom.

I will not be flogging I need it because we finished with sky last week and miss the recorder function - will also be great to have iplayer and youtube.

Looks like the sky hd boox will be going ebay - they seem to go for about £42

Nice! Good luck and let us know, if you managed to get the order in.

42 pages of info here, if anyone is interested - forums.digitalspy.co.uk/sho…462
Wow - bit gutted I ordered before this bestbuy masterplan came up!..
Oh well - think I'll stick with it - Richer Sounds have been good to me with bargains over the years so don't want to mess them about and £169 seems like a fair price.

Good luck to anyone getting the best buy deal - that is a bargain!..

Good call on selling the skybox too - mine shall be going on the bay.

I will not put mine on ebay yet
If you buy through quidco from bestbuy at 249.99, use a 15% code and track for CB, will it be effected if you contact BB afterwards for a pricematch?
with regards to the £30 CB from Samsung, do you have to take their credit card to get one because it asks you to confirm that you agree to the T&Cs of the card before you submit the claim
I believe you receive some kind of £30 pre pay card from them? Rather than real cash..
