I'd be weary of buying HD's from ebuyer, learnt my lesson with them now.... they get grey imports meaning the warranty is with them and not the manufacturer.... Worth the extra £2 from amazon IMO

except you really have no more guarantee amazon ones are not from outside the region where Samsung will offer warranty. (Fair enough they might be so the serial check will indicate it offers warranty)

This is the best one for the PS3, toshiba do a 9.5mm 750gb one but is about £75/£80..... So not worth it for another 110gb

Yes you do, Amazon guarantee not to sell grey imports wth clearly indicating so. The FIRST thing I always do when I get a new drive though is check the serial on the manus website, atleast with amazon you can return it for free, you can't with ebuyer

to be honest, i've never had any issues with ebuyer mate

I have 2 640gb m7 drives and they are bit slower in ps3 than the drives they replaced 2x 60gb seagate momentus. ST96812AS. I expect a few manufacturers non enhanced drives suffer from this whilst installed to the ps3 with the way the system treats them. Co's the drives outside this environment are quit speedy.

Overall though gigabyte vs a little loss in speed especially over replacing a mean 60gig is fantastic for the price (and especially if you buy 2 to get free delivery)

kikatek.com/pro…gle

£45.64 delivered only 3 in stock and quite possibly only retailer warranty

Amazon one would be best option if they def have a policy of not selling grey imports.

This has been pretty much superceded by the Samsung 640GB MP4, for a couple of extra quid you get a 7200rpm drive, with a 16MB Cache - 9mm height - this is the drive to get.

You have to use the Samsung ES tool software from the Samsung website to change the speed of the drive to suit the PS3.

As standard this drive is set at the 300 gbps speed when it needs to be set at 150 in the PS3 otherwise there will lag and delays in loading and installing.

As there are no external jumpers on the hard drive, the only way to change the setting is via the Samsung software.

You can take your drive out your PS3 at any point, stick it in a PC and change the setting without it touching your PS3 data. It's a definite must do if you have this drive or are planning to get one as the speed difference is very noticeable.

maybe, I know I forgot to set them to sata 150.

7200 rpm generates more heat

Original Poster

dontasciime, it may produce more heat, but if you slow it down to the ps3 speed, then it will be much cooler.

The samsung m7 is a 5400rpm drive ... the mp4 is the 7200 rpm drive which you cannot set to 5400rpm in ps3.

dontasciime...mate can you pls try the Samsung ES tool and let us know what you make of it?

Thanks!

nice :P

I bought this when it was previously listed here for the same price. Running fine in a Macbook 2010.

I've just bought a 640gb and want to replace my 40gb HDD I don't want to lose my data and heard I have to buy a external drive to copy over the data first what's the cheapest way if doing this?

shouldn't price be £47.97 with delivery

Tested this last night and got mine set to SATA 1.5 using the ES tool. Only issue is I found it would only install the CD-ROM driver (and therefore load) when the SATA mode was set to 'IDE compatible'. I did not have a floppy drive to hand. Worked fine though - definitely notice the difference on my 641JI.

Nice one for that info. Have a 'like' on me!

Interestingly even though the drive lags in SATA 3.0 mode on the PS3, on a jailbroken model and using an ftp server the throughput is almost double what it is on the default provided drive.

gfunk so is this drive better or a 7200rpm?

Got one of these in my JTAG Xbox 360, cracking drive. Paid about the same price last year on scans today only. Bargain

I've got two of these, one in each of my PS3's. Both from ebuyer, never had any issues. I also purchased one before as an external, and again no issues. All from ebuyer.

Thanks for the info regarding the setup to make them run better in the PS3, as I have noticed a bit of lag on iplayer, on a fast wired connection. So I'm assuming the HDD needs setting up properly. Very glad to hear it can be done with out losing PS3 data, so will give it a go tonight.

As for the deal itself, although good, its been this price for ages, possibly since it has been availbale on ebuyer.

Glad to have helped.

I dread to imagine how many people have bought these for their PS3 and haven't changed the setting yet. It really does make a big difference and is quick and easy to do.

Here is the link to the software - samsung.com/glo…tml

All you need to do is change the 'Set Max UDMA' to 150 and make sure it saves.

For about the same price you can get a Hitachi 500GB 7,200 RPM drive. Much better than the Sasmung mentioned here. Runs quieter and cooler as a bonus in addition to faster loading on your PS3 or laptop.

I'm one of those people, so thanks for the link.
I take it that it can be done via USB and en enclosure? If not I have spare SATA ports on my PC.

unlikely (you might be lucky), even your sata port is no guarantee, ... switch from AHCI to IDE emulated in bios if you cannot get drive to be either recognised or function correctly

It does normally show up us a drive with the USB enclosure, under Disk Manager, but it asks to format it if you click onto it. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
But I suppose it'll be quicker doing it the SATA way anyway, as I'm doing two, I can put them in otgether.

totally different scenario / low level

anyone that has just taken hdd out from ps3 and set drive to SATA 150 after installing back to ps3 and you get 8002a203 error DO NOT worry PSN is down for maintenance.

Typical. Just had a massive move about and can't find any writable discs anyway.
I've tried extracting the ISO, but its not executable. Will have to get a disc tomorrow.

I cant run the iso either, tried loading it onto a usb drive with no luck, any ideas?

^ switch to IDE / ATA ... IDE emulated in bios (instead of AHCI) save and exit your bios, burn the ISO to a CDR set your boot order to CD/DVD/ROM (my dell n5010 cannot boot estools if I press the boot menu key (f12) on my dell and it will not boot if I choose the DVD ROM drive as boot device from the boot menu accessed via f12 (it has to have the DVD ROM drive set as 1st boot device)(do not let windows boot) when changing from AHCI to ATA/IDE etc
