Cheapest I have seen this

Especially designed to dissipate heat while under operation, Samsung’s massive-capacity Story Station prevents heat build-up while performing data back-up. With an aluminium exterior cover and thoughtfully engineered ventilation system, this external hard drive always keeps its cool, which makes operation especially during continuous data back-up-uniquely safe, reliable and worry-free.

Good price for the item, so voted hot.

However, I have witnessed too many Samsung stories myself and I'll never spend my cash with them.

Have been using 2 x 1.5 TB versions of these for about 2 years with no problems. Guess people have different experiences.

... i have bought samsung internal HD's for a good few years now (basically because they are fast and quiet) .. recently a getting on for 3 year old 1TB samsung HD started to go on the fritz ... i remembered that samsung gave a 3 year waranty and emailed scan.co.uk (where i bought it) .. a week later i had a brand new samsung 1TB (latest model) as a replacement :-)

what i would do IMHO though is buy a copy of "spinrite" (or get a friend or helpful IT techie to do it for you) and run it in "maintenance mode" when you get any HD (from any manufacturer) - it does a thorough check of any potential problems .. i run this once every few months, hence seeing the problems with the 3 year old samsung HD before it became an issue :-)

with so many companies (like LG from my bitter experience) making it as difficult as possible for customers to have defective items under waranty replaced/repaired how refreshing is samsungs attitude !

I have been waiting for ages now for a cheap USB3 samsung story station >1TB external HD .. they have them in the US but for some reason not here :-( ... i will have to go for a WD i think i have waited far too long, my 5 yr old WD mybook is getting very long in the tooth now

+1 - I have 3 x 1.5TB model and so far they've all been good runners (knock on wood). Other handy thing is the case is easy to access if you intend to remove the hard disk at all (i.e. swap out to install into a computer or install a larger capacity hard disk).

been looking for one of these for a while...

I'm sure they are very reliable now, but when you get burnt badly by a company it's hard to go back to them.
