"That's right, at 10 feet, your eye can't resolve the difference between otherwise identical 1080p and 720p televisions. Extrapolating this out, you'd have to get a TV at least 77 inches diagonal before you'd start having a pixel visibility problem with 1080p"

4K = Good for mega large mega expensive TVs >77" (or better yet projectors). It's cost is totally unjustifiable for 40" TV in a living room. For a gaming monitor you sit 3-4 feet from, it's probably a good idea.

Stick with 1080P until 4K projectors get cheaper
it makes me really laugh when people expect and want a quad hd display on their tiny phones and yet moan about 4k on a 40". each to their own and their budget

Slightly off topic but....What I don't get is if all this Technology is so great and advanced yet they have to 'upscale' everything to '4k' why can't they just have a TV that reverts to 1080 (No difference between i & P) or 720 when the source needs it as upscaling is just wrong and doesn't really work, not so smart TV's is what they really are.

For me, £320 for a 4k Samsung smart TV is hot hot hot

Where does it say in this thread people expect and want quad HD on their phones! Not everyone does or even care or are more informed about what lies the companies feed people, as that is just as useless as a 4K 40" TV, people are generally sheep when it comes to technology and they far too easily believe the nonsense they are fed by the companies selling these products.

I don't see anyone moaning just trying to inform people that a 40" 4K TV is as useful as a chocolate teapot as you will never see the difference, if you say you can then there is no hope, now that is funny.

quad HD isn't 4K FYI

and the PPI matters more when you're looking at a screen that's closer to your face. This should be obvious, but I'll say it anyway: your eyes can see better and discriminate better between points that are closer to you than far away. There are diminishing returns, sure, but 2K phones do look better at 1-1.5" than 1080P, 720P, etc.
Does this do 60Hz on HDMI input?

and just to add from the worlds leading TV geek

There is a widespread misunderstanding of exactly what constitutes an … There is a widespread misunderstanding of exactly what constitutes an Apple "Retina Display" - or any display that has an equivalent visual sharpness. While the first Retina Display on the iPhone 4 has 326 Pixels Per Inch PPI, all Retina Displays don't need 326 PPI because the eye's resolution is not based on linear Pixels Per Inch, but rather on angular resolution, so visual acuity depends on the viewing distance. That is why you take a standard vision test at 20 feet and aren't allowed to walk right up to the chart and read the smallest letters on the bottom line - visual acuity depends on the viewing distance.Apple's Retina Display definition is equivalent to standard 20/20 Vision - your eyes won't be able to resolve the individual pixels on the display provided you don't look at the screen from too close a viewing distance. If you have 20/20 Vision and view the iPhone 4 from 10.5 inches or more its display will appear "perfectly" sharp to your eyes - meaning the display appears at the visual acuity limit of your eyes. If the display were any sharper with a higher PPI or higher pixel resolution your eyes wouldn't be able to see the difference. That is what "Retina Display" means..

Dr. Soneira's background covers a wide spectrum of internationally … Dr. Soneira's background covers a wide spectrum of internationally recognized leading edge research in electronics, optics, applied mathematics, theoretical and experimental physics. For example: he has designed color television broadcast equipment for the CBS Television Network, built a computer mathematical model of a television system for optimizing the camera to receiver performance and accuracy of the optics and electronics for CBS, a leader of a team at Bell Labs Research that built intelligent autonomous mobile robots, designed an all-electronic 360 degree viewing angle imaging laser range finder using the parallax principle, did the mathematical foundation of the fine guidance system for the Hubble Space Telescope, built the accepted standard model of the Milky Way Galaxy (which is named after him), built theoretical high redshift cosmological and stellar models for the Hubble Space Telescope, has done fundamental work on the analysis of clustering and super-clustering of galaxies, plus work in Relativity and nuclear physics.

And it applies to ALL screens not just Apple....I'd rather take his word than a Currys salesman / AV Review / Anon Forum Post, etc.... wouldn't you! If anyone disagrees then please email him and let us know how it goes....

Would you mind sharing this staff code with us Wookiemann?
ok, when full HD came up everyone was like "woooow i can see the hair in that guy's nose..." now with 4K TV, the hair in that's guy nose can still be seen and that's about it... you can't see his DNA or anything... especially for an 40" display,,,

Proper mugs on this post. Just buy it as a entry level 4k which is what it is!!! if on a budget or after a quality HDtv for around 300 this is ideal or an LG as both brands pee on any other make.Ignore anyone talking about sizes as its misleading and misses the point that this is a great deal.
