The Samsung Chromebook is a web-only device offering you near instant access to great online content at the press of a button. You’ll experience a faster, simpler and safer web experience than everyday laptops. It also features a huge battery life, cloud storage and 3G to keep you connected just about anywhere.
Key benefits:
Your Chromebook will boot-up in seconds and resume instantly, with your favourite websites loading quickly and running smoothly. It even gives full support for the latest web standards and Adobe Flash. In fact, Chromebooks get faster over time as updates are released.
As your Chromebook boots up, it’ll quickly connect to your chosen wireless network so that you're on the web right from the start.
8 hours battery life will ensure you’ll spend less time tied to your power socket, and more time enjoying surfing the web in comfort.
Your apps, documents, and settings are stored safely in the cloud. So even if you lose your computer, you can just log in to another Chromebook and get right back to work.
A 1.7GHz Exynos 5250 processor will ensure that you’ll be able to surf your websites without lag.
A bright 720p screen will highlight the finest of details when catching up with on-demand services such as BBC iPlayer or catching up with your friends photos on Facebook.
Every Chromebook runs millions of web apps, from games to spreadsheets to photo editors. Thanks to the power of HTML5, many apps keep working even in those rare moments when you're not connected.
You can easily share your Chromebook with family and friends too, individually being able to log in and experience all of their own Chrome settings, apps, and extensions, or use Guest Mode to browse privately. Either way, no one else using your Chromebook will have access to your email and personal data.
Your Chromebook gets better and better over time, unlike a traditional PC. When you turn it on, it updates itself automatically. This’ll mean all of your apps stay up-to-date, and you get the latest and greatest version of the operating system without having to think about it. No more annoying update prompts included!
Chromebooks run an operating system designed from the ground up to defend against the ongoing threat of malware and viruses. They employ the principle of ‘defence in depth’ to provide multiple layers of protection, including sandboxing, data encryption, and verified boot.

Might be nice hardware and all that but for 299 bones you could get a laptop which runs software on it, not just a browser.

When that software is windows 8 though, its not worth any bones at all cm

Have to agree, have one of these, very fast machine, but very very limited in terms of what you can do with them. They're only good for browsing, youtube and Netflix. Even using word document editing on these is a nightmare. The nail in the coffin for me, was when I realised how difficult it was to download torrents, something android tablets do flawlessly.

Such a comprehensive deal title yet it's missing a little detail.

The price (_;)

Surely after the cashback and selling the phone for £50 this is still a cracking deal for a 3g Samsung Chromebook at £199....if you're after one?

I view HUKD in "text only" mode, as per the screenie I posted.

No price shows if the poster ignores the posting rules and omits it from the title.

Is this a good deal? Seems surprisingly expensive to me

Trolling over here as well as the SIM thread I see.

Nope
SIM card from Globalgig, combined with a 12 month data plan of 100MB per month. This data plan isn’t just restricted to the UK – it extends to a network of36 countries, including many in Europe,as well as the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Have you every tried a Chromebook or are you just talking from what you dream?

I want to biy my bf a laptop as a present he doesnt play games or anything and I know nothing about laptops would this be good enough for just generally internet use and why do you need to have a sim card for it can it just be used in the housr with wifi I kkow I must sound stupid but I know nothing at all about what makes a good laptop

There's got to be a good reason why they're flogging these.

Cause they're not selling. Cracking idea and honestly believe this will be the future with all software running off the cloud. Google were just too early to market with it and consumers are fearful of saying goodbye to Windows... they'll get there. If Google made the OS more like android I reckon they'd have a sure fire hit as consumers are comfortable with that already.

Unfortunately you'll only get a tenner for the phone so probably best to hold onto it for space or holiday phone. Still 250 is hot for what you're getting. Don't get why people are comparing these things to laptops though. I think of them more like a tablet with a physical keyboard and bigger screen. For a lot less than an iPad! Plus don't forget the Google drive offer which saves you buying an external hard drive saving you another 50 to 100 quid...

I've used a Chromebook. I wouldn't spend 299 bones on one.

In all honesty I don't think a chromebook replaces a laptop. The operating system has grown up and you actually get a desktop now but it is still a long way from what people using Windows would expect.

If your boyfriend has a PC already and just wants a dead handy portable device to browse the web then these are fantastic, dead quick to boot up (less than 10 seconds), decent battery life and it doesn't weigh you down.

But if he wants a proper laptop then you'll need to get a Windows device, there isn't that much to fear about Windows 8, I think some people just can't adapt to a bit of change!

Yes and share your life with good old friendly Google.

I had one of these, they are no way worth 300 sheets, I'd ratehr buy a surface rt with the money !!!

Saying that though, the keyboard on this thing is insane. I have never ever ever used a keyboard as good as the one on this machine, it is simply marvellous, so good in fact i am half tempted to buy another chromebook second hand just for the keyboard itself. People go on about macbook keyboards (i have a macbook air) they don't even come close to the feel of these badboys.

No one has mentioned how bad the screen is on this, matte / not that bright / awful viewing angles !

sorry yeah you're right, screen is a bit crap

CEX will buy the phone for £46 if it's unlocked, or £27-£40 locked depending on the network.

Presuming it's unlocked, that works out at £204 after cashback and selling the phone.

It's £293.94 @ Amazon and you can still claim the free extras through Samsung:

amazon.co.uk/Sam…P4/
Edited by moderator: "Aug 05, 2013 08:52" 5th Aug 2013

And £229 @ Currys for the WiFi only model. You can still claim the free Samsung Galaxy Mini as well:

pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml

Limitations:

No Microsoft office unless u have an office 365 sub...Google docs do not format properly when switching...I've tried it.

Very limited endnote ( the online endnote is pretty crap)

Torrents possible but massively limited.

No exes so no adobe packages etc.

I really wanted one, but after seeing the incredible amount of hassle and fiddling necessary for basic academic functionality and even entertainment functionality, decided to give it a miss. Shame.

Cracking deal for a very nice bit of kit. £300 (£200 with extras) wont buy a windows laptop worth using. Boots instantly, small and light with great battery life and can remote into other PCs in the house. No viruses in the literal sense rather then the mythical Mac sense.

What Google has done is made a cheap netbook a pleasure to use rather than a chore.

Can this be de-chromebooked & run Ubuntu etc?

What is the point in having computer security if the NSA can wander through Gmail & Google storage, so effectively your online chrome book "hard drive".

Another drawback: to print with a chromebook you need a cloud ready printer or another computer.

Remember many apps are not compatible with this particular Chromebook (ARM processor).

After all these favourable comments I'm definitely buying one NOT
