Synopsis below, basically it's a fingerprint locked case for a 2.5" SATA hard drive which are generally used for Laptops and PS3s. If you have any lying around, or if you buy a new one, you can protect sensitive data with this enclosure.

Play.com Synopsis:

The Sandberg Fingerprint Hard Disk Box is a unique way of ensuring that only you have access to your personal data and sensitive information. It is easy to fit a 2.5" SATA hard disk in the box, and the box connects to your computer via a USB cable. Using the software provided, you can decide how much of the hard disk is to be protected with fingerprint verification (partitioned). Should any unauthorised users get hold of the box, they will be unable to access your data held on this part of the hard disk. The box is also compact and handy to keep with you. Another feature is that with just a push of a button on the box you can back up selected folders and files.

Includes

1 Travel pouch

1 USB data and power splitter cable 0.5m

is the same one available for 3.5 hdd? good deal tho

Nice deal - wish I could find a use for it to impress my friends with.

great deal heat and rep added

Good price for a caddy I suppose and the Reader is a nice touch but to be honest I dont see any information to suggest that there is another way to decrypt the data than the reader. I log into windows on a fingerprint on my laptop but some days if I have washed my hands it doesnt work as well so I would want to know if I can use a password to get my files back and not rely solely on the fingerprint reader aspect. Encryption for security is all well and good until something goes wrong and you cant access the files you need.

Terrible idea. What happens if you lose the finger you need print from.

The Siemens biometric mouse I had was rubbish. I got locked out of XP Co's of it when it suddenly refused to recognise my fingerprint.

One idea is to just freeze the finger and thaw it out when you need it and then refreeze it. Good luck!

Could always clone a new one?

Could grow a new one - the way science is going.

Could always have a cast of the finger made and then fill the cast with some sort of jelly that solidifies....

Stem cells are the next big thing....

You take the hard drive out of the enclosure and stick it in a new one. (Not exactly bulletproof security then).

I think the idea is it encrypts it so you cant do that.

Manual: files.sandberg.it/sup…pdf

Why not just install ]Truecrypt for free ?

You can then use a decent caddy and don't have to worry about having fingerprint issues... all you need is to remember the password or have the decrypt keyfile

It is when the drive inside is securely partioned

Did you bother to read the OP?

i think its worth it just for the caddy!

No way to disable the fingerprint aspect of this product?

I would imagine if you didnt install the software that comes with it, it would act as a normal caddy.

If the software that came with the drive encrypted the drive and the only way to access it was via fingerprint then this could work as a security device. I doubt it does work this way though.

Isn't that exactly what it does?

Anything that makes me feel more like James Bond for less than £10 gets my vote! Heat added.

Looks like you install a password to use in the event that the finger print bit should fail so youu can retrive any data

Thanks, ordered...securtiy on this look sensible and usable, but we'll see!

though I noticed at 0.5% for electronics quidco worked out at 5p..raking it in!

I much prefer TopCashBack myself, but i put Quidco because that seems to be the only one anyone talks about here...

You are quite right, I should have checked first. I didn't check as i thought there is no way you'll get drive encryption for under a tenner. Bad assumption.

We're not that far off being able to grow a new one... although unfortunately it wouldn't grow back with the same fingerprint, it's not genetic as identical twins don't have the same prints.

I can just see the next question

"What if you forget your password?"
"What if your head falls off?"

Oh they are also out of stock now.

When they get back in stock, they are still half the price of the nearest shop:

google.co.uk/pro…g=p

These devices are much better than normal password-protected caddies or TrueCrypt as you can write in your will that when you die, you give access to someone you trust to your files and that they can use your dead corpse (which holds the key) to open the case. Doesn't work if you get burnt to death or the criminal/coroner decides to dismember you though.

Voted hot.

i like this. i'll put all my personal data on it just in case i get amnesia or something and I can use it to jog my memory...
plus pr0n obviously...hot!

Ordered thanks, just have to wait until bac k in stock now
