And it's slower than a slow thing on a slow day in Slowtown.

Yep. I heard that it's slow as well. Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced USB drive thats quick?

Cheers, rep left

Am I missing something?

Has it not ALWAYS been this price on Play? :?

On the speed issue, I know nothing about the 16GB but I have the 8GB on an I haven't had any problems at all.

This transfers for me at 11-12MB/s, which isn't that bad really. I've seen much worse. Good price though.

Can anyone get the Contour for less than £31

thanks

This is for sequential read (i.e. large files). On random access it's horrible - that's why it's NOT ReedyBoast.
I normally vote hot or not vote but for the first time I voted cold.

Posted already many times and the cheapest was £13.49, but it still probably the best price for a 16 GB USB Flash Drive, so I voted hot. I have one and I am satisfied so far, like especially the U3 function :-)

This was written on that 7dayshop website:

Thanks mikerj. Have ordered [and rep added].

Speed comparison:

Sandisk Cruzer Micro 16GB:
Read Speed: 22MB/s
Write Speed: 5.5MB/s

Dane Elec zLight 16GB
Read Speed: 33MB/s (220x)
Write Speed: 14MB/s (95x)

Vista ReadyBoost doesn't like my 8GB Sandisk Cruzer (not fast enough) - I will give the Dane Elec a try instead.

this price has been since forever has started gazilions of ages ago in infinity.

and to the guy above: i have bought one for 15.50 in november.

I brought this card from play a couple of days ago. Speed is not a huge issue for me on a USB Key but tbh not noticed the speed issue. Love the key and its design. Metal shank for the keyring aspect is also well done.

Heat from me.

Transferring 256kbs MP3s, mine achieved a write speed of 1.7MBs. I wonder if you have a different version of Cruzer (not Micro)?

I have this, it is good

Well, my 11-12MB/s is when transferring 8-12GB mkv 1080p files, so I can't comment on smaller files. It's also formatted to NTFS (obviously!), which as someone already mentioned, is likely to help with speeds.

It's a limitation of the (default) FAT32 file system. You need to format it to NTFS, which you can't do in Windows. Google "HP USB Format" & download that.

the porter;4747835

does the ps3 not read NTFS? IT FINDS the cruzer in fat but not ntfs

nope it doesnt read ntfs.

the porter;4747946

shame thanks is fat32 4gb limit?

Yes.

Not ideal but you could spit in two.

how do you split mate?

I have the Dane Elec 8GB 173x the advertised 7dayshop speed:
Quoted : read/Write Speeds:
Read: 26MB/sec (173X)
Write: 7MB/sec (46X)

My tests using 1032 MB video file

NTFS : 105 seconds write so 9.8 Mbytes/s actual
FAT32 : 113 seconds write so 9.1 Mbytes/s actual

So spend just a few quid more for the Dane Elec 16X USB stick as it is 220X read, so it will be much much faster than the Cruzer Micro 16X as I have the Sandisk Cruzer Titanium (faster than the Micro) and the Contour, faster still than the titannium. And the Cruzer micro is slowest of them all. And I have the Cruzer micro too (2gb) and the best write speed that you can hope for is less 5MB/s. An hour of time to fill 16GB with write data.

That's odd, because both of mine will write at 12MB/s and 14GB data transferred in less than 20 minutes.

I find this very odd. Yes, large files will transfer quicker but not by a factor of 10x. :?

My very brief test before selling the Micro on was to remove the U3, format to NTFS & copy 85MB of MP3s to it. This took 50 seconds (1.7MBs). I compared it with a 16GB Freecom I have & that copied the same files in 10 seconds (8.5MBs).

Given the wildly different performance figures owners appear to be experiencing, I'm beginning to wonder if there are some fakes floating about. It doesn't help that Sandisk themselves publish no performance data on their site.

Edit
Just had a trawl of Sandisk's forums. There are numerous requests for confirmation of read/write speed for the Micro, all of which have been ignored. There are reports of write speeds similar to the low speeds I found together with others reporting higher. Maybe Sandisk just chuck in whatever is cheap at the time & it's pot luck as to what you get.

I know that larger files on to NTFS should be a bit quicker, but yes - if there are folk experiencing dog slow speeds, I would wonder if they were either cheaper memory solutions on the day (not uncommon) and that's how the price has been cut?

My sticks have been verified by a friend who I send them to in order to exchange data. We were both underwhelmed by the speeds (!) but I guess it's good reason to actually be cheerful.
