Why is there a NAND shortage?

There's no shortage of Google, which will allow you to solve this puzzle.

Nice spot

£20 to go till they are back to pre-shortage prices

This NAND shortage oh balls what I mean is meh SSD prices have stagnated for years. This is a terrible price but most people have to pay it. Absolutely terrible pricing for computing components now. Hateful awful prices, almost feels like they're extracting the pish.

Don't buy me this for Christmas as I'll only go and drop kick it through the window.

And what did it say cupcake?

SSD are excellent upgrades and once you have one you wont go back.

I'm a bit wary about Sandisk SSD's..I got a 240GB and it failed in a month...got it replaced and upgraded for a 480GB from them and that failed, then got another replacement so I sold that and got a samsung with change in my pocket.

Gutted I missed this, but it expired midnight french time

Nice to see the art of community friendliness hasn't been lost on hukd!

Just to prove that not all of the people on this site are unhelpful. Take a look at this article. Basically boils down to supply and demand.

Wonder why that might be...

I was helpful I told him there's a NAND storage. Why is it my fault he can't use Google? Why do people need to be spoonfed?

Thanks to all for all the helpful info.

I got the 480GB version of this for £66.65 from ebuyer back in March 2016... That's the kind of price I'd like to see them at again!

I got one off this deal hotukdeals.com/dea…879
£40 , 2 years ago - but it just died !!
amazon offered a £39.99 refund , sandisk offered to replace . No brainer.
It is a lack of competition that is keeping prices up. Capitalism.

Sounds a bit odd? Mind, now before I transfer a torrented file to a ext HHD for storage, I run a hash check and I'm surprised how many previously 100% DL files (Bitcomet so also # checks at 100% DL) come back up as 99.8% complete.

If I said nothing he'd be none the wiser, so did him a favour to be fair

Prices are being kept artificially high. There is a long term NAND shortage which manufacturers have had ample time to expand production by now, but have little or no inclination to - as it will mean more expendature and lower selling price.

NAND flash consumption will only increase as devices demand bigger and bigger storage, they should have been prepared for this.

I agree. Fair point.

Price-wise for an SSD, not bad given the market, but the specs quoted tell you very little about actual performance. Speeds quoted are max under optimal conditions, and are probably just quoting the SATA 3 limits only the read speed will get anywhere near that.

Do bear in mind that this is the lowest spec SanDisk SSD - no DRAM cache (lower performance and endurance, can be significantly lower on write performance), and a variable bill of materials, so one batch of SSDs can have different NAND to the next, most likely TLC (some have been shown to have MLC though). The 480GB SSD Plus does at least have a DRAM cache which makes it a potentially decent budget option... assuming the price is actually 'budget'.
