I have one (almost) permanently in my car for playing music - I don't make a habit of touching it, but when I have, it hasn't been hot at all. Only take it out to load new stuff onto it and it's been fine connected to a laptop too.

Very tempting then. Mrs Albert just got a new car without a cassette deck but it does have a usb socket as a source for the new fangled entertainment console.

Could got a lot of tapes' worth of music in one of these.

A lot of drives get hot when writing lots of data. Waa Windows using it for ReadyBoost?

No idea. It was one of the older usb 2 ones though so they might have changed. Reviews seem a bit mixed on it but as storage for music in a car it shouldn't be getting that hammered.
