This'll be better than the built in on my laptop talking with my cousins in oz. Heat.

Looks good, think I'm going to get one.

Cheers OP. Have ordered. Hope it's ok.

Thanks OP. Have reserved at local store.

It only smoothers the edge but the quality is still considered to be 1.3MP

This is a cold deal to me.

Consider most laptop webcams are just about 0.3 megapixels, this is still a great deal for just over a tenner.

Wrong: it only has a 1.3 million sub-pixel sensor. That makes 0.7 million green pixel, 0.3 million red, 0.3 million blue ones.

Turning that into a full 5 MP image with 5 million sub pixels for each colour requires a great leap of faith. More to the point: it is entirely a marketing exercises. Only the best lies are good enough for our marketing...

And personally I blame Logitech for it. Nobody took it serious when cheap Chinese brandless cameras did it, you would expect that. But since Logitech is in on the lies, everybody does it.

So is it actually any good and suitable for general webcam use

Yeah, and why stop at 5MP? They could supply software to split each pixel in that 5MP image into four new ones all of the same colour, and make it 20MP. But that would not be so believable.

This looks like the Microsoft Lifecam I've got - cost £40. It's HD as well, but the trouble is the PC does all the processing and brings the PC to a near halt with 100% processor use! It's ok at lower resolutions, but the HD bit is a bit of a con unless you have some high spec machine to run it on. You'd be better off spending more for an HD cam that does its own processing, if you really need HD.

This is a good price for the cam --- but don't expect to use it for HD, or you'll probably be disappointed.

how is good this one

Get the logitech c270, much better and only £14.99

I'm after a good webcam (my daughter is moving away!), what are the recommendations? Got put off this one by the comments about the 100% processor. My PC is quite old.

If you can use an HD one, then that's definitely best. There are a few decent cheaper options (Logitech C270 / Microsoft HD-3000 / Creative Chat HD / this Sandstrom one), but to do HD video you're going to need 2GB RAM and a reasonable processor (Core 2 Duo upward).

If you have an old PC, avoid the more expensive 1080P cameras. They tend to need crazy specs to work perfectly (Quad Core, 4GB memory etc).

No they aren't. That was about 10 years ago.

OP the C310 can be had for £17 from a quick 20 second google, not to be rude but this is not "almost half the price".

Thanks very much for the info. I'm on a P4, 4GB, so yeah, an old machine. I'll have a look through those and decide. Thanks again!

Just received this one in the mail to replace my old 0.3MP webcam. The change in image quality is very impressive and for just over a tenner I think it is a good deal, plus the built-in mic is very sensitive and it is Skype HD compatible. Heat definitely added.

Works on my hackintosh. Also works on ancient G4 iBook.

anybody know how to install this on a mac mini? I've plugged it in but nothing happens.

You’ve plugged it in, and run an application that utilises a webcam* and nothing happened? Maybe yours is faulty.

*eg, iChat (which will give you the little green icon next to your own icon); skype (which will let you test it and set it up in preferences); facetime (which starts using it straight away) or Photo Booth.

Cheers. I thought plugging it in would initiate some kinda set up screen. Opened Photo booth and the camera works now.

Though there's a slight delay in the movement of the camera.. e.g not smooth ... is that just the camera speed?

I have just bought a Sandstrom SW72011 at PC World today and it is brilliant, works out of the box Windows 7 picked it up right away. Picture is almost crystal clear (although I am using one of Intels new i5 processors). Sound is very clear too. I can certainly recommend this webcam. Works well with Skype also. One of the best £20 I have spent, go get one!

I've got it and it's AMAZING!!!!! I went to PC World and bought it and it cost flippin' 20 quid
