epic deal 512mb DDR3 too bad i recently i bought a 8600GTS

Original Poster

Too bad I just bought the 256MB version of this card off ebay for almost as much too!

Any comparative reviews available of it?

Original Poster

I haven't found any but I find Tom's Hardware rakings table really useful for a quick check of relative graphics card performance:
tomshardware.com/rev…tml

I've been looking at the ATI 4830 Fanless, also saw it for around £50, but can't find it now.

Thanks for the link.

Original Poster

No probs. Let me know if you find that - I'd buy any 4830 for £50!

Do they need much power? Suggested PSU requirement?

Original Poster

I have a link for that too
tomshardware.com/rev…tml

They only have the 256Mb version on there but it's 24W with a 2D desktop and 88W fully loaded 3D, which is low. I don't know what the reccomended PSU power is but they always overegg it a lot anyway. I think this would be fine on an average system with a 350W supply but of coarse it depends what else you've got drawing power from it.

I have the 3870 and it runs fine from a 400w psu

I've got one on a 250W power supply, seems to be ok.

This is hot, and you could consider me an ATI "fanboy". (Hate that term but get called it a lot).

These are very nice cards, and with the credit crunch driving prices up this is a great deal.

If I didn't have three ATI graphics cards already I would have bought this.

That'd tempt me to get one now if it'll work on that low a PSU.

I've got through a couple of these. Bought them for £50 and sold them on shortly afterwards. It's not that powerful IMO. Currently using a 1GB 9600GT which is leauges ahead. Voted though as its a good price, although they have been this price (and less) on eBay for a while now.

I'd recommend this instead:
ebuyer.com/pro…341
Same performance and same brand, newer chip, less heat, less power, and you get free postage as well.
Not to mention that you would also avoid Scan!!!

lol how can u compare the 2 cards u mentioned lol.
its a very good card, excellent for bluray or any 1080p stuff, also uses its own power only to encode, putting no strain on the CPU,so its a win win.

min can stream 1080p to my tv and play another 108p film on my pc at same time and defo worth the money

Agree about avoiding Scan, terrible customer service and they send out 2nd hand goods which I have experienced myself.

No No No

The 4650 is a newer chip but older slower ddr2 memory, slower clock = worse

Just because they stuck a 4 on the front of the name, dont be fooled

In a custom pc review in every game tested it scores worse than the 3850, and the power consumption in gaming of the whole pc with a 3850 was 208w, and the card ~98w

Original Poster

Yeah, this 3850 is definately faster than the 4650. As for ebuyer/Scan, ebuyer have a bad reputation and I've had problems with them in the past, as have friends of mine. If you have no problems you'll be fine but if you need customer service you've got a lot of pain ahead of you.

Only just used Scan for the first time this week but I'm very impressed. The free delivery is a next day service too and my item arrived next day despite me not ordering until 3pm.

Have to disagree about your ebuyer comments. I have been a customer for well over five years and have yet to have a bad experience. Returns are always dealt with in a very prompt and professional manner.

As are any company.

However why didn't you simply get a replacement motherboard?

I love scan, and ebuyer, their customers service has always been great for me, and with Ebuyer I have returned numerous things all went perfectly.

how do i know if this is compatible with my motherboard /power supply ? i currently have an ATI RADEON 9600 GRAPHICS CARD.. with a P4 3.4 ghz processor, is it safe to order this?

That would most likely be an AGP card so this would not fit being PCIE.

Great card for this price, bought mine a while back for 100+ and its played everything that I've tried on decent settings. I have a 400watt corsair PSU from ebuyer and it runs fine with this. Never had a problem with ebuyer customer service and I've been a frequent customer for years, not ordered from Scan though so not sure what they're like but at this price.. BUY! It's a great a card =]

thanks - so a worthwhile upgrade from my 7600GT ???

Really hoping the price of the AGP version comes down sometime soon. Don't want to completely go down the upgrade path just yet.

Well just going by the rankings I would say so but it depends what you want out of it. As I mentioned this card has very similar performance to the newer 4670 which is classed as a mid-range card. Tom's hardware says that should give awesome performance in most games up to a resolution of 1600x1200.

Edit: By the way, it's on pre-order now.

Actually if you order from the Today Only page it says it is still in stock.

Yeah it's got a connector from the psu into the end of the card, not sure exactly what type but my card came with an adaptor that I made use of.
