The ATI Radeon 4890 graphics card is ATI's new single core flagship graphics card. Based on the 4870 architecture this card features a new GPU and much faster GDDR5 memory. Clocking in at 850MHz core speed and 3900MHz out of the box this card is anywhere between 10-15% faster than the previous 4870 graphics card. In our own testing we found these cards to perform extremely well but things start to get really exciting when you use the supplied ATI Overdrive utility within the catalyst drivers. Early rumous have seen cards reaching insane speeds as high as 1000MHz core and 4800MHz memory. In our own testing we found the cards remained stable upto 990MHz core and 4600MHz memory which results in nearly 30% performance improvement over the 4870 cards and performance was incredibly close and sometimes matching GTX 285 performance levels. Now Novatech does not guarantee that these cards will overclock the same for everyone but it seems safe to say cards should happily run at 950MHz core area and 4400MHz memory. Needless to say ATI have a winner on their hands with the 4890 graphics cards.

How does one of these compare to a Nvidia 8800 GTX 768MB ? Would it be upgrading or downgrading?

Upgrading as the slower HD 4870 is faster - VGA chart.

Mate this card will be blow your socks off compared to a 8800 GTX

o you think I could try it and return it the next day if I didnt like it. Never bought and returned a graphics card before and don't think I have bought something from Novatech before either

man 2 months and dx11 are likely to be here... to wait or not to wait

Make sure your PSU is up-to-scratch. I think these require 2x dedicated 6pin PCI-E connectors.

You do, but according to the picture at the bottom of this review you get a couple of molex converters in the box....

I only have a Enermax 600 Watts with 2 PCI-e and might have to upgrade it too... but that's how it is with upgrading Pc's...:|

You will be waiting forever, first for dx11, then for the dx11 cards, then for whatever is coming out after that, and then after that, and then after that, etc.

Wasn't D10 not very good when it initially came out? I mean the hardware couldn't really keep up in most graphics-intensive games, or something like that?

There was almost zero games that used DX10 at the time of release and those that did showed barely noticeable in side by side DX9 vs DX10 screenshots. Of course, things improved as time went on but it was still a damp squib on launch. Whether or not game developers are going to try any harder to get ahead of the curve in time for DX11 is something that we will all have to wait and see

Thanks for that Cuddy :). Hmm, so it was game support more than anything else.

DX10 is better than DX9, its not all about the graphics(they are better) but using DX10 can increase performance in a game due to the way its processed. DX10 didnt become a great success as it was forced on just vista which was a huge step in O/S especially from xp to that and alot of people didnt like the performance differences, but with windows 7 being released before the end of this year dx10 should become more mainstream.

DX11 gpu's are coming this year and so far its suggested the performance is ALOT more, nvidia are said to be doing a cpu in gpu style and ati(AMD) are just bringing out 40nm cards with higher frequencies etc.

@The guy with the 8800GTX, dont upgrade as that card is still a beast and performs slightly better than the 9800GTX (gts 250) so keep it until the next generation cards come out as theres no point for a few FPS difference.

Great price and voted hot.

nvidia have been doing the "CPU on GPU" for a few generations now. It's why their cards aren't as competitive as ATI/AMD right now - ATI's cards are more efficient, faster and cheaper to build = better deals for consumers. nvidia's answer is to make the die size of the chip bigger to get more performance. AMD/ATI actually innovate - e.g. working on GDDR5 for the 4870 and now 4890 cards.

Note - I'm not saying nvidia don't have cards offering similar performance for the same RRP price. What I mean is that it costs ATI/AMD a lot less to do so, so nvidia's margins are being shot to pieces in order not to loose market share (see their financial releases).

Yeh its also partly due to the laziness of nvidia with rebranding the same tech. The new gpu from nvidia is going to be a proper cGPU though, brightsideofnews.com/new…spx

Will this card work with a thermaltake 550 w power supply?

Will this card work with a thermaltake 550 w power supply?

If it's a ]TR2 Power, or a 550W one from one of their better ranges, then not a problem. Don't forget to connect both the 6pin PCI-E connectors though.

Welcome to HUKD

Yes it is the TR2 one so thanks for that.

Can some knowledgeable person tell me if the card is likely to work with this pc?

They don't list the PSU and I'm worried about blowing something up!

Not a clue as to the PSU used, or the amount of space present for a graphics card of this length with a double-slot cooler as well. Can't find the length mentioned anywhere, but my guess is it's 10-11 inches.

You could contact ]PCNextDay (Zoostorm's maker) & ask, but whether they'll give you the correct info or not is anybody's guess. Also enquire whether upgrading on your own is likely to void the warranty or not.

All the best

Thank you

Hmm what difference would this be over a 4870? is it little to none?

well if you read the description it says 10- 15% better or slightly o/c 30% better

Hi, been looking to upgrade my graphics card for a little while now (i bought the medion quad core from tesco. Can anyone tell me if this psu: "OCZ OCZ500SXS-UK / StealthXStream 500W ATX Power Supply Unit / PSU / 120mm Fan" would do the job of powering this card? Or any recommendations otherwise?

Thanks!

Yes that PSU will be sufficient for one HD4890.

Well finally I took the plunge and went for it!! it was a hard choice but it was either this or a PS3 which was a lot more. Went for this because I know this will out perform the PS3's in graphics. I have nothing against a PS3 because it is a great piece of kit! We will see soon if I made the right choice....

From a 6800 Ultra I believe I will see massive difference... it being 8 or 9 tiers below on Toms Hardware GPU guide lol
