Also have the 6850 for £132.67 ebuyer.com/pro…431

For those that do not like to read lol, there is a good video review here - youtube.com/use…oms

Surely this is a misprice?!

Or is the 6870 not a true successor to the 5870?

The 6970 is the 5870's successor.

So....
5870 £250
6870 £180, 30% faster.

If this is going to be the price point for the 6870 I might well sell my 5870 before it becomes worthless! =|

It does seem like they've reclasified the various entry levels though:

57xx -> 68xx
58xx -> 69xx
5970 -> 6990

I had a quick look at Crysis benchmark - the 5850 just edges past - 1080 on max settings,
yea the overall performance of the 6870 just edges past - great value ;-)

Looks like its finally time to upgrade my 4890, If these cards are as fast as the speculation states Nvidia's 460 is going to drop in price like a stone tomorrow when the red camp finally let them out and let all the big forums benchmark them, as there's a no disclosure clause in place till Fridays launch so any comments about speed is not worth taking any notice of as theres no real life reviews yet, expect to see loads today.

Oh dear, just as ATI/AMD get ahead, they go and release this What were they thinking ? I'll stick with my 5870 crossfire ta

What are you on about? This is their mid range card, the new high end ones are out in a month or so.

Reading that review the HD 6870 comes in very close to the HD 5870, losing in some tests but winning in others. Neoseeker have the 6780 beating the HD 5870 and even the HD 6850 matching the HD 5870! So this card uses less power and I imagine lots of room for overclocking and for under £200, this card is very good value imo. Have pre ordered mine already lol

Why change the naming scheme

Why change the naming scheme

Yeah, crap move. But dat price.

Waiting for the 5850 to drop in price so I can crossfire.....

OCUK did some benchmarks, with a 6870 getting 7 FPS more in Unigine than a 5850, and matching an overclocked 5850 in 3DMark Vantage.

I'm just annoyed I paid £190 for my 5850 a month ago!

Yes, if the price follows, you would think it will be £150 new for a HD5850.

Let the price war begin !

CTPAHHIK

New card are slower than old ones.

Only by way of naming convention.

5850 is replaced by the 6870.
The 6850 is to sit in the middle of the 5770 and 5830.
The 6970 will be the replacement for the 5870.

Yes, it was stupid for them to rename the way they did, but the prices reflect the actual performance.

Im keeping my 4870 which runs everything i throw at it,if it runs what you play why upgrade im not a sheep.

hot price though.

Your avatar does look a little like a sheep (in body armour)

Still finding this confusing, Not sure they needed to rename.
Didnt Nvidia also do this when they went from 8800 gt to 9800gt?

Becausce the new midrange HD 5770 (HD 6870) is to powerful to be put in that range, AMD are keeping the HD 5770 as it is now they are not going to rename it. The HD 5770 will continue being produced and the HD 5850 and HD 5870 will be phased out with HD 6850 and HD 6870 replacing them. The high end replacemnets for HD 5850 and HD 5870 come out next month, but personally the HD 6870 is perfect for me will just ad another one in the future for crossfire, from the charts crossfire HD 6870 is matching the Asus Ares in performance a card that costs £900!

Quote from neoseeker "This showed in all the tests as the HD 6870 at time rivaled the performance of the HD 5870. With the exceptional performance level of both the HD 6870 and HD 6850, consumers can now enjoy high-end Cypress gaming power for a fraction of the price."

They could have named this card HD C.R.A.P and I wouldn't care this performance for this price is very good value, not sure why people are so confused/upset over its name?!

Nvidia were naughty, the rebranded the exact same card as it's own next-gen incarnation AND upped the price.

So whilst the 3/4/5 series ATI cards followed a logical flow of a x(+1)850 being the replacement for x850, their pricing also reflected this.

So whilst the 6870 doesn't beat a 5870, this is evident by the pricing structure.

it purely depends on what resolutions you are running at.. I am running 2048x1152 which a 4870 would not be able to handle modern games on high settings. Tbh, I am starting to think my single 5850 isnt enough..(maybe I just want a new shiny toy)

what would be a better gain for me do u think?getting another 5770 oc to crossfire,or 1 of these?? currently running oc 1055t with 6 gig ddr3 ram.

I'd sell the 5770 and buy the 6870.

holy **** another ATI gpu series

Same here.
My CPU is actually more of a bottleneck at the moment, & if I wanna upgrade that, then I may as well build a whole new system for i7 & end up with a spare PC.
Gotta wait for Sandy Bridge before even contemplating that

In terms of performance, according to HardOCP (a reliable source that focuses on observable performance):

6850 --faster--> 5850/6870 (6870 negligibly better, yet cheaper) --faster--> 5870
& 6850 is better than Nvidia 460 1GB

Obviously, overclocked variations muddle the water a little, but that's the gist.

Whats the power consumption on these things?

You and me both. I wasn't expecting to see this particular card beating it in tests (Guess they have made some nice improvements in DX11 tessellation).

I run most of my games close to max but often dial back the shadows a little to maintain better framerates. Never been keen on crossfiring but will wait and see what happens to the price of our beloved 5850's

even better and a lot cheaper than nvidia. now supports proper 3D amd.com/us/…spx

Yeah really impressed with this card, Can't believe they are selling them for £176.45 and it performs as good as the HD 5870. Good video here youtube.com/wat…ded!

If it was me I would sell the 5770 and buy the 6870. Most benchies show that 2 x 5770's are comparable to a single 5870. At least that way if you need to upgrade in the future you can get a 2nd 6870. Also you need to be careful with your PSU and its ability to run multiple cards.

Paid almost £300 for a 5870 last month

The 6970 is going to be a beast by the looks of it.

looks tome that ati is doing the same thing as Nvidia did with 3** series. people bought their commercia PC with cards like 315 gt thinking its better that the 285 but its not. for nvidia gaming series it jumped from 200 series to 400 series. the 300 series was used for retail PC's

I'll avoid the 6780 as not worth the upgrade. but i bet you'll seeing them in tesco/currys PCs soon
