Good price.

This really is a good price! Heat added

Cold..

There are better bikes to be had for the money, plus hydro brakes at this price are no better than a simple Hayes cable unit. (Plus the available spares.. And if your only spending peanuts on a bike I can't really see you wanting to bleed brakes etc....)

For the same money.. I would suggest the 5.3 rockrider or something similar running a 9 speed cassette , good spec'ed frame and brakes where you can buy the spares... .. decathlon.co.uk/roc…tml

Good advice all round! I never understand the fascination with hydraulic brakes...I have mechanical disc brakes (Avid BB7) and they work fantastically well. I also wouldn't buy a Saracen bike - they were once a fantastic brand, making some of the best Tange steel frames in the business. Pretty sure they were bought out by Sports Direct, and have since churned out cr*p for the masses.
A real shame.

Saracen is still a good brand and in the "game" with their premium bikes. ie on their AM or DH rig's.
However, at this lower end of the market these are just far east cheap builds.

I run hydro brakes on mine which are fantastic, but that is expected from the brand.

Nope, they did go through a rough patch but are now owned by Madison and have a great downhill team and some awesome bikes

I'm glad they haven't butchered the brand completely. Saracen & Muddy Fox used to make exceptional steel framed mountain bikes in the 90's/90's --- then they were bought out in the 00's and completely lost their way.

I had a Muddy Fox just like this one;

I still ride steel framed mtb's today (though with a front suspension fork). It's a real shame that aluminium has taken over quite so fully!

Bikeradar give it 4/5 stars snd say: Probably the best hard-riding bike we've tested at this price.

There is always going to be the less good bike at the lower end of the range hence having a range in the first place. For a 499 bike at 299 you can't go far wrong at all!! Still 499 on tredz and 519 on some other sites.

A courier ... check out retro bike for more :-)

Outrunner

complete useless though as the bikes are completely different spec..

ie the tested bike in your review has, all Shimano Deore, 10-speed 11-36T, brakes are Shimano too, fairly basic M395, Suntour Radion fork. compared to :-

Just having a read about and I half agree, but the tested bike was running Quad nanos rather than the HDC-300's.

Theres a few bikes at around this price, I think the best option is just to buy the bike with the best frame and forks, then upgrade when things bust.

One thing to remember is that the rating is based on the factor of the price of the bike only.... so compare this bike to another one say £100 more it could only rate 2 stars/ that..

I see where you are coming from on the frame and fork argument and for 299 your still going to struggle to find better even with V brakes.

On the Bikeradar rating comment .... it was reviewed at £450 this is £299 therefore at this price would score even higher would it not?

This is very good price! There is no logic in this being cold...
