Just got one from John Lewis with the 2 year warranty to try it and still prefer my Alexa particularly as it I find Google Home to be much slower and much less responsive to normal talk than Amazon's Alexa. Also disappointing to find out that Continued Conversation does not work when language is set to English UK. I will be keeping as its only advantage is the ability to link to my 7 Audio Chromecasts,

My experience is the opposite. Alexa is a pain. Doesn't understand anything we say. Amazon music unlimited is nowhere as expansive as play music. Even my child can get google to listen and obey commands. Alexa, well it seems like pot luck as to when she will listen to you. Wife hates Alexa and threatens to throw her out of the Kitchen. Response times with Alexa also seem slower than Google home. And as a family we have a very neutral accent, so god knows what sort of accent Alexa was set up for. Our close friends have also been entrenched in the Amazon system with Alexa's all over their homes. But when they saw how easy it was to use Google home, they have all made the switch. Bar the lack of Amazon shopping, they have no complaints.

I second this. I regret swapping my Echo dot with home mini. Given I have prime, echo is much more complete package. I'm not a music person. Even without music, Echo can learn many skills. One thing I use most is playing sleep sounds. With Echo, I can choose my favourite sounds with different skills. But this google home mini can't even play rain + thunderstorm. It can only play rain or thunderstorm. There are obviously more google fans in the comments. I regret listening to them.

I tried them both out before getting one. I went with the Google home.

Might be my accent but Alexa picks me up when I'm not speaking to her and doesn't pick me up when I do. I also found the home to be better at understanding context and not needing me to redo every previous sentence.

My opinion might be different if I had other smart home gadgets to work with other than just a shield. I'll probably now just buy Google compatible stuff.

Oh yes, that chestnut. You are probably saying something completely unrelated and Alexa will duck and start listening. Gives my wife the rage and my little one cannot stop laughing at that point.

Yes. Perfect dialing and quality so far. It is great because my little one can call mummy without having to use a mobile and without the worry of racking up large mobile phone bills.

Of course, if you are entrenched in the Amazon world, then there is no point buying a Home; especially if you don't have any issues with your dot. My friends who switched were having issues with Alexa's voice recognition, so when they saw the ease with which google recognised commands; they switched. And seem happier since the change.

Music is the biggest reason these get sold. I have a wide interest in non-english music. Google play interestingly has a lot of content. Amazon music unlimited is so poor in comparison. Currently in the 3 month free trial via Wuntu and I am sorely disappointed with the choice. Cannot wait to get back to play music.

Also your needs re: sleep sounds is so specific that I wouldn't have a clue about what you are going on about. Can I ask, why swap your dot for a home mini if you were so happy with it and it was playing all your sleep sounds perfectly?
Thanks great price! Gonna try to give one away as gift

Most useless Google gadget I've bought

Well done for the most useless comment of the day. Perhaps you would care to elaborate on why you think it was useless?

I use mine to play music, set an alarm for the morning, timer when I am cooking or baking. Switch on lights when walking in carrying shopping and hands full. Controls my internet settings. Helps my son search for new fun facts. Ensures that my iron is switched off when I leave the house. Controls Christmas lights - seasonal, I know. Gives me a traffic update before I leave the house for work. Broadcasts message to my home speakers. How is any of this useless exactly?

I've had google home do it too but only once so far after having it in my house for over a month. Alexa does it every time i visit either of my parents.

I'm hoping for some more combo deals to come through. I can say that Google Assistant on my Pixel 2XL is better than my Amazon Echo Dot in every way, especially when it comes to asking for music.

Do you have to have your daughter's voice registered for voice match on your account for her to be able to dial your contacts?

My son, but no. In fact my voice is the only one registered, but works equally well for son and wife. Of course there are the odd occasions, it doesnt pick up the wake word or says it cant help. But way way better than Alexa.

Thank you. That is strange as my Google Home responds to my wife's and daughter's commands pretty well apart from not dialing out and only accepts my voice for this. May be because you have not specifically registered your own voice on your account?

You are probably right. I did the initial "say hey/ok google" X 4. But haven't specifically registered my voice to the account.

I don't understand the tone. I didn't feel like havingt to elaborate then, so I did not, but can now but I'm not sure I will given how you replied. Do we have to be mean to each other?

But ok - in short it just doesn't fit my lifestyle. I don't have a connected home, when I cook I use my wrist watch, I don't listen to music on spotify - I listen to DJ mixes which tend to be hosted on mixcloud, I don't have kids, I don't drive to work I commute, also it doesn't understand my wife's strong eastern european accent. There. I'm also an android developer by trade so I should really like it, but I just don't. I bought it, used two times, now it stands there turned off. Please let's be nicer to each other next time.

Someone take the time and effort to come on here and post a great deal on a google home mini. You then rock up and call it "the most useless gadget you have bought". Now what purpose does that serve other than to demean the OP's effort? If you at least put the effort in to quantify how it didnt work for you, then it might just be useful for someone else. But to simply call it useless is just plain rude!

Perhaps if you were less mean and more supportive to members of the HUKD community, then I wouldn't have needed to vent at all. People put in effort to help others. Simply being negative serves no purpose on this site. It isnt a reviews site. It is a site for people to save money on an item they want. If you didnt like it, move on. There are hundreds of other threads that might interest you.

You're talking nonsense. I guarantee you the aim wasn't to demean the OP's effort. Don't assume the worst.
