Browsing and researching electric bikes (as per normal ) and came across this for £1200 (saving £699). Not bad for a branded ebike and it’s the cheapest I’ve seen it brand new. It’s personally not for me as I’m after a full suspension bike, however - thought I’d share!

Details extracted from their website below:

The Gtech eScent 650b Electric Mountain Bike allows you to enjoy the thrill of the ride without the struggle. Although it looks just like a normal mountain bike, as soon as you pedal you will feel the difference. The eScent has an easy to read LCD display, to tell you exactly how much charge you’ve got remaining. It has a range of up to 30 miles dependent on terrain and rider effort, and charges from flat in 3 hours. If the route starts to get tough, a built in computer smoothly adjusts the power as and when you need it.

The powerful 36V Lithium-ion battery and rear hub motor give you a boost up to 15.5mph, and you can always go faster under your own steam if you like. You can choose from two power settings at the touch of a button - Eco or Max; or turn the power off to ride it like an ordinary bike. The RockShox suspension gives you an easy, comfortable ride, while the suspension saddle makes riding over rougher ground smooth and comfortable. It is equipped with 1x10 speed Shimano Deore gear componentry to help get the bike to the maximum assisted speed and exceed it.

The Gtech Mountain eBike is equipped with 27.5” off-road tyres providing the perfect balance between good acceleration and maximum manoeuvrability. The hydraulic disc brakes give you powerful braking performance without any compromises in riding control in any weather, meaning you can safely tackle any challenge with confidence. If you thought all this would make a heavy bike, you’d be wrong. The Gtech Mountain eBike weighs in at just 19kg, so nothing will slow you down. And it’s made from lightweight aluminium alloy, the same material used in modern aircraft, so you know it’s strong enough to withstand whatever you throw at it.

Love my Gtech ebike for commuting, not this model. Got mine off the eBay outlet refurbished £545 down from £999. No way you will ever get 30 miles out of the battery though. About 15 miles is average which is the only let down
Wonder if the 15% off bikes at halford's will work on this as well
I have this bike. Love it. As for 30 miles, that's only if you leave the power on, just switch it off and go manual when you don't need it. Turn it on for the hills only.

I echo this. Love riding to work on mine and I'm not dripping with sweat when I arrive. The lack of gears on the sport bike makes it a piece of cake to ride (though you can't go much faster than 15mph no matter how hard you try).
At full price this seems a bit rubbish as the battery/range is pretty poor and also it having a rear hub motor, but for this price it isn't too bad
Edited by: "Biggunspaul" 15th Jun
Seems a really good bike but the hub motor is not ideal for off-road use but still usable and the battery capacity very small but apart from that seems excellent with some really good components on the bike. Seems to have a decent air fork and you could sell the fancy suspension seat post to put towards a dropper post if you were serious about taking it off road. The hub motor is great for getting you up the hills to start the trail but won't be great getting you up steeper hills on the trail itself without a lot of assistance from the rider if that makes sense.

However getting a really good £500 mountain bike and converting it to an e-bike is likely the better option but this as a out of the box solution is pretty good. At this price level you choose between a poor mountain bike with better e-bike parts or a better mountain bike with weaker e-bike parts, always a compromise.

A good feature of this bike is when the hub motor or battery has worn out you can get replacement parts to fit cheaply or you can strip the e-bike parts and return it to be a pretty capable normal mountain bike. So it doesn't have to be a short life product only good for a couple years or so. It doesn't seem to have any proprietary components that couldn't be replaced with compatible parts.

50 years after getting man on the moon, I should damn well think a bike with an electric motor can go 80mph.
Dont forget to use your perkbox or other scheme if you have it to buy vouchers and save a further 10% taking the price to £1080!

That’s not the unbelievable part though - you say you saw him overtaking cars on the motorway on an electric pedal cycle at above the speed limit. Yet this spectacle of law breaking on a number of levels - on the motorway- seems from a cursory search via Google to have gone unreported by anyone else at all

Agree with a step to increase their speed limit to 20mph but carp government to busy lying to do anything for the benefit of the population.

Clearly isn't, the small things like clothes flapping would look odd, pretty easy to tell it's real.

Their absolute junk at this price level with very poor mountain bike parts that aren't fit for purpose off road. Very low end suntour forks etc. This would actually be much better off road overall except the assistance up steep inclines would be inferior as you have stated. If I was spending £1200-1500 I'd get probably go for a calibre bossnut evo with a bafang mid-mount motor conversion. That way you get much better performance and much lower maintenance costs with easy access to cheap spares with Bafang.
what these videos show is the potential an electric "bike" has.
right wing, supposedly free market politicians always complain about the "nanny state" and yet at the first opportuinty enact it.
tories say "an electric pedal cycle that can climb hills? BAN IT!

Yeah, do you want a brand new eBike that costs nothing to licence, tax or insure and pennies a mile to run or a decade old motorbike that requires a licence, tax, insurance, PPE to use and can't be taken on a train, refuelled in the office. It's a tricky one.
rear hub motor, so does not use gears so will struggle up hills when most people want to use it

Only folding bikes allowed on peak time trains on my line otherwise it would be in the bag and I could ride from home to station then from Euston to St Paul's. Also u can get the super soco cux elec scooter brand new for a couple. Also super soco tc max is 4 bags new and can do 60mph with 80 mile range but might chug out as my run is 60 miles

Depends how much torque the motor has. Hub motors vary in how much torque they put out, some are poor on hills and some are good. I have both.
They call this a 'high torque motor', how true that is i dont know. I'd have to know the torque specs, but they dont list them.
Seems an ok deal to me. Not sure i could live with a small 5.5 amp/hr battery, but it does make this ebike fairly light. Decent spec on the base bicycle tho.
Heated.

I've just purchased a new e bike (turns up in a week) and that uses a mid drive Yamaha motor and has 80Nm of torque,is that any good ?

Yes, very much so. Plus crank drives have the torque going through different gears, so that makes more torque in itself over a hub drive motor.

Oh yeah, trains are a mare. Just to get 90 miles from me to Cambridge requires 3 different companies all with different regs.

60mph and 80 mile an hour range? Firstly that can't be legal and secondly what's the average speed that gives you a 60 mile range? Surely 80mph would burn that through in minutes?

That’s probably me. I customised my electric micro scooter to reach 80mph. I get a few funny looks when I pass cars on the motorway at 80mph on a scooter in shorts and a t-shirt. It can be a bit scary if there is a potholed road but the beauty is that I can just switch it to the pavement. For safety of pedestrians I then limit my speed to 60mph.

I don’t know much about e bikes but spent a few days looking a loads of them and went for one of these tredz.co.uk/.Gi…htm

I know it doesn’t have the best suspension and such like but for what we are going to use them for it will be more than good enough,i wanted something with a decent motor and after doing research the Yamahas seems to have better torque over Bosh.

My Mrs also went for the female version of the same bike, which is this one tredz.co.uk/.Li…BwE

Nice bike, you wont be disappointed with that. Battery size is good compromise between weight and capacity/range.
And personally i'd have more faith in Japanese Yamaha motor, than i would German Bosch.
