This is for anyone, like me, who didn't know you could buy this. It's insurance cover that covers you for your excess charges if you are unfortunate enough to have a prang while driving abroad.

Below is an example of the savings you can make.

I was looking for car hire for a week in Ibiza (29 Oct - 5 Nov). I found an Alfa Romeo Giulietta for £39.45.

This included:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

Theft Protection (TP)

VAT/TAX

Airport Surcharge

PLS (Premium Location Surcharge)

Third Party Cover

Road Tax

Unlimited Mileage

It did NOT include 'Excess Refund Protection' which covers you for your excess. This 'Gold' option increased the cost to £75.23

To upgrade to the all-singing and dancing 'Platinum' insurance, which further includes 'Driver's Choice - will Reimburse Fees for: Towing, Lock-Out & Damage caused to: the windows / windscreen / glass - interior - wheels and/or tyres - the roof', the cost rises again to £96.23.

This means an increase of about £52 above the cost of the basic 'inclusive' insurance.

Now the good bit

I got a quote from carhireexcess.com for Car Hire Insurance Excess cover, and to buy the equivalent cover to the 'Platinum' cover cost a measly £12.53 all-in, which includes everything that the £52 to the car hire company includes.

Thus the £96.23 total cost of the fully covered car hire now becomes £51.98.

Good, eh?

You're welcome.

I looked into something like this as well before going to Miami.
According to my booking, there would be no excess to pay or anything. i even rang up the agent i booked the car through to confirm as i diddnt believe it. The agent told me that the excess is included, and i would just need to pay a refundable deposit (HAHAHAHA sarcastic laugh - or not as it turned out!!! But thats another story)

Anyway when i got to Miami, they then told me i would need to take out a prepaid Toll wavier (for a mere $8 a day!) or face a $15 admin fee for each toll they recieved. Also, apparantly although the insurance was covered - it did not include third party cover insurance, which is required by Florida state law supposedly. So i had to pay that without any choice.
They allways have hidden charges to pay every single time.

Good apart from the fact that the hire company will block or take between 800 and 1000 euros on your credit card because you are not using their insurance. They are not interested in the fact you have your own insurance. Some of the company's take upto a week to refund your deposit. If you are on a tight budget you will have less on your credit card to use while on holiday.
I use insurance4carhire.com which costs me £39 per year for multi trips. It's a great way to save on insurance as long as you are willing to have the excess 800-1000 euros blocked or taken off your card during your holiday

I guess you have to decide whether it's worth tying some money up for a few days in order to save £50+

Moneysupermarket

The original quotes came back at just over £2 for 5 days. More thorough investigation showed that it was the fuel policy that made it so cheap - it was prepay for fuel with no refunds. Filtering 'full to full' on the left gives the proper price.
