I have just checked the Scan website is now £54.35. It's a no brainer it's still cheaper at Ebuyer.

Put a balancing bit of heat in there for you bud. Also would point out that this is the cheapest 1TB delivered drive available at the moment. For storage I would rate this as high as the Samsungs, would personally recommend Western Digital though for an extra £10 (same offer page) as they are more reliable than Samsung and Hitachi put together.

Seems like a good price for storage but you would probably want a 32MB cache drive for your os/boot drive.

I am very sorry my mistake:thumbsup:

I wouldn't use such a large drive for my boot as it is better to seperate your heavily random accessed boot from your storage anyway. A good 300-500GB drive is more than you should ever need to boot and run apps from.

I agree,id also put the extra £10 for a western digital.I bought my western digital 1tb hard drive this time last week at around £58 and it had a 5 year warrenty, ive been having a lot of bother with my buffalo external drive which has a samsung drive in it which is hooked up to my media player. The speed of copying 1gig now takes around an hour instead of the usual rate of around just over a minute so if anyone has any ideas of how i can resolve this problem please let me know but I think ill have to send it back for repair.

On the other hand my hitachi drive also seems to be beginning to do the same thats why i went for western digital ,but who knows through time this might also become faulty but at least ive got an extra 2 years on the warrenty.

The hitachi drive is still good for the price so voted hot.

Will not work in a PS3. Sky HD box maybe.

I'd be put off by the 16mb cache

I think this is a 3.5 inch drive i think you'll be after a 2.5inch sata drive similar in size to laptop hard drives.

Anyway. Now for something constructive.

I was chatting to a guy who works for a massive hard drive failure data recovery centre the other week. He literally sees hundreds of failed drives each and every week. And he confirmed to me that they certainly are still deathstars. Well, he said they aren't that much worse than any other drive, but when they go, they go big time and are usually completely unrecoverable.

For reliability he recommended Seagate Barracudas (mostly as they're easy to work on/get replacement parts for), but for overall price/performance/reliability the Samsungs are pretty much unbeatable.

16mb to 32mb Cache makes VERY VERY VERY little difference. If even actually noticable. Stop being lead by the numbers.

The numbers don't make the slightest bit of difference to me

But a 32mb cache is twice as good as a 16mb cache

......as the numbers suggest

I was thinking this! After a double failure with deathstars when they were IBM branded, I'm not so keen on this product range. Hopefully they are a bit better now, but I'm going to keep away.

very nice deal - does anyone have a link for a good external USB caddy for one of these at a good price?

Exactly. For people moaning about the cache size please post a link to a review showing the benefits of 32 v 16 MB cache.

OP is right... "don't be put off by the 16mb Cache" ...be put off by the fact it's a Hitachi instead :w00t:

It's a binary scale. Makes you infinitely more retarded than most people.

I bow beneath your supreme omnipotence

I normally look at the reviews from this site before I buy the items newegg.com/Pro…016

If the warranty is scans own warranty don’t rely on this because they always seem to con you by saying the item is working and have to pay £20 to send it back.

I Call them Hitachi Disasters.

Seriously I would stay away from them if you intend to put something important on these. It is cheap but it is a pants drive, I have two gone in 6 months and one of them made sounds like it had collapsed and collided inside. Cold for me.

If anyone's interested to see how this drive compares in terms of performance, heat generation and power consumption compared to the Samsung and Seagate rivals, clicky =on∏[2358]=on∏[2371]=on"]here.

were they the 40gb ide ones????

I had 2 of these go on me. stuck with seagate and western digital ever since without any problems.

Im waiting for the Seagate 7000.12 to come down to £50, its the best 1TB drive at the mo a 12th generation drive from segate, 2 platter unlike these 3 platters.

Amen, I've a samsung as my main harddrive and have been very impressed.

I'm interested in this 1.5TB Sumsung @ £75.98 (£75.98 with free P&P is pretty good anyhow).

1.5TB Samsung HD154UI EcoGreen F2 DT, SATA 3Gb/s, 32MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ

scan.co.uk/Pro…NCQ

This F2EG performs like a 7200RPM drive,

Although it's 5,400 RPM.

Pretty good review @ Tom's Hardware; tomshardware.com/rev…tml

It's 5,400 RPM for Power Consumption And Efficiency reasons.

Sky+ can only go to 500mb.

Sky+ HD can go to 1TB and this should work...

Sky engineer hinted at this when he replaced our duff sky+ box. Is it hard to do?? I'm used to fixing PC's but this seems a bit daunting :?

Hello, I know Im sounding geeky here, but it's not just the mb cache, but the splatter count and how they work together, I read a comprehensive review in PC Pro a few months back, the hitachi drives (regardless of the deathsatr nickname) did not fair to well,

Needless to say I paid slightly more and bought a spinpoint 1TB for a few quid more (58quis from ebuyer) . So far so good, fast, quiet and works !

Unless I'm mistaken (it does happen, occasionally) you seem to be taking the tone that you're trying to out-geek me, yet you've just completely agreed with everything that I've said?

PS splatter count. I officially loled. Do you not mean, platter?
