Have you tried the other sizes though?

I have a 29er just now, may go a size down though.

Why not??

Why not??

because the 27 and a half is supposed to be the best.

I thought 29ers were great, only had a demo but did leave me smiling! however 29ers seem to be too much for most terrains and as such the size was bought down to 27 and a half which I'm told is perfect. Personally I would not buy a 26" bike because technology has changed. I also dont think anybody with at least a bit of mtb interest would either. hence my comment

Most of the big brands, ie Giant and specialized are stopping making 29'ers as of next year so no point getting one now.

27.5 or 650B as it should be called should be a decent compromise between the two sizes.

Bargain, dont worry about a 29er unless you definitely want one, this is great spec for the price, just had a rockhopper comp 2013 29er, which had cost 750 with very poor spec on it and very heavy, also had a cube ltd pro 29er 2014, this was 1k's worth but great spec very light compared to the rockhopper, either way 2nd hand is the way to go in the bike world, im sticking with my stumpjumper 26" 2009 hardtail i built up myself.

Good price for a well specked bike. I'm 6"2 and love my 29er. But still had loads of fun on my Giant bike with 26" wheels.

So you've only had a demo on a 29er, you've never tried a 27.5/650b, yet your here preaching not to buy a bike with 26 inch wheels.
Do you even own a bike?

Exactly.

26 aggressive hardtail for me all the way. Although I see merits of the 27.5 and 29 saying the 26's are toast is just ridiculous.

This doesn't seem like anything special as far as spec goes at this price?

To be fair he's got a point, most people are going over to the 29er's, nothing wrong with buying a 26" bike but they are selling less and less now compared to the bigger wheeled bikes. My giant anthem is a 26" wheel, had it for 3 years and love it, great bike, but when i come to get a new one it'll be a 27.5

Don't get me wrong, id like a 650b but just wouldn't pay the premium for it.
26" MTBs will always have there place.

The cube has worse, chainset, derailleurs, gear shifters a fork which is not air adjustable, The wheels will be very heavy considering their 29ers and at the low end of the market, I cant really comment on the frames, but maybe the cube could have the edge but yet again will be heavier due to being a 29er. Its really horses for courses but the spec on the scott blows the cube away.

Thanks for your time tragictramp. I literally know nothing about bikes, need a half decent one for cycling to work and a bit of mild iff road. Got £600 in the cycle to work scheme, so any help appreciated!

Posted a deal a month back Here
A bit more expensive at £799 but a great bike with a decent spec. Still some in stock.

I own 2 Scott bikes, a hybrid & a road bike and can't fault them. Was browsing Westbrook because of the other bargains that have popped up on here and am in the market for an entry level Mtb and thought this looked pretty good for under £600. About £100 more from other places online ATM in limited sizes.

I'd only be using it off road, hopefully downhill and messing about so can't really see any advantage to having bigger wheels which would be good for going round Centre Parcs.

Being a Scott too I know that if it's looked after and I decide to upgrade after 6 months or a year it will hold it's value and I'd get £400 for it in a year. I also like the fact that it is 30 speed as easy to convert down to 20 which is probably enough.

If anyone can link to a similar specced or better 26" bike for the same money or less please do and I will take a look before I pull the trigger on this.

Preferably with an understated paint job like this one or a lurid one but not with one that looks as if someone has taken a paint enema and eaten a bath full of HUKD 4 for £1 baked beans! Cheers

29ers are supposed to better for taller people as well btw, and short **** struggle on them.

what platform do your employer use for cycle to work?

there cycle2work - mainly halfords based
cycleplus and a few others, this may narrow your choice of bike as certain companies only use 1 scheme only.
Ill have a quick browse see if i can find something decent then.

Not sure what platform, but Halfords don't seem to be included. Over 1800 shops to choose from tho.

Plenty of 27 & 24 speeds cheaper - on the same site actually. But after weighing up the spec & price difference I thought this was better value.

IMO you are better off going 30 speed 26" than brainfarting about 29" & other obscure Mtb wheel sizes at beginner entry level prices.

27 is plenty for anyone imo, in fact i can still get by on my 1993 rockhopper which is 21, but if 30's cheap enough as in this deal, then theirs no point in going backwards to save a minor amount on less value/quality.

Do halfords not use the bike to work scheme

Halfords do cycle2work, there are a lot of different schemes, i used to be forced into halfords scheme thru my employers chosen partner and had a limit of £500 now its a grand and can be cycle2work or cycleplus.

Apparently my platform is cyclescheme.

Can't seem to find any reviews on the Scott aspect 610, has anyone else?

I've yet to find a better hardtail than this at this price point. And it can be had on cycle scheme decathlon.co.uk/roc…tml
