Hey guys, first time poster. Think this is a pretty good price for a 5TB portable drive. I ordered from Argos so I could pick it up straight away, but it's also the same price from Amazon UK

The dimensions and weight are identical to the 4TB version so it's a no-brainer. It's also near silent which was important for me as it's sitting next to my laptop.

Wise...
Amazing, I bought one of these several years ago for about this much. Then Brexit happened.

Warning though: this is shingled media and Performance can collapse under certain types of write patterns. If you don't need the extra space, stick to the non-shingled 3tb drives.

whats the reputation of seagate nowadays? I've had two Seagates around 2012 and 2014 and they both failed after about a years usage.

I doubt there is any real reliability difference between any of the manufacturers any more.

The only thing to say is never put all your eggs in one basket....
good deal for a portable
I dont trust Seagate. In my PCs they are the manufactuer whose drives have failed the most. WD being the best.

I have only ever had two external hard drives so sample size is small. One was a Seagate from years ago and another was WD from last year. WD failed within months whereas the seagate is still going.

Yes, never have any files you wouldn't want to lose on just one drive. Have at least two, with one kept in a safe place without being touched unless you need to. Maybe invest in some cloud storage as well, if you'd trust a company with private photos.

I've only ever had one hard drive fail on me and it was an old portable that got battered around in a backpack on a daily basis so it was to be expected really. Can't remember the brand.

Currently I have an 8 year external Seagate and two 9 year old internal WDs which are all still going strong, plus a 5 year old WD NAS drive which is always on and still fine and several portable drives which are a mix of WD and Seagate. No problems with any of them either.

So basically forget the brands - just buy whatever is the best value, but make sure you back up anything important. Because any drive you buy could last the rest of your life, or fail tomorrow.
I bought two of these last year, one failed within 6 months, completely unexpectedly, never moved from its position either. If you're buying for the space, get two to be on the safe side.
Anyone else tired of backing up?

One day internet speeds will be less asymmetric and cloud storage will be a realistic option. Until then we backup...
Still not enough storage for my porn
