Not sure what smr hhd is but I’ve had this drive for over a year plugged into my Xbox one x and bought another one yesterday at this price as it’s a good drive for the space I need

Hi,can anyone tell me if this Seagate 8 TB Backup Plus Hub is the same apart from the colour as the Backup Plus is £150 on Amazon at the moment?
This seems a good price for an 8TB drive, apologies for possibly stupid question but can I just hook this up as an external drive to my PC or is this for Xbox only?

Yes, this is an SMR drive, alternative 8TB drives available of the WD Elements and WD My Book are only a few quid more and may not be SMR drives. It sounds like the Elements at least is not.
Can I use this on PS4?

Think the My Book 8TB (also on offer) are either Red or White, they are SMR models too right?

I am finding mixed information on the My Book 8TB (yes, currently on offer at £113) as to whether they are SMR or not, I think they are white label, similar to reds but some slight difference. Also I think if shucking the My Book drives you have to cut a pin or put tape over it. The Elements 8TB drives are also on offer at £115 and those are easy to shuck, no cutting of a pin or anything and everything I am reading on those seems to suggest they are not SMR, which also makes the idea that My Book drives may be SMR a little odd as the My Book is normally more expensive (though currently cheaper on Amazon offer for some unknown reason).

Yes, it’s just a normal hard drive with an Xbox branded casing. Read further down.

buy one of each: 8TB MyBook and 8TB Elements and put them in a RAID or SHR1

No you can't, the USB hub causes it to not work, PS4 only supports external hard drives plugged straight into it, not through any sort of hub. Internally, these have the USB hub first and then the hard drive wired through the hub so a PS4 will not let you use it.

Just go for one of the WD ones instead, the My Book or the Elements, only a few quid more on Amazon at the moment and both of those will work on PS4.

This one, maybe?

I am pretty sure this isn't a SMR drive, I have never had one but I have this external drive and it's as fast as any normal external hard drive when writing.large and small files.

Just checked its a st8000dm004-2cx188 inside, I use freefilesync to sync smaller drives to it and never noticed any slow down, seems as fast as any other drive I've had really, no 5 second pauses like some people report with smr. I have bought another one as only have under 600gb left so will see if this new one is as fast as my old one.

Wait till you'll full this beast up... Transfer on smr is dropping as it gets more fulfilled
Got the black unbranded one of these for my Plex server. Have no complaints and at this price I'd heartily recommend.
Only for Xbox, it works on nothing else.

It works on anything that can see 8TB drives except a PS4 basically. The limitation is if the device can only see storage plugged straight into it and won't allow it through a hub then it won't work, which is why the PS4 is a no. It works fine on Windows and Linux PC and Xbox One and should also work on anything else that can use 8TB such as a Mac if formatted correctly.

different inside - they look the same on the outside - excepting the colour...
I used the first one (Backup Plus) on my PS4 this week to back up to. All I had to do was to reformat it exFAT.

Shambles isn't it? It's like a car manufacturer offering two cars in the same range but the one higher up the range can't turn left, and not mentioning it. Anywhere. And denying that it's true even when asked.

This is the scam that will kill spinning media.

Yes they are and I think you can use them on PS4 for backup or media but it is using it as extended storage for games which won't work unless they have allowed it in a PS4 firmware update.

The Seagate SMR drives have a non-SMR cache area, which is why writing can initially be faster than for a normal non-SMR drive. But once that fills up I/O thoughput can fall through the floor.

I have an 8TB Seagate external (not this exact model), wrote a large file (~1TB) to it. After that, writing another large file caused transfer rate to drop to about 20MB/sec.

Yeh sorry about that dude. I’ve amended my response. The poor guy hasn’t been responded to for hours and thought I’d help out. It is just a hard drive and should work with any device that accepts external USB disks, blame Sony
Would this fit into a synology NAS? Cheers

Also, have a read of the Amazon reviews there’s plenty there that are using it with PS4 despite the power hub
