This is for the red one, if u search for seagate-freeagent-goflex-ultra-portable-hard-drive you will see the blue one.
Im not too good at this part sorry

can the cold voters please say where this is cheaper?

It's more expensive at amazon, play, dabs, argos, currys, pcworld, overclockers, ebuyer, bt shop, maplin, novatech, cclonline, comet. Tesco and BestBuy are charging over £100 for it.

Hot from me and welcome to HUKD jmcvs.

£44.99 for a Seagate portable

This is a great price. Especially for those with the new Freeagent GoFlex Theatre.

This drive is also a hell of a lot cheaper that the older namesake of the same giggage.

These cold voters really have no clue...

this is for the goflex model which is newer and also allows for interchangeable interfaces: USB 2, USB 3, eSATA, firewire.

the play one you have linked is just USB2

voted hot, but shame it is blue or red, would much prefer the black version. and also have only seen the interchangeable interfaces in black.

Er the goflex is just USB2 also

General Information Capacity 500GB

designed to be extremely upgradable to USB 3.0, eSATA or FireWire 800.

upgradeable but not supported out of the box.

the fact that is is upgradable is why is it more expensive

If you're willing to pay a little more for the black one. It's £4 more at Amazon.

Also, those who are comparing it with Seagate expansion series portable HDD, this one has

1) upgradable to usb 3.0/firewire (with adapters from seagate - might see something from others in future)
2) Auto backup software (not present in Seagate expansion) - might be useful for some.

I preferred Expansion because I don't like a software sitting in my system tray trying to copy over files every time I update, however, it is an extremely useful feature for someone with sensitive data.
These have never been below 49.99 - Voted Hot.

welcome to the site, you will have to ignore the cold voters on here, some people seem to have too much time on their hands and spend their days trying to rubbish deals.

gonna vote cold just because you are new JK!!!! Good find and welcome

hi there

could anyone tell me should this be able to play files if plugged into the usb slot on my blu-ray player like my 1gb memory stick ? or would it because of its size need a more powerful source ?

TIA

ir2000, it usually should. However, this largely depends on your player, brand. Try to read through their support manual, or ask their support how large USB drives they support. AFAIK, as long as it is a known file system (FAT32/NTFS) to your player, it should work.

Quite a good idea youtube.com/wat…wxc or company spin youtube.com/wat…spk

I spend a lot of my time extolling people should backup (especially when I just spent time fixing and backing up their machine) and I think these Seagates complicate this area for many who might buy externals.

Saying that, if you know what you're buying it looks handy if they keep the prices low.

Can anybody explain why this 500GB version costing £47.50 is hot and my 1TB version costing £84.99 is cold?
See here : hotukdeals.com/dea…230

It appears to not be on there anymore. But I agree its not such a hot deal, unless you want that particular model, in which case it is the cheapest about.
For example the "SEAGATE Expansion Portable Hard Drive - 500GB" is on there for £43.

Different products, ultra portable hard drives are more expensive per gig but crucially more convenient to use hence the greater interest.

only different in that they are different sizes - they are both portables

imo this is a good price. the drives are very nicely styled and its a pretty small premium over a standard usb2.
i think the interchangable docking is a total gimmick though unless you have other drives which can share the leads its just a waste of money (+15-20 iirc) over buying usb3. i guess esata/firewire may be different as i dont know much about them on portables.

on a side note you may lose these size, i know i have lost my new 3.5inch one.... in a box....!!

Daft questions like that (although someone once said there's no such thing has a daft question) are answered if you bothered to look at the post hotukdeals.com/dea…672

You can see what you get and need there.

Portable drives (2.5") do not normally require extra power but sometimes they need a bit of a boost and come with dual USB socket to 1 USB socket (ie the drive needs to USB sockets to operat).

So the answer is no and yes. For virtually everyone with a machine no older than 5 or 6 years, no -no external power should be required.

Excuse me? So you say I ask a daft question even though the original description doesn't state and neither does the link for the product and then you go on to say well yes and no to my question anyway.

Not everyone has used portable drives before, I only have desktop drives and have seen portable drives with external power so it's not as obvious a question as you make out.

The first link I provided literally shows the drive being opened and shown in full view.

There's your answer.

Don't get your knickers in a twist.

I voted hot cos this is a great price for a non-PSU HD

Thank you very much, ordered red with firewire 800. Great deal.
I have been waiting months for the right price, this hits the spot.

Looks like this has expired now, prices are £59.99

It's still a good price for this model portable hard drive at £59.99.

hotukdeals.com/dea…779

May interest some - Seagate 500GB GoFlex Black Portable Hard Drive Was £69.99 now £49.99 (using code) + 15% Quidco @ BestBuy UK

Available in silver or black for £52.99 from Play

£46.99 plus Quidco from the Bestbuy link using SEAGATE1 code at checkout

I guess with this gimmicky interchangeable connector it means you cannot use any old microUSB wire but rather you are forced to use ''premium'' Seagate connectors oO
