What is the difference between this and the other version?

What other version is there ? Do you mean the console one that connects to a TV ?

The Sound Emulation on these is awful, it's off key and too slow. All the Blaze/Firecore Sega Megadrive systems have the same flaw in emulation.

Are these actually any good?

no idea , been trying to get a mini nes at a reasonable price for ages. will give this a go in the meantime

Got some GAME credit so tempted to get this myself as loved the likes of ESWAT, Golden Axe and Shinobi back in the day (oh the memories). I'm sure if any of you have got kids too they'll get their monies worth from this.

Thanks OP. Ordered one

Are these endorsed / licensed by SEGA or they just made by some random 3rd party because trademark expired? Anyone know? Just interested in what SEGA are up to these days lol

Thing with these mini MegaDrive clone consoles is...they're all ****! The sound emulation is awful as someone mentioned and some of the games don't even run properly. Not to mention the plasticy body and stiff tacky d-pad. Literally everyone posting on here already has a system that will run a MegaDrive emulator as good but likely far better than this, whether it be on PC, android phone, tablet etc...yes, even windows phone.

Why would anyone who wasn't around "back in the day" want to play a bunch of old games with terribly poor sound? Why would anyone who WAS around "back in the day" want to play the games they remember in a far worse state? For anyone who says "it's just sound", you are obviously part of the first group...

...at £50, this is not even cheap really... I gave it heat, but then I started thinking and wrote this...

Only 30 worth playing and that's if you really like sega.

I have one of these with a built in sd card reader. Sound emulation is pony though.

How can this have all those sonic games but not the best one? Sonic 3.

its not bad sound, its wrong sounds.

Does this actually save your progress? So you can carry on from where you left off? Or do you have to start each game from the beginning every time you want to play?

The sound isn't actually crap on the original MDs. That is a poor comparison to make this overpriced crapware look good.

A PSP costs less and it's superior.

They didn't put any thought to it or quality control.

Do any of those games even need/use more than 3 buttons? A,B,C is all they needed?

Bit lazy they have not made it look more Sega Megadrive-ish. Old NES and SEGA games being from another era are usually difficult to play with a modern pad control for movement. Really needs a base up/down/left/right style Pad, or an 8 way is fine as the Megadrive original had with diagonals in between the up/down/left/right. At least the 3DS/3DS XL units have both, so I can play NES Mario games for example with the traditional up/down/left/right.
