For a split second I thought it was this one 40867198-7TC5M.jpg
Good price for this but be prepared to be disappointed by the quality, as I was. I really like the look of the Presage but quality just isn’t good enough. I ended up importing an Orient Star Classic from Japan at twice the price but am totally happy with the difference in quality, and from a Seiko owned manufacturer too.

I also liked the look of this Presage watch, this will be my first in this line, will have to see how the quality is against the price tag, online reviews were decent so pulled the trigger.

I have an eye on Orient Star too, looks solid and has some good reviews.

As you may know Orient Star is the premium brand of Orient, which in turn is owned by Seiko Epson. I like the appearance of the Presage but wanted to check the quality, so visited a local John Lewis Store to see for myself. I was appalled at how cheap the strap felt and the lack of weight to the watch itself, even for a dress watch. I can highly recommend Orient Star though, which I came across on YouTube of all places.

Yeah, I agree, to be honest I think Orient is trying to replace lower and mid tier Seiko watches with some good collection lately (though its tough to do that with amount variations Seiko has in this range). Good for consumers I suppose, especially when fashion brands with some low quality stuff (with decent design- original or not is another issue) with aggressive marketing trying to attract naive buyers in this price bracket.

Seiko straps are notoriously rubbish, even with their more expensive options

Seiko have been going this way for years. They're wanting to transition into higher end watches. Bar their divers, their midrange is getting worse and worse.

The quality of my Presage cocktail is excellent for the money. If you're paying double, you should expect to get better quality, of course.

Those Orient Stars are lovely, but don’t see poor quality when I look at this;

I like my jdm cocktail time, but the only issue I've seen with it being a proper dress watch is just the absolute chonk this has - I have thick wrists but it's much too noticeable when used with my usual sleeved shirts.

Personally I was happier paying twice as much for a much higher quality than I was buying the Presage but I appreciate value is subjective. If you’re happy with yours then that’s what matters
Beautiful watch. I thought only the GSeiko were fully made in Japan.

The cheaper ones usually say Japan movement is this range fully Japan made. This is important to me when looking at a quality watch.

Not sure about full range but this particular model is (stated on the dial). As per my understanding if it is a J model it is a made in Japan model.

I know you can get Orient Star from the UK but not the specific model I was after, which is shown in my earlier post. For those looking for a similar watch to the Presage, the Orient Bambino is a highly rated but cheaper alternative.:{

Can’t go wrong with the Bambino, pound for pound, the best value dress watch there is! They have bumped the price a little recently, but sub £100 is normally achievable.

Nice watches (Orient Bambino line) for the price point around £100 but prices have gone up by approximately by £50 since the lockdown, hopefully will come down in couple of months time. But, considering the stat of economy we will be in by the time not sure how is that going to work (not just ability to afford £50 extra but in general).

Not Just Orients, seiko 5s have rocketed in price as well
I spend a lot of time looking on amazon warehouse to see if there are any bargains.

I expect the value of sterling doesn’t help. The irony is that the expectation is that there will be some big reductions on the luxury brands, but the opposite seems to be happening at the lower/medium end.

I’ve seen you post this story a few times now. I recently bought the SSA343J1 and I struggle to agree with your Presage review. Maybe the power reserve versions have a nicer feel to them than the regular versions? Anyone know?

So you think the strap is of decent quality? I’m not the only one with the view that it isn’t. As far as the weight is concerned I was just expecting it to be more than it was. Perhaps I would have been happier with the steel bracelet version but I prefer the look of the leather strap version. I’m still a fan of the way the Presage looks but not how it feels.

Nothing wrong with the strap, if you like patent leather. I’ll be switching it out though. What, £20-£40? In regards to the weight of the actual time-piece, I think you must have much higher standards than us mere Seiko mortals. I mean, the fact that you were happier paying twice as much for a different watch...
