I believe (at least with our bedroom Sharp TV) they are all manufactured by UMC for Sharp. And confirmed by looking at the online product manual for this tv it is indeed UMC Poland.

Nothing to do with Sharp. Only in name. Just another cheap large panel rebadged.
I have an original Sharp 26" in the bedroom. From 2007 it weighs a ton and it's made in Japan. Still working fine. 😁

I’d actually like a TV with no smart features whatsoever

That is somewhat unfair linking to an article from 2012. This TV is Aquos Net + NOT Aquos Net.

I cannot say that Sharp Aquos Net+ is brilliant, certainly nowhere near the level of apps and support that LG WebOS has. But it does cover the basics well, BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, Demand5, UKTV Play, FreeviewPlay and Netflix are all supported, it lacks in Amazon Prime Video support, that to me (at least for a bedroom tv) is its only downside, but all depends what you want.

Personally can only vouch for a 1080P Aquos Net+ panel we have bought on Black Friday from Tesco with Harman Kardon sound...would personally take UMC builds over Vestel any day. Cannot say I would personally have this TV for a lounge TV, but for anyone that is not interested in having a soundbar or has a need for Amazon Prime for a budget large sized tv it would be worthy of consideration.

These are not “real” Sharp though ,it’s just Sharp brand “rented” on a cheap panel by Chinese company UMC.
meaning Sharp has nothing to do with making this TV at all.
it’s just a re-badge.

I’m sure hisense bought sharp last year??
I'm no home cinema buff, but bought its 40" "little brother". Overall it's a fine tv - it's crashed twice in the months I've owned it, and I had to turn it off at the mains to solve. Also, the sound is naff at low volumes - no bass whatsoever, but. . . . that being said, picture quality seems decent, it's got good connectivity, and some nice features (like being able to rename the inputs, e.g. rename "HDMI 1" to "Sky box" etc).

UMC (who are actually Slovakian with a factory in Poland) is actually owned by Sharp now and Sharp is owned by Taiwanese company Foxconn who make a lot of electronics including Apple phones.

These are not the best Sharp TVs like the ones sold in Japan though, though most of the panels are made by Sharp, it's the software and other components that may be a problem (you do hear about them turning themselves off randomly). 5 year guarantee and 90 day return from Costco mitigates this somewhat though.

I was put off them by the lack of customisation options in the menu and also that the Toshiba TV sets (which are made by Vestel) seem to get better reviews and they're only a bit more expensive.

Sharp TVs in the USA are made by Hisense, not the European ones.
This wikipedia article will correct some of the mistruths in this thread regarding the European situation with Sharp.

Vestel have a licence for Sharp badged white goods. Sharp is now a major shareholder in UMC that manufacture the TVs which the design and development of TVs are supported by Sharp.

If anyone also takes a look at the instruction manuals for UMC TVs they will also notice that current crop of 4K TVs by UMC are Sharp badged only. Historically UMC have not made TVs badged Techknica, Blaupunkt etc for a few years.

Taken from Wiki

'In 2007 Sharp opened a LCD manufacturing plant in Poland. The plant initially manufactured LCD modules using LCD panels imported from Sharp Japan.

In September 2014, Sharp announced that Slovakian electronics company UMC (Universal Media Corporation /Slovakia/ s.r.o.) was acquiring an exclusive brand licence from Sharp and its European television and audio business UMC will also acquire Sharp’s Polish factory. As part of the deal, Sharp will support the design and development of televisions sold by UMC under the Sharp brand.

The same month, Sharp also announced a tie-up with Vestel in Europe for white goods. Vestel will sell Sharp-branded white goods (except air conditioners), such as refrigerators and microwave ovens manufactured by Sharp in Thailand and China. Sharp will also license its brand name to Vestel for volume home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and ovens. Sharp’s remaining European business will then focus on the business-to-business sector including multi-function printers and energy solutions.

In 2017 Sharp acquired a majority (56.7%) shareholding in Skytec UMC, which included the UMC Poland factory.'
