That time of year again to service the car. At less than £3 per litre for branded fully synthetic oil it's a great price. It's 'low SAPs' for people that need that.

Shell HX8 ECT 5w40 5l Fully Synthetic oil.

Use code: OIL25

  • API SN
  • ACEA C3
  • MB-Approval 229.31, 229.51
  • BMW LL-04
  • GM Dexos2
  • Renault RN 0700, 0710

Don't forget Quidco for an extra 35p!

Thnaks @GAVINLEWISHUKD , very good price
great price thanks
Will the ECT have any effect if your car doesn't need it? Usually get the normal Shell 5W 30 and had no issues in a Yaris, would this be OK?
Heat for the price but very poor customer service

It's just Shell's name for the cleaning additives package. It's the same cleaning package as used in their 'ultra' oils. The only difference is the base oil in this is made from crude oil and the ultra from gas.
I will be using it in a Toyota engine.

If your car is meant to run on 5W30 then that is what you should be using.

Err, no. You should only use this if your car is meant to run on 5W40

Haha, of course. Just no idea really what ECT is and how it affects the oil but by the sound of it, it's all the same with slightly different cleaning methods

Well the Tesco deal was £22.49 for 4l. So twice the price per litre. For the same sort of money using the 25% off code you can get Mobil 1 0w40 5l (£28.35) if you want the best oil.

I think you misread the comment I was replying to
I'm so tempted to get some. I have about 24 litres from previous deals I need to use up first
Have a read of your handbook. Some engines have a wide range of oil specs. My Honda can take from 0w30 up to 5w40. In my experience so long as its fully synthetic there's very little difference in my engine. Don't notice improving mpg if a lower viscosity oil is used.

These things have a lifespan, same with tyres which most people don't know so having it in your shed for 10 years will be no good for it.

Depends on climate and engine miles, may not be a good idea to use 0w30 in an engine that's done >100,000 miles due to leaks around seals etc.

after a quick search on the internet I feel safe using oil that has been stored for a few years!

Does motor oil expire? If not, how long does motor oil generally last?

Valvoline motor oils do not have documented expiration dates. When stored under optimal conditions, the product remains stable for an extended period of time. It can be used as long as the American Petroleum Institute (API) rating on the label continues to meet or exceed the requirements listed in your car’s owner's manual. If the rating is still current, we advise you shake the container before use to blend any additives that may have settled.
For most petrols even if they say to run 5w30 then you can put 5w40 in. Been doing so for years without problems. Makes the engine noise a little quieter & less need to top-up.

From what I read the main reason for price differences in engine oil is due to whether it was made from refining crude oil or from natural gas with the latter being more expensive/better quality. Problem is it's not easy to find out which oil range is made from natural gas. Shell Ultra seems to be one of them.

Because most manufacturers make it up as they go along! Most have just changed their requirements to lower Co2 output by using a lighter oil.
Example. Gen 1 Toyota Aygo.
Year 05-09 10w40 semi-synthetic
Year 09-12 5w30 synthetic
Year 12-14 0w20 synthetic
Its exactly the same engine. They just used thinner oil and a changed the gearbox ratio. They didn't even bother to fix a known issue with it.
Good luck ordering from this firm. Just had a complete nightmare with wrong part delivered, missing parts. Customer service nightmare to contact. Lies by customer services saying they'd sorted things.

Anyone know any good deal on C4 oil RN 0720

They have the Shell ultra AR-L 5l on at £26.98 after discount (not in stock so probably a few days extra). Or try the Renault dealer for the a price as C4 is not widely used. If not using extended oil changes I can't see the reason why you couldn't use C1 rated oil (same ultra low SAPs). But if the car is still in warranty then speak to the dealer first.
Great price but in February I ordered some screen wash from these people and I'm still haven't received it.
Delivery issues with this supplier, I have waited months for items to arrive but they always have arrived eventually.

Ironically they requested me by email to leave feedback long before the item has arrived.

I have come to the conclusion, either live with it or go elsewhere.
ordered..my honda civic 1.7ctdi takes this....

No, it still hasn't been despatched. I received a standard email from them to say it's with their suppliers and it'll be a 2-3 week delivery time.

HX8 oil is group III base stock the same as Castrol Edge. The HX7 range is blended semi synthetic.
Although this oil doesn't state it's VW compatible, does anyone think that it would be ok to use on a MK5 Golf 1.6FSI (which has a timing chain rather than belt)? I know that 5W/40 grade is fine to use but not sure if this oil would be OK on the next oil change...

For a petrol on 10,000 mile service I would have no issue using this.

That's only a 4l can. I have no doubt in my mind that the shell oil will meet VW502.00. It just hasn't been tested.
I used the VW speck shell oil in my 2.0 TDI cr engine in my Seat a few oil changes ago (which was a fair bit more expensive than the non 507 rated Shell oil). I noticed a significant oil consumption increase Vs the Castrol edge which I had used since new. I went back to using Castrol edge and noticed no oil loss (the engine is currently at 73K and purs like new despite regularly being thrashed).
I can only conclude that Edge is the best oil out there for VAG cars and Shell helix suffers high evaporation losses. This is a great price though for fully synthetic oil.

Interesting observations. Would be interesting (maybe not for you!) If you bought this oil to see if this crude based oil sufferes from the same problem as the gas based 'ultra' in your car.
Will probably get this oil to use in the 16 year old Volvo V70 d5 that I just got gifted from my late mum. It's ran the last 130K miles (153K on the clock now) on 15w50 tractor oil rather than the 0w30 fully synthetic it should be running. I am actually scared to put a really good oil in it now in case it breaks it LOL, but at least the tractor oil will have had a decent detergent pack in it.
Just goes to show how good modern engines are, and that even an infrequently changed dino oil has been able to (somewhat) work within the confines of a modern engine design using tight clearances.
I've no doubt the engine will outlast the body but it does sound like a bag of rattly bones when cold.
I couldn't possibly drunk this all in on go regardless of the the ratio..
