I'm really tempted by this as it's a great price for what you get- is this series a good way of getting into Sherlock Holmes?

Thanks OP

The best sherlock holmes in my opinion. Been after this for ages, well worth it at this price.

Thanks.

Jeremy Brett was fantastic as the indomitable Holmes. This show is up there with The Professionals and The Sweeny in respect of 'back when ITV used to make great TV.'

Although repeats have been (and are being) shown on ITV-3 the DVDs are complete and uncut plus no annoying adverts every 10 minutes, and of course you can watch whichever episode you want instead of ITV-3's choices.

Hot from me.

Have to agree Brett was by far the best Holmes - HOT !

From the episodes I have seen, they seem to be very faithful to the books, even down to a lot of the dialogue.

Jeremy Brett was THE definitive Sherlock Holmes. If you can't get into Sherlock Holmes after watching this, then you never will. Excellent series, excellent deal.

Voted Hot.

Sainsbury's had this before Christmas at £25, then I noticed they had it down to £23. May be worth checking in case they reduce further.

Basil Rathbone was great in the old films, but Jeremy Brett was just born for the part too. Bit like Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. There are just some actors who were made for the character and he is one of those. I have seen these so many times and they are on freeview constantly...but boy I am so tempted. Bargain at £20.

I much prefer to read the books before I start with any films/series but it you are the other way round then yeah go for this, brilliant. The book people do the collection for 8.99

For anyone with a Kindle e-reader-thingy, amazon will send you The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (12 stories) for free.

P.S. You can also get it for free using Kindle For PC (or Mac, iPhone etc.) program on amazon so you don't actually have to buy a Kindle.

Most excellent price for so many DVDs. Jeremy Brett was one of the finest actors of his time but was never appreciated and mainly appeared in TV from the 1950's up to his death in mid 90's. Old man Broccoli was foolish to take away the Bond role from him after audition and give it to Lazenby. He became a manic depressive and hospitalised often late in life during the later filmings. I believe his later series and totally consuming himself into the role was to capture his talent for ever that way as well as a form of suicide. As for Conan Doyle's Sherlock, it is one of the earliest of detective genre to whom Christie Hammet & Chandler owe much and IMHO still the best and undervalued. Apparently Doyle based it partly on one of his Scottish teachers. His method of fine observation and eliminatory deduction has personally got me out of a few jams. The recent few modern Sherlock episodes made by BBC were so well received unexpectedly both publicly and critically that they are currently making more episodes with many worldwide queuing up to buy. I suspect it is the same production company that made the recent Doctor Whos. They were done not bad at all and the new duo are adequate. They will be shown later this year. However forget Basil and the rest, Brett 'was' Sherlock.
