I know you can buy a whole bike from Tescos for the same amount and that this will only appeal to a few but as a deal, looking at other on-line stores, I though this was great value for a 175mm chainset.

Clearly a great price and a well researched post. H&R added.

P.S. It's worth following the link to read a genius evaluation of three gears versus one!

Not a bad price but wiggle are doing a Newer and better Shimano Ultegra SL FC6604 Triple Chainset for just £67 and you can get a £10 discount off a £50 and above spend.

Well researched and I voted hot for the deal

But, think carefully when considering a triple. I bough't a compact and after 6 months wish I had gone for a double (53/39). I guess it depends where you live, hills etc. Compact got me up the Long Mynd so don't know what you would need the triple for...

+1

Recently, my car has been written off, so I have turned towards my trusty mountain bike only to encounter a bit of chain suck coming from my chain set. I only use the bike for commuting as opposed to serious off roading so I might go for this.

Yes, the Ultegra SL at Wiggle is the bargain of the year so far. Well, in chainsets anyway!

A triple on a Road bike. Call the fashion police! Your nicked!
But seriously a great bargain if it's hilly around your way. The Ultegra is probably even more of a bargain.

Don't think this will fit your MTB? Road bike only if I'm not mistaken.

Even better deal if you're after a double - chainreactioncycles.com/Mod…647

:whistling:

I always fancied trying 185 arms - for a bit extra torque - but you never seem to see them now.

I dropped the cog on my nexus gears from a 21 to a 16 which is the minimum its meant to take - and with slicks my hybrid would suddenly be reaching 30mph on mild slopes without even feeling like it was being pushed.

I would up the single speed crank (although its a standard - but only using one ring and the outer ring is a guard/bash plate) from a 42 to 46 if the outer guard ring would still cover the chain.

It will fit an MTB no problem. Probably over geared though, even for an urban mtb. My town runabout has a 44t single front chainring and a normal 11-34t casette which works well.

It may "fit" on a mountain bike, the shifter is unlikely to work though - mtb shifters usually max out at 44T

Good price, shame I have 9 speed on my racer as could do with new chainset.

How do you work out what size crank is best for you? Somehow I don't think it's straight forward and I already have one dodgy knee.

I need a new chainset as my current beast has a 50t single (yep I'm hardcore!)
I must be one of the only people using an ISIS bottom bracket, anyone care to enlighten me as to whether it's worth swapping it out while changing the chainset

You may need to if your BB isn't compatible with the chainset or you may need a set of these

The gear shifters may need changing to a 10 speed as the indexing won't be set up for 10 gears.

The chain might need changing to....some chains can take 9 or 10 speed, but a decent chain will be a dedicated 10 speed chain, like this one, that is from the same range as this deal.... Shimano 105 Chain 10 Speed 5600 From £17.99

You may even need to upgrade the cassette to one of these... Shimano 105 Cassette 10 Speed 5600 From £33.99

And for anyone who was interested in the Shimano Ultegra SL FC6604 Triple Chainset for just £67 and you can get a £10 discount off a £50 and above spend.

I think this is a good suggestion, but you can get a set of slightly higher grade BB cups from Chain Reaction and save £3.00.

As I understand it they are compatible.

Sheldon Brown's site is regarded as the ultimate authority on such things and it states 'All Hollowtech II cranks work with all Hollowtech II bearing units'.

]http//ww…tml

In fact I think this may not be true for the very latest Shimano Dura Ace Cranksets, but I'm sure that a 105 crankset is compatible with Ultegra Cups.

I second that a triple on a road bike will only get you laughed at!!!

Joking aside, it's a top deal and ChainReaction is always worth keeping an eye on as they always have some serious bargains - espcially the flood stuff - at one point they were doing a pair of Sidi road shoes for £39 and the RRP was £269! Not a mark on them :-)

It's funny until someone with a triple overtakes you ( even with all that extra weight!)
Triples are great for a do it all training bike. Taking my triple to the alps this year..
