What? £290 for some gears.... Cycling got really expensive in recent years... 20 years ago a good mountain or racing bike cost £100+
Times have changed with cycling now, the more you do it the more expensive it gets.
You can still get a bike for £100 but it's not going to be very good.

20 years ago mountain biking was getting popular (proper mountain biking, not just using it to pop to the shops) and it was quite easy to spend £1000 on a bike. Even easier now!
This group set hit the uk shelfs at the wrong time with the crash in uk sterling, the XT m8000 released a year earlier is far better value imho,
Wiggle was selling the same with both brakes, no bottom bracket for £309 last week, it's now £370.
But the brakes are superb and the last offer I've seen on them was £115 each front or rear brake, I paid £120 for the set a year ago

true mountain bikes were available 20 years ago for £100 and still are today but they have never been good bikes. A decent frame with a good group set has always been a lot more than that. I bought a lowish range GT back in 1991 and that was £250.

Back then a groupset really did mean a groupset e.g. included brakes, pedals, cables, headset, hubs etc. There was even a Deore XT seat post once upon a time.

Entry level mountain bikes that were worth a damn started around £300 - and that's still roughly the case although you get a bit more for your money now. It is the middle range that seems to have increased to around £1000 (probably due to cycle to work tax breaks, inflation and currency) while the top end pricing is now limited only by the sky.

I am genuinely shocked by the pricing of some aftermarket stuff now e.g. £200+ for a set of cogs. But if people want to pay it - fair play to them.

£234.99 from Chain Reaction
Doesn't include the bottom bracket but that won't run you £50+

Pray tell us all of others things which were cheaper in the past.........I hear houses and cars were cheaper, do you know of other goods on which we would have saved money, if you know of a way to get to this past you speak of then let us all know. I plan on buying all the things I will need in the future right now, that way I'll never be caught again in this infernal pricing trap.
