I was thinking of either getting a laptop, or down grading my current desktop pc.
I suppose I could put my memory and cpu into this.
What would I do about my 7.1 sound, the Video capture cards etc, and all the other PCI cards I have. - Maybe a rethink is in order.
It would look good next to the tv though.
Ive always wanted a shuttle, but I think I want to put too many thing s in there, meaning I end up with a bigger case. lol

I thought of doing the same thing, but needed an MATX mobo for my PCI cards, so opted for a Lian Li V351B Case - looks very good in a media setup.

any recommendation for the mobo? where'd u get he case from?

I got my case from Scan - scan.co.uk/pro…PSU

I put it together with a M4a88TD-M motherboard and an AMD X3 400e.

I have a PCI-e USB3 card and a compro S350 PCI card in it at the moment. I am adding a Compro S800F PCI-e card at christmas.

this is a barebones sone comes with a mainboard already in it does it not?

This does yes (case, PSU and motherboard), but we were discussing options for something slightly bigger.

Comes with an ITX Intel Skt 775 motherboard fitted. Personally I would be tempted to buy a separate ITX or MATX board and case combo to get an i3 or better based system, but this is a great price for a decent compact barebones.

I had a shuttle years ago, biggest pile of crap I ever bought.

It had huge cooling and overheating problems, I wrecked my CPU and ram due to excess heat inside the case, also theres not much room to do anything, this is the main reason why it overheated, plus it made a right racket when the fan speeded up to med/high (autosensing)

Better getting a Revo or something if you want something to play on your TV.

COCO

i've built 3 shuttles for family and friends and everyone is still going strong - the oldest will be at least 7 years old now.

My shuttle is brilliant. Sn41g2 from 2003/4 and still going strong, almost wish it was broken so could justify one of these.

8-/ i've used them since 2003 and will NEVER buy anything else - AMAZING machines.... extremely well built.... well designed.... runs VERY quiet and cool.

I agree I've built loads of shuttles and have found them to be very well designed/reliable.

anyone know of good prices to get the SX58J3

Great price, but I wouldn't touch ebuyer, they're terrible when it comes to customer service and last time I ordered a shuttle from them I received a DoA one that had obviously been returned to them (the box contained their returns number and it had obviously been used!) so I'm not voting either way. Shame as if it was anybody else I'd probably buy it!

Complete opposite with me, have been buying from Ebuyer for a good 5 years and never had a single problem. The two tomes I have had to do an RMA they were completed promptly and without fuss.

Using an XPC prima ,nice n quiet 2.5tb media centre ,win 7 , 3gb ram, nice bits of kit.

I've had shuttles too very quiet, and reliable!

What processor would suit this for normal use? Doesn't have to be mega powerful but not crap either. Would an HD5770 fit and if so would it be too much power draw for the PSU?
Edited by: "stonebear" 29th Nov 2010

ordered me one, for basic pc use.. internet, itunes etc oh and plants vs zombies lol
i was wondering if putting a separate graphics card in would kill the psu but the most graphic hungry game ill play is Football manager in 2d!

Good deal...not sure about the chav pattern on front though.

According to the support list here: global.shuttle.com/sup…383 , a 5770 will fit. The power supplies on Shuttles tend to be very good.

With those cards in it, does that mean you can watch and record satelite tv?
Are they just the free channels?

At the moment I have a single freesat tuner in the machine, so I get all of the freesat channels (inc both BBC HD channels and the ITV HD channel).

After christmas I will have dual freesat tuners - so can record one and watch another, and will also have the option of connecting a normal aerial to get a single Freeview tuner as well.

Will the cards allow you to capture video too. From say a camcorder, etc. or is there a firewire port on the mobo.

interesting. So is it like a humax freesat, but with more functionality. How many pci slots do m-atx boards typically have

The S350 has an S-Video in socket to allow you to capture video - not sure how it works as its not something I use, but Id assume you would need to use it with the supplied software.

Mine is basically a 1TB PVR as I had a spare 1TB harddrive I could use just for my recordings

MATX boards vary but usually you will have 4 slots (1 x PCI-e x16, and then either 2 PCI and 1 PCI-e, or 1 PCI and 2 PCI-e).

Shuttle generally are quiet providing you take care when building them. Cable management is key!

I also tend to replace the fans with Papst equivalents as they are silent in operation with no effect on cooling.

Good job mine has a light on it otherwise i wouldn't know if it was on!!

my sk41g is still going from about 2002, after replacing the psu a few years back.

i recently filled it with some spare parts from an old pc - some pc3200 ram, athlon 2600xp and nvidia 8500 (all underclocked of course) and a couple of new 80mm fans..... i really need to put linux on it though, as it runs xp like a dog these days for some reason (gfx drivers i reckon).

i wouldn't buy another though, i'd go for a laptop if i needed compactness, otherwise there are plenty of smallish tower cases that aren't tied to their motherboard/cooling/psu.

well got mine, put some ddr 1066 memory in, a 775 dual core processor. and the system doesnt post!
get a blank screen, and no noise apart from the fan (no beeps)!!
looks like its a return to ebuyer!

Any luck with your install?
I am now prob looking at a mid tower myself rather than a shuttle,
