I managed to get the Nikon D40 kit from Amazon last week when it was £207 after the £40 cashback. Since then I've been looking for the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens but its hard to get below £400. I've considered the Sigma 18-200mm with OS and HSM but the cheapest I've seen it recently is around £300 with postage. However, I have spotted Jessops doing this lens for £249.99 which can be reduced to £237.49 using the current 5% code. On top of this you can get cashback via Topcashback or Quidco. Free delivery or collect from store available. For the price I think this is a good deal and a great saving on the price of the Nikon lens.

Isn't the point of buying a Nikon to use Nikon lenses?

If youve got the nikon d40 with 18-55 kit lens you may as well get the nikon 55 - 200 vr companion lens from ebay ,factory reconditioned with 3 month waranty for £109 delivered.

Yep just get the 55-200mm VR lens. Can be had very cheap now.

Little point in buying 18-200mm lens when you already have 18-55mm lens unless you want 1 less lens to carry around. I'd recommend buying the 55-200mm VR lens as it's available quite cheaply now.

Also worth checking out is the Nikon AF 50mm F/1.8D lens- It's a prime lens so no zoom and AF mode isn't supported by D40 but it's a cinch to manual focus it. Why you need it is it is probably one of the best lenses Nikon make- a very fast lens that gives you an amazing amount DOF control. Check out the reviews and see why so many consider it an essential purchase (about £80 new)

pet2000, why? Several other manufacturers make lenses that fit NIkon's, so why wouldn't you use them if they are good lenses and cheaper? I don't understand your logic? :?

Some people don't want to be changing lenses all the time, and would be very happy with one "walkaround" lens for almost all photos. The Sigma gets good reviews, and as the OP said it's normally about £300. This has an excellent zoom range in the one lens. Also there is no VR in the standard kit lens that comes with the D40 (only the D60, which is a lot more money). Just because the D40 comes with an 18-55mm don't mean you have to keep it... So it's a hot vote from me. A good find sham63! :-D

Thats exactly my setup. Love that 55-200VR.

I got mine from Fleebay too for around £90, guy said it was brand new. When it came it clearly wasn't. When challenged, bloke gave me half my money back!! Even better bargain!

My avatar photo was taken with the 55-200 from the stand at the Clyde v Rangers game.

The 18-200mm lens is a very big and bulky lens to be carrying round for general use, it really makes a small lightweight camera a bit of a monster!
If you do want an 18-200mm lens then the Sigma is fairly competent and £237 is a good price, it can be found cheaper but only via some anonymous internet sellers.
I opted against the 18-200 lens and bought the ]Nikon 55-200mm VR lens from Amazon for £133 delivered. This complements my standard 18-55mm lens well. It is very rare that I use a zoom lens on the "hoof" . Photographing sporting events is really the only time I take the zoom.

Thanks for the support!

I posted this for anyone looking for this particular type of lens (rather than as advice for D40 owners) - I decided that I wanted a single lens on the camera as I take both landscapes and wildlife and don't know when the wildlife will pop up - usually too quickly to change a lens! Anyway, that's what I wanted and I'm very pleased with the price of the Sigma compared to the Nikon & I don't regret my purchase.

I think some people on here would vote a Rolls-Royce for a fiver cold because they prefer Bentley's!!?? It's good deal for this lens.
