Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 (constant 2.8, not the variable 2.8 - 4.5) normally costs around £350.00

There is one of these left on the amazon site, translating the Objektiv f?ikon means lens for nikon. The picture matches the title, but not the description, I've spoken to amazon and you can send it back if its not the right one. They are selling exactly the same lense for 345.99

Got quite good reviews (9.2/10). Not a true macro, tho.

Original Poster

thats true, but for the price, the equivilant nikon (17-55 2.8) is about £1,000 (ok the nikon is superior but still £900 more!). with the change you could easily buy a decent macro lens.

Original Poster

sold out now. but i got mine 2 days ago when there was one in stock, i think it comes and goes, so best to keep an eye on this page.

Is this a decent lens?

I've got a Nikon D60 and just got the standard lens that came with it. Must admit I have been looking at getting a new one to help expand the range of photo's i take.

So 2.8 means a wide aperture so it catches lots of light so good for sharp images or low light conditions?

50mm is good for portrait shots so this would be good for things like parties, weddings museums etc??

Original Poster

@ fleetingmind the zoom wont be any different to what you have with the kit lens, you'll gain the wider aperture. I would recommend the 50mm 1.8 to start with, its cheap, but make sure it works on the D60.

@ aerotec yep 2.8 is a wide aperture with lots of light, so good low light conditions and it will blow away the background to give a nice blurry background, but can be soft. 2.8 is good for indoors and lower light.
Use about 4-11 outdoors which will still give a blurry background, but shaper foreground.

Nice, but saw it a bit late

Damn wish I'd seen this sooner, will gladly buy off someone who got one for a premium.

Great Advice from Gavp to keep looking out for this as with his help managed to pick one up today.
Now just got a dilemma as had a bonus this week so ordered the Nikon 17-55 2.8 in my flush of excitement, my heart says stay with the Nikon, my head says save the money as it's huge difference.

Aye same here, got one ordered, isnt the nikon one gonna be like £1000?

yes £900 hence my head Vs heart pull. I'm going to try both out and if the Nikon can't show the uplift it'll go back.

lol, wow I wish I was in your position, let us know how get on with the lenses.

I always miss these lens deals. If anyone has bought one and changed their mind, just list it in the FS/T section and I'll take it off your hands at full price.

Good man. I've got the 24-70mm but need to squeeze a few more mm's at the wider end. Drop me a PM if/when you decide

Do let us know what you think.

I bought the Nikon 105mm Macro lens, gorgeous pics from it but couldn't justify what I paid and how much I used it so ended up selling it.

If ]this review is anything to go by then I'll be keeping the Sigma!

I quote "In all, it's a stellar performer, and significantly better by virtually all optical benchmarks than its predecessor, or, for that matter, competitors such as Nikon's comparable 17-55mm f/2.8 ($1,200, street)."

Got mine, seems like a nice lens, built well too, I also got a UV filter for it. Just one thing I noticed when I try to auto focus on something plain, like a white wall, the lens wont autofocus. I dont know itf its a fault but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

My understanding is that Auto-Focus lenses require a contrast to get a focus. It will therefore struggle on plain colours such as a white wall.

Sometimes you need to point the focus area in the viewfinder at a contrasting area that is the same distance, get a focus lock then recompose. Otherwise you will need to manually focus.

Lens arrived this morning. I can confirm that it is as described however not had a chance to test it. Off to the swiss alps tomorrow with work so may well have time to give it a test in the next couple of days :-)

Yes very true, you can get a very interesting understanding of the way the AF works and test your lens/camers for focusing ]here

I think goodgrr will be selling the sigma, as the nikon is faster.

I'd probably keep the nikon too, the only thing that would put me off would be the size i think, its bigger and heavier. but gives you an extra 6mm.

I've had the sigma for a week now, but not had a chance to really use it, and test it out, maybe tonight. Its not overly fast at focusing, but is very quiet. and the 2.8 is bright.

will let you know how i get on...

Original Poster

I am quite liking this lens, very bright and very sharp at 5.6 i've found.

still playing with it, but from what i've used it for so far it seems very good. enough for me not to want (dream of) the nikon equivilant anymore.

Yeah same here, for the money you cant go wrong, took some macro shots of the tulips and other flowers in me garden, very nice...

Hi guys, well the photos are on the card but not yet on the PC.

Thoughts so far are that I may well be sticking with the Sigma. The Nikon is much heavier and whilst the sigma didn't perform as well, the +£700 price difference certainly wasn't made up as a difference.

Main points against the Sigma are that the focus ring turns when the AF is being used which is slightly annoying if you catch your hand against it but no big thing. The AF did very occasionally struggle to lock but only when not using the central AF point and that could well have been the lack of contrast in the subject being shot.

The proof of the pudding though is in how the shots look when on a big screen and not when on the camera monitor. For me the difference could easily be made up if there's an noticable focus issue. Won't matter how light the lens is, how fast or quiet the AF is if the pictures can't be used then it's no saving at all.

I'll try and get them on a big screen today and should be able to finalise a choice over the weekend.

wow, that's a hot price for a 2.8EX, most of the Amazon reviews talk about the Canon fit, I have a Canon and would love this lens so is this for Canon or Nikon ?

Pictures uploaded and there isn't a clear winner, so my thrift insinct is going to stay with the Sigma and look for somewhere else to spend the extra cash.
