Compact telephoto zoom

The Sigma 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro offers a versatile focal range which can be used for portraiture, amateur sports, and wildlife.

You'll be able to use this Nikon fitting lens with either full-frame FX or crop-sensor DX cameras, and when used with Nikon DX cameras, you get an impressive range of 105-450 mm (35 mm equivalent).

Sharp shooting

Chromatic aberration is eliminated thanks to Sigma's Special Low Dispersion glass. The Sigma 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro delivers excellent optical quality throughout the focal range.

Flare and ghosting is common in digital cameras, but is reduced thanks an integrated multi-layer lens coasting which also improves the lens' colour balance.

Macro mode

Explore and experiment with the macro setting for getting close up to insects, plants, and interesting objects.

The macro setting enables you to shoot 1:2 half life-size photography between 200-300mm focal lengths which means you won't disturb your subjects easily.

I used one of these (canon version) on my camera for years at airshows. With me while i learnt how to use the camera properly and more importantly, I didn't spend a fortune finding out that I wasn't going to enjoy photography. Great lens for the money.

That's why I put the shock face emoticon there, at the high price that seller on Amazon is listing it for.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that this an enthusiast grade lens but for £80 it's not a bad way at all to get a zoom lens with a very long range. If someone wants to try out a lens like this or just have something to give them that range when they need it then I don't think that £80 is bad at all for a budget lens. What would you suggest instead as an alternative?

In my area I reserved one from Newcastle Northumberland Street but it's still showing as more available there, also in Kingston Park. Also showing as available in Leeds, Wakefield, Manchester Arndale, Croydon Whitgift, Purley Way, Sydenham, Brighton, Haywards Heath, Alperton, Hayes, Ballymena, Newtonabbey, etc so it's definitely out there for people.

I agree. I managed to get this lens for a lot less and learnt so much without spending a fortune.

And it was a fantastic lens.

You seem triggered by this, did you realise no matter how much you spent on a lens you never got the results you expected?

The Tamron would be a bit better as it has AF built in, but it tends to be a bit more money.

i was fully expecting someone to come along with a 4-500+ lens at which point id have joined in with a bit of laughing and pointing

difference from 79 and 100 is more than justified by better reviews and is change down the back of the sofa in the camera game

I've been searching for threads online comparing the Sigma 70-300mm to the Tamron 70-300mm and from what I've read there doesn't really seem to be that much in it between the two, except that the Sigma is a little louder in use and possibly the Tamron handles a little nicer. I've had the Sigma lens before and I thought it was a nice lens that did what I wanted it to. So by all means the Tamron could well be worth paying a little extra for (though some people would probably still turn their nose up at it), I just find it silly when someone says something like "it's crap" but without explaining why they think it is, nor providing their own examples of an alternative product.

sometimes hard to find decent reviews/comparisons where like is vs like etc
especially for dslr where is almost too much lens choice

one place i saw that had both lenses is trustedreviews, normally dont really look at that site but as it has both its handy here
trustedreviews.com/rev…cro
trustedreviews.com/rev…cro
(think these are right lenses - bit hard to compare as ALL lenses get decent scores really)

I have the APO version of this lens, costs just a little bit more. But for the money it is a pretty decent lens.

The only benefit I saw of the Tamron over the Sigma (other than user reviews) is that the Tamron has an AF motor built in, and the Sigma doesn't. But I think now the Sigma actually does have an AF motor built in?

Me neither. I've had the Tamron on my wish list for a while, and saw it as the best option for my D3400 as it has AF. If this has it as well, it'd be worth considering.

depending on the reach you need a nikon 55-200 is another option
its a known quantity though more expensive again (but around this price 2nd hand) and shorter range

Good lens for the money I think. Yes it’s not gonna get epic detail but it’s a cheap lens. Dunno y there’s hate for it. If ya don’t like cheap lenses why are ya even commenting.
