Yes it is expensive, but trust me it is worth it: I bought one on Prime Day a few months ago and have slept like a baby ever since.

Discounts go from £166 to £244 off - not too bad!

I sincerely doubt buying a mattress on line is a good idea . I think the way to do it is to go to a bed store and try out a few , then note the exact model / composition / firmness etc and then price it on line and see if the store will pricematch.

Buying a mattress is a nightmare (excuse the pun ) , so many different types/firmness/ makes etc you can't really just buy one and hope for the best . After all you will be spending about a third of your next 5-10 years on it .
Just to say this isn't expensive at all for a mattress. As my father says your either on your feet or in a bed..get decent shoes and a decent mattress

Been looking for a mattress. These any better than the mattress in a box brigade ?
Reading one of the reviews it looks like this mattress a few months ago had £300 off the retail. Obviously can’t go back in time!

This will be significantly worse than any "matress in a box", if you are referring to the memory foam ones like simba etc.

How will it be significantly worse? Please explain.

I would never buy a mattress online unless it came with a free satisfaction trial period. If you look into mattress design you will find some of high spring count one's just stack springs on top of each other just to impress with regard spring count. The higher count mattresses which don't do this often use thinner gauge wire which are less durable.
If you want a mattress which is going to last then don't get one of those topped mattresses that you can only rotate and not turn. Go for a quality pocket sprung, like Hypnos or Ikea, and buy a quality mattress topper/protector.

This is not correct.
Using thinner gauge wire does not mean springs are less durable.

Can you recommend value a mattress? I know they can cost £1,000's for a good one, but I don't have that money

Calm down you highly strung fool.

How? I don't know how. I don't design mattresses but I do know my Simba mattress is 16 months old and still works whereas previous Silentnight one's that cost me about £400 with RRP of £1000+ were only good for a bad back after a few months.

Yes I know the rolled ones costing £600 or so can't compete with a Tempur £2000 one. Who'd have thought!?
Well done op ,just joined today and found a mattress deal ?
I'm always a bit wary of deals posted by new ops in the day they join .

No such thing exists.
You either need to spend £1000+ for a proper one or get a rolled memory foam/spring hybrid.
These are only a good option if you are happy with soft mattress aren't overweight.

I cannot recommend you a mattress only you can do that.
As rogparki has said always test a mattress don't be fooled by spring count or if it has Memory foam and try not to buy a bonnell sprung mat.
Your main concern should be is it comfortable.
Remember once you have bought it you're stuck with it unless it comes with a satisfaction period.

Well we have had Hypnos Orthos wool for a couple of years and its still like new and very comfy. We got It in king size on sale for £450 with 10 year guarantee (unlike the Premier Inn range which has just 5) mynextmattress.co.uk/hyp…tml and £25 off first order I think. Otherwise a friend has had this one a couple of years also, and she says I'm welcome to try it (not taken her up on it yet) amazon.co.uk/dp/…c=1 and says it's brilliant.

Try John Ryan by Design (not sure if I am allowed to post links but a Google search comes up). I bought their cheapest bed for my daughter and it is absolutely fabulous. Bought online without trying but well worth it and impressed so much I am buying one of their better mattresses in the new year for me ( even though I'm happy with my daughter's but she's only 12) The website has some great reading and information and their customer service when I ordered was top class. Rang me straight away to find out my exact needs and requirements. I sound like I work for this place ( I don't!) but was so impressed I recommend them to all my family. They sell mattresses alone as well as beds and they also seem to have a outlet site that has some discounts.

I can't buy a bed mattress that I don't know what it feels like seems too risky
Look.at the poor reveiws on amazon. With photos. Stay well clear
I bought this mattress in august. Definitely a big step up from the memory foam I had previously which use to give me backaches. This is a medium soft mattress is slightly on the hard side, so it won't suit everyone. It will get softer over time like mine has. Don't forget to turn them over every month or so. It has excellent support and I don't have backaches anymore. I use to sink in the memory foam mattress and found it difficult to move around. This one keeps its shape quite nicely. 5 star mattress for me.
Otty, EVE, Simba, Leesa, etc all offer a 100 night sleep satisfaction money back trial. I don't think Silentnight offer this.
We are all made different (or have grown to be different ) . Young ,Old , Middleaged , Fat ,Average , Thin . Sleep on front ,back ,side I could go on .There is no such thing as one mattress suits all (whatever the cost) , Just wise up and try some out , then decide .
Just to say this isn't expensive at all for a mattress. As my father says your either on your feet or in a bed..get decent shoes and a decent mattress
I personally wouldn't purchase a silent night mattress or the likes that you find in the larger bed stores like Dreams etc. I once saw one of their mattresses opened up and what they'd put inside was shocking! Recommend finding a good local bed store selling British made mattresses from less known manufacturers that don't sell by the thousands each week. Or try a 100 day trial with one of newer start-ups.
DO NOT go to John Lewis and try one, because you will end up buying one.....or get a half price one on eBay shop soiled.

Carpet! I sleep in a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin!
Personal opinion, go for a geltex silent night. They look expensive at the moment but go to £399 (double) when on offer.
Thanks Kirkou, Great timing . King size bought after we spent all day bouncing in bed shops throughout town. They were all much of a muchness and we soon realised you wouldn't get much change from £600 for a decent one. All i could think about is your post so persuaded wife to take the plunge and buy one off the peg when we got home. Reviews are great

So you're saying you need to spend £1k+ for a 'proper' (whatever that means) mattress? If so, that's a ridiculous statement to make.

I paid £300 from IKEA for a king size mattress. We've had it for over 2 years and it's absolutely fine. No back ache here. Oh, and it came with a 90 day satisfaction guarantee and a 25 year warranty.
