Bargain! its a deal,,its a steal... pre order

The Xperia Play is an exciting new handset from SonyEricsson which combines a phone and a games console. This HSDPA phone with Gingerbread has a 4" Multitouch 854 x 480 pixel LCD screen. The Xperia's screen produces deep, rich blacks thanks to the screen being closer to the glass as well as a Bravia engine for improved video playback. The 1Ghz processor produces blistering speeds in conjunction with the 512MB of onboard ram, this is one speedy phone. The four android buttons will help you to navigate your way around the phone functions with ease. The 1500mAh battery will keep you talking and gaming for hours. The MicroSD slot supports up to 32GB which will be plenty for your music collection and videos.

Push the screen up to reveal the PlayStation DualShock-style gamepad. The layout will be very familiar to PlayStation users with all the buttons in the same place as well as two analogue stick style trackpads.

Software

The preloaded Android 2.3 Gingerbread is a very stable system with many applications available for it. The gingerbread features include a Wi-fi hotspot, new status icons, new text selection tool and a glowing visual aid when you hit the top or bottom scroll menus. The phone can also support 720p H.264 video clips, making watching HD videos easy. The Play also incorporates Sony Ericsson's new homescreen feature of pinching on the homescreen to bring all widgets onto one screen, making it easier and quicker to find what you want.

Camera

The 5MP camera takes some quality, sharp pictures with vibrant colours as well as fine macro shots. However in the dark, the lack of tap to focus means pictures may appear blurry at night.

Will someone please explain to me why the price of this phone is so low? Is there a new model coming out or something?

Probably because no one is buying. And the fact Sony Ericsson will recoup some of the money back in games sales, in theory.

It's Sony Ericsson.
It's running 2.3
It's got a 5mp camera.

Basically, it's old tech.

Possibly because game consoles are cheap for the same reason?

Low? It's twice the price of my Orange San Francisco!

Good deal for the gaming community though.

And the specification is vastly better as well. What a ridiculous comment.

I'm guessing it's because of slow sales. They probably have a ton of stock on hand and are wanting to shift it.

1) 2.3 is the current android.
2) 5mp is perfectly fine for a phone which isn't a camera phone (iphone 4)

Its a midrange price for a midrange phone, whats the problem?

Because Sony smart phones are still sub-par to anything Apple/Samsung/HTC. No manufacturers are coming close to touching those 3 big dogs.

Spending big money on sub-par smart phones is a waste of time. The San Francisco seems like a good deal however, because the price is fractional compared to an iphone/galaxy/desire etc.

Not for a couple of months at least. There are photos of an xperia play with a hdmi port, and have been for a good few months. Possibly why no ones buying the current model!

Seems a very impressive spec. for that price to me. Heat added.

As already pointed out, 2.3 is the latest build and 5MP is plenty, again here's someone who doesn't understand about cramming too many pixels into a small sensor.

Honestly this phone feels great to hold, but the slide out keypad is more than useless. PS 1 games without all the buttons and those naff analogue pads...

+ £5.95 for delivery

Far too many idiots posting.

5mp is easily enough, boasting about MP is just the usual numbnuts way to get the tards to buy junk.

2.3 version of android is the latest stable version i believe , ive been running 2.2 on my x10 mini pro and its perfect.

Whats up with Sony Ericsson ? i could say the same about Apple ( if not more ) Microsoft , LG , or any other manufacturer all to someone somewhere have issues.

The drop in price is more than likely down to slow sales more than anything also one of the main reasons is the 2year contract timeline , people arent upgradeing every 12 months as they used to.

Sony have officially said the hdmi port version will never be released it was for promo purposes which is crappy of them. They probably saving it for an all new model which won't be out soon

Cold. Deals like this should be banned as no stock and long lead times. Also deals with no available stock should not be expired and relisted when it becomes available. Or may be a new separate section for stock coming soon deals.

This comes with games too

Need for speed shift (Download)
Need for speed hot pursuit (Download)
Deadspace (Download)
Battlefield 2: Bad company (Download)
FIFA 12 (Download)
Star Battalion (Pre installed)
FIFA 10 (Pre installed)
Tetris (Pre installed
Crash bandicoot (Pre installed)
The Sims 3 (Pre installed)
Bruce Lee dragon warriors (Pre installed)

Psp Go was sold off at £50 in the end and, in my opinion, a great bit of kit. Nice design and great build quality. £500 is just silly money for this phone as was the launch price of the psp go.
Simple economies at play here. Phones are updated more frequently than ever. If they dont shift a few of these they will bring out a newer model and then need a fire sale to shift them.
At this moment in time, this is a great price. Plus, it can be rooted, run emulators and they even got Onlive running on it.

Banned

HEAT! That's an amazing price, might grab one!

FAIL

It's Sony Ericsson - so?
It runs Gingerbread, but Sony Ericsson stated recently that these will get Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) at some stage (LINKY). Which to me makes it a great phone. I only see SE committing to this (I'm a OSF owner here and would love official Android updates!).
It's got a 5mp camera - big whoop, most people don't buy phones for the camera. Thought about using your phone for calling or texting? Or is there no-one in you address book which is why you're posting stupid things on here?

I know this tool's probably just saying this to get a reaction but I don't get it.

Couldn't agree more! Absolutely loved my K800i and it's still my favourite phone even today, could easily still use it had I not lost it As for that I had a W995 and Satio a few years back and didn't like either at all. Really wanted the Arc too because it's the best looking phone on the market I say but from my last 2 SE phones I decided to forget that.

Its always funny seeing people say one camera is better than the other because one has x amount of megapixels over the other.

Its about the software. Camera hardware means little to nothing in high end smartphones.

lol. know one can come close to apple. htc and samsung yes. apple no. there hardware is outdated and overpriced. This probably has better hardware than the iphone for gods sake.

I payed 250 for this a month or so ago, and that was a bargain as I absolutely love it, all of the nintendo emulators and PSOne game releases on it now, filling my 32G memory card along with the games from Android market place like Angry Birds, I also sometimes notice it rings and people want to talk to me on it too but this is a negative feature for me as it gets in the way of the gaming ;-).

There's Nintendo emulators as well? Why didn't I get the next day delivery option?

Had a SanFrancisco this seemed good value but was buggy & mediocre in performance the Sony E is well worth double +
Very reasonable price for a good spec phone

Funnily enough just had a go of my mates in the boozer , tried rainbow six vegas , very impressed .

For those who have both the San Fran and the Xperia Play, how big is it compared to the San Fran? Despite it being slow, I love the size of my San Fran. Decent size screen and not too big. Should I upgrade to this?

are all these included regardless of where you buy the phone? thanks

I think I'll get one of these come Bonus time, assuming there are more games out for it.

Anyone know how long the battery lasts while playing games?

8.5 hours expected in normal use...not sure about gaming. Thats about 3 more than my psp go had and almost triple the 3dS
