This is a great price - currently on Amazon for £246.98 amazon.co.uk/Sin…LB0.
An overlocker is a boon if you do a lot of sewing - finishes off seams professionally and can be used to make garments completely, apart from hemming.

Anyone have one if these and recommend it? Never used one before - is it ok for a beginner? Thanks

I haven't used this particular model. The main problem people have with overlockers is threading them. It can be a bit of a pain but the trick when changing threads is to tie old and new thread together with a reef knot (square knot) and pull the thread through - just need to cut it before threading the needles. Have a look on YouTube to see how they work, even if there's no video for this particular overlocker they're all pretty much the same.
Actually have just looked and there are videos for this machine: youtube.com/res…754

Just to add. I said you could make a complete garment with an overlocker apart from doing hems; you can't put zips in with them either; sorry. But if you were making something out of stretch fabric you don't need any fastenings.
Great thank you. Much appreciated
As a beginner, can I start off with this?
Can I overclock this overlocker?

If you don't know what an overlocker is you must have lead a sheltered life..

Although seeing the name Singer is also evocative of appalling sewing machines that weren't fit for purpose - which is why Bernina, Pfaff, Husqvarna etc took off, selling machines that worked, and kept on working without frequent visits to the repair shop.
That's not fair, this is a good machine though it's fiddly to thread. This comes just in time for fancy dress/cosplay making

I'm talking a while back, when Singer manufactured their own machines. It's just a badge now to stick on imports from China.
This is great, I was looking at buying one for £189.99, I hope they have stock and it's not limited.

Why cant it do hems or zips?
Is this a problem that this has that other sewing machines do not?

An overlocker does the type of seam you see on the inside of a t-shirt or joggers. It's designed to stitch two pieces of stretchable fabric together with a stretchable seam. This is not the sort of stitch you use to fit a zip or hem something - you need a normal sewing machine for that.
I suspect there are a number of people thinking this is a sewing machine - and unaware that an overlocker is rather different!

Pshh. Just change to copper needle. Lol

Why would I need to sew I live in a cave? Ah now I think I know why my loin cloth fell off.

Not a clue I'm afraid. I know nothing about the things - apart from stuff the wife taught me! And the bitter experience of owning a Singer 438.

It doesn't do a straight stitch; a straight stitch would be like this: ----------------------------------------- which is what you use to sew a zip in. If you look at the seams of your clothes you'll see the stitch an overlocker does. - Like this imgur.com/2vw…qRB

The community here I would imagine. They don't like that sort of thing.

Are you a beginner to sewing or just using an overlocker? If new to sewing a sewing machine would be best. They are easy to use, the main problem people have with overlockers is the threading as they use 4 lots of thread at one time. They usually come threaded though so the easy thing to do is tie old thread and new thread together then pull the threads through - of course you'll have to then cut where you've joined them to thread the needles; overlockers have 2 needles and 2 loopers. If you're not sure about whether it would be suitable for you have a look on YouTube.
Got one for my sister for Christmas, thank OP!

Thanks for your response, i'm completely new to sewing
Just happened to be in Lidl early this morning (8am), so the overlockers and knew my wife wanted one - quick eBay/Amazon search told me they'd be £100+ dearer everywhere else and the reviews were good. Christmas present sorted! Hot!
UPDATE: Went back 2hrs later, to maybe do a duplicate purchase... ALL GONE!
Yup. none in feltham
Thanks to OP. I got one from Glasgow Victoria Rd store a bit before 12pm today, there were still a lot left at that point.
I suspect if you didn't get one at 8am first thing then you won't get one now ....

None at Tamworth. Trying Market Harborough later but I doubt there'll be any left...
Around 15 in stock at 8 this morning. 4 or 5 went in the first 5 minutes after opening, and I'm guessing the rest have gone by now.

All it needed was one eBay reseller to walk in and clear the lot!
Good deal! I have this model, as purchased from Lidl the last time it was sold at this price and very pleased. I went to an overlocker workshop during the summer and everyone had a different model... I preferred mine, even in comparison with more expensive models. I find it easy to thread as it's all colour marked. If you're new to overlocking like I was, I suggest a workshop or book to pick-up the basics if you don't have much patience with instruction manuals!!!
