1.0l? you might need to push it up the hill

I'm assuming new engine technology has passed you by unnoticed?

With the engine downsizing trend in full swing, it’s no surprise to see the VW Group’s tried and tested 1.0-litre three-cylinder is now available in the Skoda Octavia. What might come as a surprise is that it’s actually a great choice, despite being such a small engine in such a big car.

The little three-cylinder under the bonnet produces 113bhp, which isn’t much in a car like the Octavia. But the 200Nm of torque is very impressive for a 1.0-litre unit and actually makes the engine very useable in normal driving.

Key specs
Model: Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI SE
Engine: 1.0-litre 3cyl petrol
Power: 113bhp
Torque: 200Nm
Transmission: Seven-speed auto, front-wheel drive
0-62mph: 9.9 seconds
Top speed: 126mph
Economy: 62.8mpg
CO2: 104g/kmOn sale: Now

Have a look at the Bhp and the 0-60 time. They will tell you more than the cubic capacity of the engine.

I really don't know how they do a deal that is less than the depreciation of the vehicle
It's amazing what they can get out of these modern small engines.
Slightly suspicious that they could have done this 30 years ago though.
Am I blind or is the mileage not shown?

Technology, build and fabrication processes, materials... All were not at the level they are now...
A turbo 30 years ago had no where near the level of refinement and reliability they have today.

Or, in real world driving conditions, probably 35mpg v 33mpg.

That 1.4 in my yeti is pretty thirsty. It's a great engine though.

Nope - those were real mpg figures...

If you check figures for same engine in estate Octavia or other models in VAG group, they are all achieving around 47mpg.... This leads me to suspect people have inadvertently put in wrong figures on HonestJohn.

An Octavia estate weighs more.

Same engine in smaller cars such as Fabia or Polo etc is around mid/high 40s.
And estate is 1172kg cf 1150kg for hatchback (Octavia brochure) 22kg can not make 20mpg difference!

Same engine block, but with different power outputs. This Octavia has 115ps, the Fabia/Polo has 95ps.

What car seems to support your reasoning:

This is what I was expecting, around 45mpg for this Octavia.
However, on HonestJohn realmpg page it shows rather high, 60+.
The same engine in various modes of tune and in different models throughout VAG group of cars, people are achieving mid 40s.
Anyways. Ordering this car as current car does 26mpg.
