Lets see how this goes down...

The standard Rapid 1.2 SE (5 speed, 86bhp) is £15630, but there's now a special edition SE Connect that adds 16" alloys, rear parking sensors, DAB, metallic paint and a Sat Nav.

This is then cheaper than the standard car at £12990, which to my mind makes it a bargain.

No, the Rapid isn't the last word in quality and refinement, nor is it a hot hatch, or something that will impress the "ladies" outside your nearest takeaway, but it is a brand new, decent sized family car with plenty of room and a pretty good spec for a similar price to a lot of superminis.

Let the automotive experts commence arguing......

Not a bad looking car IMO.

The Rapid has always been a wierd car to me... Never really knew where it fitted in.

- UP = Citigo
- Polo = Fabia
- Golf = Octavia
- Passat = Superb

Got to say though that the new Rapid spaceback looks a great car (although interior looks a lot to be desired). If this is included in their 0% PCP offer and the free servicing package, its a top deal.

ITs the culmination of parts of emerging market vehicles sold by the VW Group, often made in 3 party factories its called the VW Santana, South American Seat Toledos, Chinese Jetta (Night).

Its offered as a variation as a cheap car to the EU market due to price increases at Seat and rising prices of existing Skoda models.

It never looked good value, this makes a bit better.

There's a few Skodas that don't map exactly to the conventional market segments - something that works in favour and against them at times.
The Mk3 Octavia is now significantly bigger than the Golf, while being a good bit cheaper too, for example.
The Rapid hatch is another slightly odd one - not quite as long as the Octy, but with a similar shape and cheaper interior. The list prices were a bit on the optimistic side, but this is far better value for money.

The Rapid Spaceback looks better than the standard hatch and is probably an easier car to sell, despite having a bit less room.

Roughly I think skoda are trying to appeal to the VW likers market on the basis of being cheaper and competing for buyers that would have to pick a car 1 or 2 tiers lower in order to buy a VW aka if they wanted a VW Passat they would have to settle for a Polo/Golf to get VW but could get the Octavia for similar money.

I actually quite like the Rapid looks wise but the 1.2 engine and only a 5 speed are putting me off as I just get the feeling it will be rather high revving at motorway speeds.

Nice inoffensive looking car, but why in the photo above is it kerb crawling for silver haired gigolos?

I've not driven one myself so can't help there, but if you wander over to Briskoda.net I'm sure someone will let know know.

I did say it won't impress the ladies. Maybe it does the trick for him....

It could be the feature line down the side, that's my favourite bit. Too many cars nowadays have windows and shut lines that look just plain strange.

Looks good in Spaceback form too. Cars with black roofs look so much better.

Toledo with the same engine will be cheaper.

It's a pretty close run thing. The Toledo 1.2 SE is £16350 list. That has a roughly equivalent spec to this version of the Rapid but does have the 105bhp version of the 1.2TSI engine.
Seat are doing a £2500 discount at the mo, so you'll be paying £850 more for the extra 19bhp which you may or may not think is worthwhile.

I might be wrong but

Jetta = Rapid???

Both the Seat and Skoda are made in the same factory.

As I posted previously Rapid = Jetta Knight

Jetta Knight is a 4dr Polo.

It wont win any traffic light grand prix, but the TSi have 50% more torque than the 1.2 MPi, so it shouldn't be as bad as you think.
